How do you build around 3 players making up 50% of Cap?

Thats completely false.

Brian Burns just went for 3 picks including a 2nd rounder just this offseason after he had been franchised tagged and signed a massive extension. This also happened right before the draft when picks are at their highest value.

Other recent NFL trades...

Chase Young a 3rd rounder
Sweat went for a 2nd rounder
Leonard Williams went for a 2nd and 5th rounder
Aaron Rodgers netted two 2nd rounders
Darren Waller a 3rd rounder
Sean Payton a 1st rounder
Calvin Ridley a 3rd and 5th
Chase Claypool a 2nd rounder
TJ Hockenson a 2nd rounder
Roquan Smith a 2nd rounder + 5th rounder + a player
Kadarius Toney a 3rd and 6th rounder
Christian McCaffrey a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounder
Deshaun Watson (3) 1st round picks + 3rd round, (2) 4th rounders
Devante Adams a 1st and 2nd rounder
Russell Wilson 3 players, 2 1sts and 2 2nd rounders
Khalil Mack a 2nd and 5th

Yet you believe that the best pass rusher in football who still has multiple years on control would only get you a 2nd rounder? The market is always fluctuating, but there is zero chance 2nd round draft picks got that valuable overnight.
Two years, but the 2nd year is very expensive. There will be no first round draft choice traded for Micah Parsons. The Panthers parted with a great player, no first in the deal, but both teams are desperate for something. Every team is not as dumb as the Giants, and obviously they aren’t going to be that dumb again. Carolina could have paid Burns and chose not to. Perhaps the Cowboys will part with Parsons and will if they’re trying to emulate the Carolina Panthers. Those draft pick hauls will continue to get smaller and more rare as time goes on. All 32 teams have their first in 2025 and Micah Parsons is eligible to be extended, he’s not and he’s still with the Cowboys. What is Jerry planning to do? Are there any star players Jerry would like to sign? One is leaving in a little over 200 days, one won’t even show up to training camp, and one, who typically talks too much is not talking much at all. Does Jerry have a plan?

8 of the 11 Eagles starting offensive players are top 10 top (several top 5) paid at their positions…yet Jerry has somehow convinced his fans it’s impossible to sign 3 guys. I can’t decide if it’s more impressive for Jerry, or just sad how many people believe him.
And they stopped being a super bowl contender when they started paying people huge.

The argument is not about paying players top dollar, the argument is how many players can you pay at the top of the market and compete for a super bowl.

If he was traded for just a first, the outrage in here would be almost uncontrol able and the Cowboys would be the butt end of jokes no only in the league but across the country.
That’s not an issue because no team is parting with a first for Micah Parsons. Teams that think one of their stars will be about done before they can reasonably expect to contend for a Super Bowl will unload the star for draft picks rather than pay him. Is that where the Cowboys are now? Tough part is that becomes more unlikely every year as the amount left to spend after paying your best three or four players becomes less and less. Good teams can’t afford another star, bad teams can’t afford to part with draft picks.

It seems like the answer is that you can’t. At this point the only teams winning Super Bowls either have GOAT status QBs (Mahomes & Brady) or they just happen to have teams that peak at the exact right time for one season before they fall back to mediocrity (Rams). Even the 49ers who get put up on a pedestal for their front office moves have nothing to show for it and their window could be closing.

They’re a contender. When they don’t get to the Super Bowl, and they won’t, at least their fans don’t have to feel that it was for lack of trying. The 49ers, Lions, Packers are all starting to separate themselves from the other 13 teams in the conference. Rams, maybe some noise. Eagles, Cowboys, Falcons will win games they shouldn’t, but lose even more they should win.

Top 10 is different than the highest paid. Pretty big gap.

No they're not. Their D got them to a super bowl, and that D was dismantled.

And Mahomes not only signed a long term contract so they could push money down the road to remain in contention, he renegotiated even more of it down the road. Now there's a real man.

Take a look a the teams with non-Brady and non-Mahomes since 2001.

You can analytics this into..."well...it only high paid studs at QB win the super bowl...we can counter-culture that by going cheap on QB and providing depth around a rookie contract QB"

Maybe if you are a strict running the ball team with great oline schemes, rb play, offensive game plane scheming.

Relying on a rookie contract is short term...you have to pay him at some point.

This post X 1000. WE ARE THE SUCKERS!!!!!!!

He's getting everything he wants out of this "situation". Including making the players look bad, greedy, entitled, spoiled or any other adjective I seen being thrown around on this forum. And then he wants them to go out in and show fight, chemistry, pride for wearing the star etc...

Guys are getting signed all over the league. Whether it is free agency or with their same team....but not in Dallas....we love the churn, we love the ambiguity, we love the drama...all of these are ingredients for s championship culture!!!!!

And Dallas will become a Super Bowl contender by NOT paying for top talent? I'm so confused

And I missed the memo that Philly has stopped being a Super Bowl contender

Actually, what is your definition of a Super Bowl contender?

Clearly WE ALL dont!
Remember it was our owner who initially said this and what sparked this thread. Clearly it was intended to garner sympathy and support on his behalf in negotiations. Several fans throughout this thread have pointed out the fact these contracts don’t represent actual cap hits.

Yea, you have to give the Chiefs credit also for being way out in front of Mahomes deal after his 3rd season inking him in 2020 offseason to avoid any drama as he neared his 4th and 5th seasons of his Rookie contract. Most teams aren’t totally sold after 3 seasons if they have their QB. Cowboys should have known after Season 1. And with Dak only on 4 year Rookie deal could have probably resigned him for much less if they had been a couple years out in front.

We must also recall at the time this was largest contract in NFL history with a 10-year, $450 million extension which made him highest paid QB . The team reworked the deal last September so that Mahomes would make $208 million from 2023-26 . Which is 52 million a year.

The biggest difference is the long term commitment from the Chiefs. No other team in recent history I’m aware of has committed 10 years to a QB. Most teams don’t provide that level of long term security. Expect Mahomes to continue restructuring his contract as the market goes up as well.

Probably the biggest contract mistake the Cowboys have made recently is the handling of Dak's contract.

They have messed up every single step. Cost them many unnecessary millions of dollars.

Agree completely. The contract itself was not helpful for the Cowboys, but the way the front office mismanaged pretty much everything from how they approached an extension to how they managed the numbers on the back end.
