How did Cooper Rush fall through the cracks?

I mean he's been in the league since 2017. He went undrafted. Has been cut several times. Cut this year and cleared waivers. Yet, here he is at almost 29 years old balling out with the Cowboys. To the point that people are suggesting he become the starter. I mean, this doesn't even happen unless you are Kurt Warner. I am by no means suggesting that he is good as Kurt but he's playing at a decently high level. How did this happen?

He doesn’t have the arm strength you want but he is able to understand the offense as good as the coaches and execute it fairly well if not asked to do to much. He can win games with a defense holding teams below 20 points week after week but let the defense give up 30+ and he will likely struggle to keep up.

Unfortunately he doesn't have the arm talent of Warner or the confidence/savvy of Brady. The comparisons are pretty silly. If Dak can come back and put up 30/game again, there's no reason to continue talking about a QB controversy. If he comes back and puts up 15/game, we have a decision to make.

Bingo! This is the same Rush that looked horrible in the first exhibition game this year. This is the same Rush that was playing for his football life in a roster spot battle with Grier. Now some of you claim he's this great QB. I'll continue to say he's a decent BACKUP QB that's helping this team win games. The real hero is our DEFENSE....not Rush.

He gets the ball out quickly.
He never puts defenses in a bad position. (so far)
He scores early and answers the oppositions attempts at momentum changes.


He helps the OL(by getting he ball out quickly) and the defense by keeping the game of field position in our favor.
He understnands the design of plays and immediately gets the ball to the player schemed to be open if he is in fact open.

He avoids major mistakes.( so far)

With this team he is capable, and nothing flash about him during preseason. As a matter of fact I believe he suck. Coop is a quality back up, possible starter on some teams. But of your team isnt built up he will struggle. I wonder how Coop wouldve play against Tampa with that leaky oline.

I keep reading the comparisons but the one comparison I think everyone is missing is roger staubach. Cooper Rush is the greatest qb to take the field as a Dallas cowboy since ol #12 hung em up!

No one missed anything. One of the things tested for at the combine is velocity… his was a paltry 45 MPH. That limits him to only being able to make about half the passes necessary for a starter at this level. Hes held on because he a cerebral knowledge of the offense. So far they’ve been able to limit his throws to what he’s good at, in part because of the defense limiting other teams and we haven’t exactly played offensive juggernauts. Eventually there’s going to be enough tape on him, the opposing teams can game plan to take away the passes he’s capable of making!

It took Rush years to get to wear he now…..which is a solid backup QB
The whole league even passed on him when he was waived this year,
though Dallas did plan to keep him, they weren't too worried.

It happened in part because there is not enough footage on Rush. It takes the NFL about four or five games to catch up. With Rush I'd say the NFL will have him figured out after the Rams game. That's why I kind of hope he isn't our starter against Philly.

I’m not sure Rush ever had to clear waivers as a veteran.

I shudder when I think that on offseason move was cutting Rush and then later re-signing him. Think maybe Pittsburgh could use his services right about now?

That's not it. If all Dak does is putting up 20 points more on the boards in games any backup QB could win, then we don't need him.

What we do need him for is winning us those games against contenders, in which our defense can't hold the opponent down to a low score. Or in which our offense has to overcome a very good defense themselves. So far he hasn't been able to do that for over a year.

For all I care we can beat teams like Washington or the Bears 10-7, as long as we also score at least a point more against Tampa, LAR or KC. And that's the standard I'd always hold my starter up to.

And that would be because you cannot compare Cooper Rush to Roger Staubach.

Roger Staubach is an NFL god who won super bowls and is in the Hall of Fame.

Dak Prescott has done nothing in comparison That's why he can be compared with Cooper Rush.

Roger Staubach is at a whole different level with the most elite to have ever played this game.

Cooper doesn't have the measurables to be a big time QB, but unlike most backups he's been in the same system for 5 years. He knows the system and the other players in it. He's playing opposite a good defense.

As a QB, he's got what it takes to learn the system and has been given ample time to do so.

Cooper is yet another demonstration by the Cowboys that good QBs can be had downroster if given a chance. Romo, Moore, Dak, Rush. All for 1 4th round pick.

One of my wishes was for McCarthy to really focus on developing QBs, and only consider paying one *after* the team makes it over the hump. Imagine Rush as QB with 40million more spent on the defense and offense.
