So basically Wilcox didn't think it was his assignment and he let the TE get behind him. I guess he was spying on the QB and defending the flat? Call me stupid but basic football dictates FS as the last line of defense and therefore Wilcox made a poor executive decision by allowing a TE, especially one of Davis caliber to get behind him. Duh

Zone schemes throw common sense out the window and often times they are taken way too literal. If u see a WR or a TE running past your stupid little zone and nobody else is there to pick him up, stick with him!!! C'mon man

I don't know if anyone has noticed but we suck at zone coverage. That's how Davis got wide open.

They can send who every to spy but agree with your post. The reason why this team sucks at zone is due to the fact they don't study film, they have zero concept of route recognition. Think about Patton ints during preseason, he is a zone man player, he understand routes. Playing man is more physical and is a tool set, very easy to do. My understanding of zone is simple, like you I'm no football head but once someone steps into your zone you man up on them or keep yourself with in arm length.

So wait, you mean to tell me the safety that was playing D2 level rb / wr just 2 years years ago is making dumb mental mistakes??

No idea why this board fell in love with the hype of Wilcox so quickly. As of right now he is a great athlete trying to play defense. I've yet to see him do it successfully. Yes, he's young blah blah blah....His current learning on the job is hurting the team.

Vernon Davis got so wide open, because of talent on his behalf, and lack of talent on Dallas end

To me, the vast majority of the problems that Dallas had against SF just stem from an overall lack of attention to detail.

Attention to detail has been lacking since day one when Garrett started coaching. Its carried over to the entire team now.

I am of the personal opinion that Vernon Davis is the most physically gifted TE in the NFL.

This team has done this malfunction for how many years now?

Sometimes its the culture.

I would say it's stupid players. And why are we working out receivers when we let a couple good ones go when we obviously need CBs.

It's easy to throw Wilcox under the bus and he needs to be held accountable but lets remember he is still learning the position.

Wilcox lost his starting job to Heath last year. I'm not saying Heath is better but pointing out how some people here grossly underrate Heath and overrate Wilcox.

Perhaps but is it really that complicated?

He played deep middle, deep half, cover 3 under and nickel. All of his issues were from playing up on the line. He took bad angles repeatedly. Heath had the same issue in the preseason when asked to do the same thing. When Scandrick comes back hopefully this week, we will improve.

Moore gave up a lot of completions too. Seems like everyone wants to focus on the couple Carr and Claiborne each gave up

It's also Wilcox's 6th NFL start. 14th game played. It stands to reason he will improve mentally with reps. He doesn't look physically overmatched nearly so much as seeing new things.

Laying down some truth right there.

I just don't understand why this team is so adamant on running zone defenses......maybe its just me and I have nothing to back this up with but it seems like this team has far more success in man and why wouldn't you go man against a team who doesn't really have much speed at the receiver spot? Their fastest players are their quarterback and tight end.

I think one of the under-analyzed aspects of the pre-season was how much time Carr missed for the death of a family member. It's a highly sensitive topic obviously.

Here is the question worth asking -- If Carr was a 2nd year UDFA without a huge contract would he have been away from camp for so long? It seemed like the amount of time he was away was extra-ordinary. I'm sure they did him a favor and gave him the time/space he requested, however, at the end of the day it's all about wins and losses.

I know that's harsh -- however, I believe Carr missed <most> of the preseason.

Hard to say but it looked like Carr was supposed to be in that zone and he left it.

I guess that's what happens when you take the entire summer off and think you can just show up week 1 and play at the highest level.

I think its a slippery slope when telling someone how they should cope with the loss of their mother. That's not something you just get over.
