How good has Cooper been?

I would tell him we will do a good two year deal and if he is really good we will go all the way on the next contract. Sort of like what we did with Lael. Prove em deals.

Good luck with that. Cooper signed a one year deal with the Cowboys because he wanted to rebuild his reputation in the league for a bigger contract. If Dallas could have signed him to a longer term deal, they would have. All contracts favor the team over the player, especially one in Cooper's position.

He will be looking for the best contract he can get. From the Cowboys, or anyone else willing to pay him. This was the "prove it" year

Yeah but I think he hasn't been good enough where he's going to get a ridiculous deal. I suspect we can get him for a pretty decent contract.

But then again, that's dependent on the assumption the front office won't go cheap and think they can sign the stock boy at 7-11 to be our LG next year for a league minimum contract.

Chances the deal he gets would be more friendly for the Cowboys than what they knew Leary would want.

He got a one-year, $2 million contract this year. In a "prove it", "rebuild your career" season. And plenty of people mention "decent contract", while never offering anything in terms of numbers. I need to see some numbers on what's considered "decent".

Well, they did start off the season with Chaz Green out there, so all bets are off.

I bet you could get him for roughly half of what Leary got. Leary's cap hit these first two years is $8.5MM.

I bet we could get Cooper signed for like a $4MM cap hit. I think if he continues to show promise, I could live with that.

we should be carefully drafting OL in the first 5 rds every year. Only do it a little better then we did in the past as I recall all those 3rd and 4th round failures. REAL projects should be either 7th rd picks or UDFA. Free was the only one we got from the middle rounds that panned out for a VERY long time.
Do you think that's how we built the talent we have now at OL? It isn't. Thanks for your 2 cents but its worth less than that. :muttley: Stick to giving advice about things you know about.

I could too, if that were enough.

But, in looking at how things have been done to this point, I don't think Coooper will be into giving the Cowboys much of a discount if someone else offers him much more.

He signed a one year deal for a reason.

He did sign a one year deal for a reason.............. but it's not like he went out and had a pro bowl year in his show me year. He's been decent. I am not sure teams will be busting down the door to sign him to a large deal based on this season.

For what I expected hes been pretty good but we should be looking to upgrade.

I think Swing Tackle is a huge priority going into the offseason.

Byron Bell won't cut it and as solid as I thought Chaz Green was his performance against Atlanta made me lose all confidence.

Tough to say either way. At this point, we have no way of knowing. But there's no doubt that this team and this line are the highest profile in the league, he'll get attention.

One thing is for certain, the past few linemen from Dallas that hit free agency were paid, and paid well, when they got there.

Cooper has been better than expected. He has bought into the "hard work" ethic that the other Olinemen push and he seems to be playing with more confidence.

I do think they can still upgrade the spot, I do think Will Hernandez-OG (UTEP) is an option. He does need some development in pass protection, but the guy is a run-blocking monster and if this team's identity is running the ball, he would be a great asset to have.

*Full-disclosure, I am a UTEP alum and total UTEP homer, but have seen Hernandez his whole career there.

Full disclosure, I am not an alum, and Will Hernandez is still my pet cat for the 2018 draft.

But now I'm worried that word is out and he'll be shooting up the draft boards before the Cowboys can draft him.

Cooper has been a pleasant surprise just for the fact that he stole Chaz Green's spot, who all the coaches wanted to start, and we haven't heard from him since. Also playing between Smith and Frederick has to be the best thing that ever happened to him so far in his career. It seems we found our LG.

Cooper has regained the timing and technique that rust knocked off.
He's a bigger, stronger, different player than in college.

I think he is resigned because he doesn't seem likely to get huge offers and has a starting spot locked up here between two great players that are signed long-term.

What has really stood out is how well he is playing in run fits with those guys. His combo block with TFred are really nice and he's been able to stretch out to cover for TSmith as he pulls.

Bottom line, all things considered (cost, upcoming comp pick and play), it was unequivocally the correct decision despite the angst it did and has continued to generate.

Good vs the run , avg vs the pass. Would prob give him a 2 year extension, would like to still find an OL in the draft but we have quite a few other roles to fill so that is why I would extend him.

Oh he's definitely been a significant drop off from Leary.

He's been ok. Some good games and some not so good.

If it’s any consolation, Denver is getting whooped and Leary is protecting bums at QB..

After Jerry breaking the Cap space bank for Dez, letting Leary go and signing some cheap replacement was inevitable.

I'm talking about last year.

Cooper is inferior to 2016 Leary. By a lot too.
According to my abacus, Leary is only 3 notches ahead. Leary was good, but Cooper will get better and gain two more notches when he gets his 3 year extension next season.
