It hurts because our deep speed has gone out the window.

And it will really hurt if Owen misses time.

Could turn out to be a very disappointing season.

Glenn Out For Season In Dallas?

September 7, 2007 5:10 AM

For at least three minutes Thursday, the Cowboys' team Web site "broke the story" that starting wide receiver Terry Glenn would miss the season after reinjuring his right knee.

A few moments later, that version of the story mysteriously vanished, and was replaced with the much more soothing headline, "Step Back: Knee injury could sideline Glenn for at least two weeks."

The fact that owner/general manager Jerry Jones was the main source for both reports may have confused a couple of readers. Did Glenn make a miraculous recovery or did Jones decide he wanted to keep the Giants in the dark for a couple more days?

In the interest of clarity, Hashmarks has learned that the original version may have been more accurate. Late Thursday night, a member of the organization told me Glenn was indeed finished for the season, but that the Cowboys decided (a little too late) to hold off on making the announcement.

Glenn's agent, Jimmy Gould, told the Dallas Morning News that no decision had been made regarding his client's status. Glenn missed all four preseason games after having a cyst removed from his right knee Aug. 1. He made it through his first full practice Wednesday, but then experienced swelling.

Glenn has only made it through a complete season three times during his 11-year career, but two of those seasons were with the Cowboys (2003 and 2005).

With Glenn out, Patrick Crayton becomes the second receiver. Crayton probably has the best hands on the team, but he lacks Glenn's speed and quickness. Sam Hurd and Miles Austin are next in line, but I'm sure scouting chief Jeff Ireland and his staff will be on the lookout for a veteran.

Stay with us throughout the day for more details.

no, stanback is big. Glenn is small and explosive, he is hard to cover because he runs his routes so well and is so explosive in and out of his breaks.

No one on this roster has the skillset that he has. All our guys are bigger and are not the quality of glenn, obviously.

stanback can run obviously and so can austin but they cant run routes yet at their top speed like glenn can, he was going full tilt all the time because of his excellent route running.

Exactly. That's why this hurts so much. If we lost Crayton and Hurd had to fill in, okay. Both are similar type bigger, physical receivers. But we don't have anyone else with quicks who can get separation, and those are the guys who are so dangerous when left in single coverage. Austin is the only guy even close to having the same skillset, and he's too raw right now.

And of course that's not even accounting for the fact that Terry has great hands and is just one heck of a player overall.

I hate to talk draft three days before our first ballgame, but I sure hope we draft an explosive, quick type WR next year. Everyone loves big WRs, but the Santana Mosses, Steve Smiths, and Terry Glenns are awfully scary for defenses.

Ugh. In the meantime, this is Crayton's big chance. A lot of teams will probably roll everything to T.O. and challenge Crayton to beat the corner. Maybe he can more than they think. But he still won't be able to make them pay.

And one more sucky thing... If Newman weren't hurt, this would be the perfect time to sneak him in at WR every once in a while to at least keep defenses honest. Not now with the foot.

I want to see Dallas go after Chris Chambers, he's a nice deep threat and has some pretty good hands...

He has put up some respectable numbers when he's had to sub for Glenn...but again, he's no Terry Glenn.

Yeah I have heard Everson walls and rod woodson say a couple of times that big wr are easy to cover because they are not as quick but the small fast explosive guys are hard to keep track of and hard to run with.

West coast offenses always have those big guys and they use them well.

But if you want to line a guy up wide and have him beat a press with safety help you have to have a really skilled, confident and quick wr.

outside of glenn we dont have that. I am sure different plays will be called and just like in 04 when witten became the number 2 option I am sure he will again.

We can still win without him, but we are going to have to run the ball very effectively and especially move the chains in short yardage situations.

Romo was already a marked target this year, pretty much the whole league outside of cowboys fans hate him, I am sure other teams are sick of hearing about him and seeing him on tv. Now teams are going to have an advantage and they are going to be after him all day.

I am worried about the ability to hit the quarterback of the giants, dolphins and bears. We need sundays game big time, because an 0-3 start is going to be tough to dig out of especially when I am pretty confident the Commanders are going to start off fast maybe 5-1

Looking for receivers
If Terry Glenn is out for a significant portion of the season, do the Cowboys look to make a trade for a receiver or see what's available on the street?

Trades are tricky because teams generally don't like to give up draft picks. But for a team that expects to win now, as the Cowboys have stated, then they might have to give up some of the '07 picks. Not either of their two first-round picks, certainly, but it might have to be a first-day selection to get anybody good.

I saw some reports earlier in camp that Miami's Chris Chambers might be available, but I don't see that happening. The Patriots have a plethora of receivers on their roster and the Joneses certainly get along with the Krafts. Maybe there's something there.

If you're looking on the street, you've got guys like Reche Caldwell, who played for New England last year and helped beat Wade Phillips in the playoffs, Az Hakim and former Cowboys Quincy Morgan and Antonio Bryant. Whomever signs Bryant, however, has to have sit out a game because of an NFL suspension. Here's a name: Keenan McCardell. He's the ultimate professional. He can pick up a system quickly.

I personally thought the jags trying to move or possbily cutting reggie williams a few weeks ago was very intriguing, but he is another big wr...

We don't need to go get another WR from another team. We've got some quality back-ups who finally get a chance to step up.
Is Glenn's career in Dallas over? It may well be time to step down and retire.

How many passes does he get per game? Romo has always been good at spreading the ball around so it's not such a problem..

Bobby Carpenter for Matt Jones. :p:

I'm kidding. I don't want us to trade for anyone unless it only costs a very low pick. I think we should just bite the bullet for at least a couple of games.
