Just like with romo Garrett is hoping the QB overcomes his horrid coaching. This time he doesn't have a seasoned vet to make it happen.

Very true. But most HC’s are dependent on their QB to carry the team.

If Garrett was all in on Dak this could be it for him.

He had his most effective season with Murray but not most productive.

Romo without a strong running game was still putting up big numbers.

The sarcasm is appreciated. Time will tell with Dak. But fewer and fewer are sold on his passing abilities.

I'm not sold, I'm simply stating that the entire offense is playing like total ****. Top to bottom. I get that "most put the blame on the Q." But that doesn't mean it's accurate.

Good coaches scheme to players strengths and put them into position to excel. Look at the turnover each year "most HC's" get fired when they fail.

Amazing. The team FINALLY used the running game and the QB had his best season. Fans were up in arms the team would abandon the running game. Garrett would say every week "we need to run the football more". Blow a 26-3 lead throwing the ball instead of running when Murray is gashing the defense.

It all relative. Compared to Romo or Steve Young, he was not mobile. Maybe compared to Peyton Manning. Running and rolling were never something Aikman was known for.

My apologies for that omission. I guess I was just blinded by 8 years of Julius Jones, Felix Jones and Marion Barber. I don't know how many times Tony would throw for 8 or 9 yds on first down, only to run the ball on 2nd and 3rd and not pick up the first down. It was hard to watch.

I think there’s defintely some issues on OL that still haven’t been resolved from 2014 along with missing Frederick and the loss of Dez and Witten is greater than many thought it would be. Several contributing factors.

But I think the point of this thread is Romo had the ability to overcome less surrounding support at least in moving the ball and scoring.

But even then, the running game wasn't horrible. There were some good years. Years where it was good enough. It seemed like every year there was something to prevent us moving forward. Maybe Jones sold his sole to the devil for the 3 SB wins and we're cursed.

I think this is another over-exaggerated claim about Romo's teams. I didn't run the numbers on 2nd down, but I did run the numbers on 3rd and 4th and short (1&2 yards) when someone claimed we couldn't run on short yardage. From 2006-2014 we gained a 1st down or TD on 74.28% of the opportunities. 2014 is widely regarded as our best running year and we were at 77.41% conversion. There were 4 other years that we converted a higher % than 2014 (2006, 2007, 2012, and 2013). We had one bad year two bad years (2009 and 2001). This based upon the ESPN splits.

I think people focused more on the failures once it became a perception, but we succeeded in picking up short yardage much more than we failed.

It would help if the RBs were handed the ball more often. We were a pass happy team.

Here are the Yards Per Carry season ranking and then the # of rushing attempts league ranking from 2006 - 2014.

2006 - YPC - 15th; total # of rushing attempts 12th
2007 - 10th; 17th
2008 - 12th; 25th
2009 - 2nd; 21st
2010 - 15th; 15th (ran ball more after Romo was injured)
2011 - 9th; 24th
2012 - 30th; 31st
2013 - 8th; 31st
2014 - 3rd; 3rd

Only once did the Cowboys have a yards per carry average in the bottom half of the league under Romo and that was in 2012, but we were in the bottom half of the league in rushing attempts in 6 of the 9 years.

We had the ability to run the ball, we ran it pretty successfully, we even converted on short yardage at a high rate but we chose to pass the ball instead of run. We didn't pass because we couldn't run, we did it because that is what the coaches preferred to do.
