Last year, I felt hopeful at wide receiver. This year, I feel more confident in our group overall. Last year, we were hoping Houston would latch on, that Fehoko would take a step, that Gallup would return fully healed. This year, I feel like Cooks is on the same level as Amari Cooper, that Lamb will be even better than last, that Gallup should be back to full-form, and that Tolbert is finally ready to produce to the level I envisioned when we drafted him.

I feel more confident at running back with Pollard being our number 1 guy. And I have more confidence in Vaughn than the "let's wait and see" crowd. I liked Luepke coming out of UDFA, and Rico Dowdle surprisingly took a spot, which is exciting.

Our secondary is stronger, which I didn't think would be easy given how well Anthony Brown played for us in Dallas.

My only question marks are at TE, which I suspect will be good. But I want to see Schoonmaker prove us right in the draft, and offensive line depth.

I like our starting five. And guys like T.J. Bass give me hope. But there are still some question marks there.

Overall, I think we're in much better shape this year, if we can stay healthy.

I like the roster fills. The team is strong on the passing game on both sides of the ball. Just get done what is expected of you. Injuries come and go...I don't want to watch a lot of pulls and swollen ankles. Get taped, stretch, and get the ice where needed.

My biggest concern is no injuries to game ready offensive linemen. That will be a team detriment and a kick in the gut for this fan. That or first two picks in next year's draft an offensive tackle and center.

This better be the strongest show come game time:

1. Edge rushers

  • Micah Parsons
  • DeMarcus Lawrence
  • Sam Williams
  • Dorance Armstrong
  • Dante Fowler Jr.
  • Viliami Fehoko Jr.

I thought trading Amari for a 5th was a terrible idea and I think that was born out.
This year I think selecting Mazi instead of a guard/tackle was a mistake.

I think Mazi is going to be good in the long run, but this year he is going to struggle it's just a matter of how much.

I also wanted to say I thought taking Mazi was the right move at the time, because DT has been a need forever for this team; but now, I just think we could have gotten by with what we had. The kid they were thinking of taking over Mazi (Bergeron) is going to start for Atlanta.

Our depth at Oline is really hurt by the poor play of Ball and Waletzko, I know some people think Ball performed OK at guard, but I thought he was terrible at tackle when he played, now he is injured and not playing until later in the season I just think he is a waste of a roster spot. Waletzko can go too, always hurt, gets pushed around at guard and tackle, I don't think he is good enough to keep on the roster. As bad as Farniok played at guard he is at least serviceable at center, seeing him go also hurt the depth if for no other reason he was a serviceable if below average center/guard. The Cowboys Oline is not deep at all and while I have hope for Richards and Bass; I think that throwing them in early could hinder the team as a whole, but I think eventually they will be OK, I just wonder how long it is going to take. Last year though we didn't know what the Cowboys had in Tyler Smith and I think most of us were pleasantly surprised. Hopefully the rookies are able to handle the upcoming season, hopefully later than sooner.

The WR room is a whole lot better than last year, our second and third wide receivers were Dennis Houston and rookie Jalen Tolbert, Gallup was hurt and Washington (talk about a disappointing signing) also was injured. This year we have Cooks and Jalen looks to have taken a step, which was needed, Gallup is over a year removed from his ACL. So much better. Noah Brown is on the Texans popping balls into the air causing ints.

I liked our RB room better last year, but not by that much. Elliott was no longer explosive like early in his career, but he was tough and I loved that. I don't think this team has a downhill runner like him, but the Cowboys probably have better pieces. Deuce will be exciting and I think they have a role in mind for Luepke. Dowdle needs to stay healthy, he might be a diamond, but if he can't stay on the field he will be gone. Pollard should be about what he was last year, I think the Cowboys will be OK at RB with Tony.

TE maybe a little more exciting. Ferguson is ready, Schoon is a tough blocking machine and Hendershot, well is Hendershot, I'm not that impressed with him I'll be honest, he needs to be able to catch the ball better and block better, I thought Stephens offered more, but since Stephens is hurt I don't mind Hendershot on the roster that much, McKeon is on the PS and if necessary he can have a role later in the year depending on injuries.

I have anxiety over LB's this year, Vander Esch is an injury waiting to happen, Clark (hurt most of last year) looked lost last year and the only other LB on this roster is Harper (played three games last year). I like Clark and Harper don't get me wrong, but I would have liked to get more depth. I understand why they didn't though because those three will be rotating between Middle and Weak side while Kearse Bell and Wilson will be probably playing strong side, dipping into the safety depth, the Cowboys will be going long on safety this year where they are very deep.

I like the secondary, much better than last year, but there is not too much depth behind Gilmore and Trevon. I like Bland, but he did make some mistakes in Pre-season on the outside this year, beyond him not convinced about Noah Igbinoghene or Wright. If Eric Scott is playing multiple minutes at CB then something went really wrong in the secondary. My criticisms are a little nitpicky because it was obvious that Anthony just wasn't very good anymore, he really wasn't ever that good to begin with, I liked his fight, but this team needed to move away from him. I'm not happy he go injured, but the Cowboys needed to move on.

On the DL, I wonder if they still have the juice that they had last year, will they be able to play with the same intensity as they did at the beginning of the season last year? Will they be able to dominate games like they did at points last year? How much does Lawrence, Fowler and Armstrong have left? Can Golston and Osa take the next step, can Sam stop being a knucklehead and play to his talent level? So many question for the DL this year. If they can play like last year than I think the Cowboys at the very least win the division.

I would like to see Lance play some if possible. I thought Rush played fantastic when called upon, it's just about all you can ask for from your back-up QB. Dak, Dak, DAK, STOP throwing over the middle on 3rd and long PLEASE!

Wow, kudos for the in-depth answer. I know today's Twitter culture will complain, but I thought it was a good analysis of where the roster is at.

Haha! I hurt my knee at work a week ago and I have been so bored, I can't move too much so I've been getting into Cowboys news and catching up on everything going on this off season, it has been interesting to say the least.

Answer this question. “ with the exception of the Mazi acquisition, how exactly have we gotten better than the Niners in the trenches on BOTH sides of the ball”?

Yes, the addition of Gilmore ,Cooks and Deuce at the skill positions will be a factor but have the lines been shore up adequately?

Take the homer caps off and explain because they have dominated it for years

Not really. The 49ers offensive line wasn't effective against Dallas last year.

I am worried about the depth at OL again. We already have two starters dinged to some degree. If both miss this week, we are screwed. Even worse, if Biadasz misses time we are really screwed.

I said a few weeks back they could deal with an injury on the OL but if two or more go down it will be a tough hill to climb considering the strength of the DTs in the NFC east. If they lost Biadasz and Hoffman has to play it will get really ugly really fast.

I am comfortable with the defense barring an injury to Hankins.

We have to see Dak play too. He cannot repeat the INTs he threw last year. They have to come down. Not only do they give away points but they change the momentum of the game in a big way.

Finally, I am concerned this "Sieze Everything" thing is going to blow up in their faces if they lose early in the season.

DT: Better with Hankins having a full off-season with the team. Mazi already better than Gallimore...

RB: Better. Addition by subtraction by cutting Zeke. Vaughn will be a significant contributor. Dowdle power runner but must secure the ball.

TE: Schultz was over-rated. Kellen Moore schemed him open. All 3 young guys have NFL talent and all are better blockers than Schultz.

LB: Clark has to prove it, but he looked like a star player in the preseason. True sideline to sideline LB.

CB: Better.

OL: Great if healthy, but... For 2024 I'm confident in Bass and Asim Richards, but not certain about near term. Chuma Edoga is decent at LG if healthy and can manage at RT.

QB (backup): Trey Lance might not become a quality starter, but I'm convinced he can surpass the ability of Cooper Rush as a backup. He might be there already in the right offensive scheme.

Safety: Same or slightly better if all are healthy.

WR: Better. Cooks is both the player and personality that they've needed at WR. Competitive.
- Noah Brown didn't have #2 WR ability and previouly Cooper didn't really care if they won or lost the games.

DE: The 2nd half of 2022 they had to over-focus on stopping the run. Now the big DTs will allow the DEs to just play the run on the way to the QB.

My biggest head scratcher was RB after TP, but I've really grown to like the combination of guys we have. It helped ease my mind we kept Luepke and plant to utilize him like MM did with Kuhn in GB.

Good view. Using your view, I just don't want this group to fall prey to lazy play any time in the season...close the deal this first game, and don't look back to turn to stone.

Head to head, this team can play against San Francisco...both teams have to wear pads, helmets, and shoes. Just show up game day, Cowboys...you'll be fine.

100% wrong on Amari Cooper, $22 million for a backup wr2 was far too much to take that cap hit the problem was they didn't realize that Michael gallup wasn't going to come back full they didn't realize that Tony tolbert wasn't gonna develop.. They lost jarwin, Cooper, Collins, Connor Williams ,Cedric Wilson, and Turner.. Then we started a rookie left tackle and then end up having a rotation all along the offensive line when we had injuries to cover up that was the problem last year,

not amari Cooper but if they cut anybody that was a mistake knowing they needed depth it was Cedric Wilson..Ced would have helped to keep Noah to 3 until gallup came back, Noah's a 4..
You cannot afford to keep an amari Cooper for $22 million he was a cap casualty just like Hopkins, dalvin cook, and we end up getting Gilmore and Brandon cooks for similar deals. This is what the NFL is that fifth round now that you look back at it wasn't that big a deal it is what teens are going to do they're gonna make you either take a low round draft pick or wait till you cut the guy, we would have got nothing for him.FACT

seriously, i'm absolutely sick and tired of hearing about Amari cooper, what exactly did he do for the Raiders and the Cowboys in the playoffs we made it to the second round of the playoffs without him we lost the San Francisco with and without him.... The guys are good player but he's no Jerry Rice and we could not afford to keep him with CD lamb and all these other contracts we had coming up have you noticed all these new deals...sorry AC long gone was the reason for the loss in the playoffs, was the OL and run game etc

Really, I take gholston kicked out to the outside over Fehoko.

In the line group...interchange and flex will always be available. You going to special skill opportunities or flex skills?
