How great was Romo?

I guess some fans when watching the games see things differently .

I see a team who needs a greater passing QB. That appears to be the largest contributing factor.

But like many aspects we don’t all see with the same set of eyes and or have hidden agendas coming in.
We have that in Dak and well proven in his rookie season. Now he doesn't have Romo on the sidelines & Butt Fumble as his mentor.

You're not looking at Dak' poor performance, you're looking at Kellen Moore' poor coaching.

He was very good. Could've been great with smart ownership and real coaching. But instead he was saddled with Jerry and Garrett but at least they got a top ten passing game out of the deal. That's all that existed during Romo's tenure.

Is Dak part of the problem?
This season? 100%. After the Atlanta game, 2017? Yep.
I know you keep suggesting I'm some "Dak-do-no-wrong" but I'm not.
I'm able to analyze and use other's analysis to form a solid opinion.
And you mentioned the O line hasn't been the same since 2014. I disagree.2016 was a badass O line, pass protection and run block. Elliott thrived. Prescott was clean and efficient.
Ron Leary and Doug Free were WAY better than the current mess. Plus Smith is playing badly and Fred is out. New OL coach. HUGE difference in the O line, would you agree?
Which effects the run game. Elliott has some yardage, but isn't scoring. He's not been as dominate as he was in 2016, would you agree?
We had Witten. Now what do we even have? TE production is much different now than 2016 and we have a different TE coach, would you agree?
The WR's is much different, WR coaching, MUCH different, would you agree?

When has Romo ever had to hurdle all of that? Even when we were 8-8, he had more tools.

Lots of folks are all in on our defense. Here's what I see. It's better. But is not elite or even in the ball park. It's improved from the last few years, but did you see the Carolina and Seattle game?
What did you notice? They ran when they wanted to. Maybe not flashy, but they pounded the middle and our middle looked old and tired. The CB's are excellent. The LBers are better and we have what looks to be a decent group of pass rushers.
What are er missing? Same **** I've been whining about for years! We need elite DT's. And our safeties are "just good enough"

So while they are better and I'm optimistic because I'm a defensive fella, it needs to get better.
Wait until we play a great offense. I predict a big loss in the future when we hit late season. Somewhere around Atlanta, Philly or New Orleans.

That brings us to Prescott. I love the kid and think he's a fantastic guy, but he's not a passing QB gunslinger like Romo. If things don't improve, I guess try and get a QB early next offseason and hope he can carry all of that mess. No QB has yet to do it in Dallas. He's sloppy under pressure. They don't use him like they did VS NYG. He was better. There's nobody open deep that he has time to see. He can't freestyle and extend broken plays like Romo passing-wise. But, Prescott is more dangerous running dives etc. He's raw. He's young and he's snakebitten because so many fans think he was an ALL Pro in 2016 and think everything is the same BUT him. It's not, not even close. But I feel he STILL needs to get much better.

Sorry for the rant.

Sorry dude, we just gonna have to agree to disagree. One 1,000 yd season(just barely) over 8 years don't cut it
All good man, nothing personal. I think if we understood each other we probably agree more than not.

Romo had elite level talent. He was top 5 amongst his peers for his entire career. The best escape artist/improviser I have ever seen play. Great accuracy as well and he could make all of the throws. He also matured into a field general, offensive coordinator on the field.

There were a lot of near misses in his career.
How did Jerry let Sean Payton out the door? His whole career was wasted with Wade and JG as coaches. He had a well documented horrible offensive scheme.

He almost never had a defense or a run game. There’s plenty of stats about this out there.

They drafted 2 busts with 2 first rounders in 2008. They burned the entire 2009 draft... traded 2 picks for Roy Williams.

The offensive lines were AWFUL for the bulk of his career. He took a lot of hits.

There was a lot going against him...Mostly the Jones family. He elevated the team and kept them afloat. I think that makes him a pretty elite player. Talent wise? Right there behind Staubach.

I agree that Romo led teams that looked like 4 win teams on paper to .500 records a few years.

This narrative that he was a choke artist and threw picks all the time in crucial moments is just a bunch of hogwash. Sure, he made mistakes at key moments from time to time, but no more so than all the other Quarterbacks in the league. His 4th Qtr and overtime stats are outstanding and rank at the top in some categories all-time. His TD/INT ratio is alittle over 2:1 for his career.

I think he was one of the most underrated players that has come along for awhile.
