How good has Amari Cooper been?

I think it's safe to say that Cooper's stats are not a product of the caliber of his play but a product of the caliber of the QB that we have.

We basically went out and bought a Race Car but we just don't have anyone that knows how to drive it. Cooper will never live up to first-round draft pick unless there is a change at QB.

Personally, I have a feeling that we will overpay Cooper to keep him. His market value will tank under this system. It doesn't help that his 2017 season with the Raiders wasn't awful too. His stats will not reflect the player that he is and many people will not pay him like a #1 WR, well no one except maybe Jerry.

We haven't had a route runner that good since TO......so he's worth the 1st round pick.

He has already proven well worth a first round pick.

The impact he has made on the Cowboys offense is very obvious.
This.

Gallup and Beasley are now almost always single covered because the attention Cooper brings. Zeke even mentioned yesterday that since bringing in Cooper there's now 1 to 2 less defensive players in the box on average which is a huge deal for the run game.

Sometimes individual stats don't paint the whole pic.......

He's been 56 yards a game good..

I dont blame him though, he didnt choose to give himself up for a first round pick. He could probably do some damage here with a real qb.

After 3 games he has 14 receptions on 23 targets for 169 yards and 1 touchdown.

Extrapolate that over the course of a 16 game season and we're looking at

75 receptions, 901 yards, and 5 touchdowns.

True he hasn't had an offseason here and came halfway into the season, but certainly isn't looking worth a first round draft pick.

His greatest accomplishment is likely moving this team from a 5 win team to an 8 win team based on the margins. These numbers are barely better than Dez's numbers last year and he wouldn't have cost us a 1st round pick.

He walked in midseason and had to learn a new system with a new QB on short notice, and with an offense that features the running game. Given all that, the numbers aren't anything to sneeze at. Plus, we've won 2 of the 3 games, and the offense as a whole has been more productive, which in part could be due to Cooper drawing attention from opposing defense. I'm certainly willing to let it play out longer before judging.

Cooper is making a difference. He's pulling a defender out of the box, and drawing safety coverage on most plays. Zeke is benefiting especially.

However, I don't think Cooper will be happy with this and will want to leave when he can. He's a down-the-field receiver, and we don't have a QB that likes to go downfield.

Can you imagine him with the Rams, Packers, Chiefs, Saints, or Steelers?

He'd automatically be Brady's top guy.

1st Down Play Selection
before Cooper 42% pass 58% run
with Cooper 58% pass 42% run

Elliott's Success Rate on 1st & 10
% of touches/targets that gained 4+ yards
before Cooper 46% (39 of 85)
with Cooper 66% (21 of 32)

Conversion Rate
3rd Down
before Cooper 32% (29 of 91)
with Cooper 50% (20 of 40)

Conversion Rate by Pass
3rd Down, 5+ yards to go
before Cooper 20% (10 of 51)
with Cooper 33% (7 of 21)

I think you would need the all 22 to really study his impact. He's been huge for us.

It's also the reason Zeke is finally a factor in the passing game. He has more successful pass plays in the last three games than he had over the first 8 games.

Elliott's Success Rate
(passes only)
before Cooper 25.7% (9 of 35)
with Cooper 55.0% (11 of 20)

A play is "successful" if it gains 40% of yards needed on first down, 60% of yards needed on second down, and 100% of yards needed on third/fourth down.

It's the qb simple as that. I really think if Dez doesn't get hurt I think we would have saw that even more. That's why some didn't like the trade in the first place.

Dak has already miss two long throws on him that would’be been easy tds so it’s not fair to try extrapolate his production over 16 games.

No way. Dez was close to 900 yards last year and had 6 TDS. What you are describing is a very slight upgrade over 2017 Dez. That is not first round pick worthy. We need elite, #1 WR production for that. Something on the fringe of the top 10 which would be 1300-ish yards.
Randy Moss in his prime couldn't get 1,300 yards in this offense.

This was on 3rd down, correct?

I don't know what is going on with Dak in the pocket so I can only say that I hope he was under duress because this late ball turned a routine pitch and catch into a catch that needed heroics and gave the DB a chance to make a play on the ball.

Sure as heck is opening up the offense. Not the best numbers compared to other #1 receivers but if him drawing attention opens it up for others I'll live with that. He made some sick catches this past game

You gotta check your WR stat expectations at the door with Dak throwing the ball. Cooper gives us a credible down field threat that teams have to respect, and they must loosen things up just enough for Zeke. This isn't going to be a prolific offense like KC or NO. But, we can still win with long sustained drives that keep the opposing offense off the field.
