How bad is this Defense?

I dunno if it's coverage or pass rush, but it needs to get fixed. He just had too much time to throw the ball.

Mostly pass coverage.

Today the pass rush couldn't get there. That's why I wasn't upset with Carter on the 1st TD. The rush didn't get there and it was a perfect throw.

But, the big problem is that the pass coverage gives up way too many easy passes. We'll give up those 5-10 yard passes with nobody close to the receiver. It allows the opposing QB to get into rhythm and at the very least, guarantees the opposing offense 1 first down. And we are still struggling to make interceptions. We get some opportunities, but for some reason or another, guys can't make plays. Lots of mis-timed jumps, drops, not looking back at the ball when they are in position to, etc.

Stat wise and real life wise probably 20th at best in the league. Probably a little lower. Saints are a top 3 d lol

Lol we spent 50 million and traded up for man coverage.

I don't think Carr or even Scandrick are the problem. Carr mis-timed one jump where he could have had an INT. Claiborne is awful and is reaching the point where 'bust' may be a viable term for him. But, I think we have bigger problems with Carter and Durant/Sims. I had no problem with the 1st TD Carter gave up, but the rest of the day Woodland and Gates gave him problems. Durant must be real bad in coverage as Sims has never been known as a great cover guy. And we replaced Durant with Sims today. Only the Cowboys could get killed in pass coverage because their SAM backer is the weak freaking link.

Antonio Gates destroyed Sean Lee all day long. On the pick 6 Lee had, Gates had blown by him and had at least 3 steps on him. Luckily, Hatch got to Rivers in time to force the lame duck throw. LB play has been a liability on pass defense this year and Lee is at the center of it.

When you have man corners you play man coverage not zone that is a huge problem right now. Also when you can't convert 3rd downs and put your defense on the field over and over again they wear out and when they can't get the other team off the field in 3rd situations your defense looks terrible. Just look at the 3rd down conversion rate and you can see why things were so bad for the defense.

They've been horrible quite frankly. I don't know if it's because they're paying too much attention to the run or what (they did that in the Giant game) but something has to change.

I didn't see a problem with Lee today. The Gates TD was 1 bad play. I'd really like to see the All-22 and see what it says. But Carter was a real problem. It appeared that he and Sims/Durant kept botching their assignments, particularly on whatever RB for the Chargers was coming out of the backfield. Somebody like Gates is more likely a safety assignment, so I question how well Church and Wilcox did out there. But, I'm pretty confident that Lee wasn't an issue. Neither was Carr.

And to follow up on my point I think it was moose or goose who even said we have got to get out of the zone it was killing is and we didn't in fact I think we made it worse rushing only 3 guys we got no pressure and allowed the chargers to split our zones and find every open hole. If the announcers notice it why can't the coaches

If you get out of zone you're playing man. Chargers were having a track meet with Dallas LBers today. Lee saw Gates' *** cheeks all day long today.

I didn't see sims botch any assignments it's was Carter and Durant and that's why Sims was in. In fact Sims was put in because Durant was getting abused. I don't think Church blew any assignments on the RB. Not sure it would be his job to even remotely think about guarding the sideline in the zone when WR and TE's are working the middle of the field so whose job was it to cover the RB out of the back field? Obviously Carter on both those plays. Lee just got a bad matchup on that gates TD and we were late with pressure. Listen the zone has been a problem all pre season. It's been open because the LB were not getting depth mostly Lee but I did notice that Wilcox was playing way deep a lot! That's a problem completely taking a guy out of a play is poor play design period. We need to play man period and use our strength there. Once they do that Mo will look better as will Carr and Scandrick these guys are great man corners

We did a poor job of getting our hands on them at the release if you play man you get your hands on then instead of allowing them to run free into the zone. Playing man would've forced us to play aggressive on the line and bump the WR instead we left the zones open all day. Listen Moose and Goose basically said the same thing

Obviously the coaches think we are better in Zone....

In reality I don't trust Carr or MO vs a quick or speedy WR

They do it to create more turnovers.

It's a lot easier to get the ball when you're looking forward instead of chasing your man.

We actually do have the corners to play man. Thats not the problem though.

All you can ask from a defense in todays NFL is to slow down the other teams offense and create turnovers. The first half we did that. The 2nd half we didnt.

The rules are so rediculously lopsided that we're not ever going to shut teams out with any kind of consistency.

Carr and MO...mostly MO play like they are trying to run through quicksand

It's not working, especially with our Corners. They can't jump a route to save their lives.

We need to mix it up and play a bit more man, I know we want int's and turnovers...but forcing an incompletion or 3 and out works just as good sometimes

These are all franchise worsts after four games:
(Old franchise worst in parentheses)

Passing TD Allowed 10
(9 in 1960)

Passing Yards Allowed 1218
(1025 in 2009)

Completion Percentage Allowed 66.3%

Hate what this says, but appreciate that you took the time to provide the info, percy. Man, I'm tired of the passing defensive woes.

defense gave us 6 turnovers in ny, with two of those resulting in scores. Held the chiefs to 17 points. held the rams to 7, but they're the problem now? They're the stinkers? They had a sorry game today, but when do we expect our offense with our 100 million dollar qb, hall of fame tight end, and one of the best young receivers in the game to step up? putting up 2 touch downs or less isn't going to get it done.

It's a real disappointment, and it's about to get worse if somebody doesn't come up with something quick.

So their problems are thus:

1) Can't stop the pass.
2) Can't score consistently even though they pass relatively efficiently.

Stop me if you've heard that before....
