How Long Does Garret Get? Realistically.

If we fail to make the playoffs again next year, that will be 2.5 seasons under Garrett. We will have a pool of 40 games in which to judge him, so the question is how long does he get?

Gailey was fired after 2 seasons, Campo got 3 seasons, Wade got 3.5 seasons and that was with a playoff win.

So 2.5 is not out of line with what other coaches have been given. I have been reading on here that we have to give Garrett 4 or 5 seasons to put his plan in place. Well it doesnt appear previous coaches were giving that much time and some had playoff success as well.

I think if Garrett fails to make the playoffs again next year after having a full offseason and OTAs, then I think it will be very hard to sell to the fans that he is the right guy for the job. Just curious to see if others feel the same way.

It's hard to say how long Jerry will go with Garrett he stuck with Campo after 2 straight 5-11 seasons. If the Cowboys show no noticeable improvement next season missing the playoffs again and we continue to see the same confusion on the field and on the sidelines then I would find it hard to believe Jerry would stick with Garrett for another season.

Weren't we pretty much out of playoff contention in the first half you are talking about? Not sure why that would count. I just don't think it is smart to change coaches, HEAD coaches, every couple years.

2 more years. Possibly 3. It isn't like he came into a ready made football powerhouse.

Ready made football powerhouses don't lose their current HC unless for personal reasons i.e, age, health, family and/or wanting to retire on top.

Cowher: His wife was dying of cancer and eventually did.

Dungy: Son committed suicide after noted attempts the year prior.

Reid: Almost folded due to his sons being in and out of Jail.

Vermeil: Wanted to retire on top. Age.

Belichick: Still ticking

Coughlin: Still ticking

Tomlin: Still ticking

Payton: Still ticking

McCarthy: Still ticking

Other than Gruden those are the coaches who have pretty much won the Super Bowl in the last decade or more. Andy Reid never won a title but has been to the Super Bowl and has been to 4 conference chamiponships. His run deserves to be noted.

Thats a question no one knows! After all We do have Jerry Jones running the team. hes says hell be here next year but tomorrow may fire him. Jerry never sticks with what you hear him say! I still say if Garrett is here next year pleeeeease bring in an OC!!!

Barring major injury issues, he should be fired if he fails to make the playoffs next season.

Depends on how the team performs.
Yup. Can't guarantee anything next year.

If they come out of the gate 1-7 again I don't see how you keep him around.

2 more years. look up and down the roster, the talent is pathetic. holes everywhere.

Dboy, I usually see your side of things but saying that the talent is pathetic is going over board. The talent on this team is mediocre hence the 8-8 record. We have some good players on the team but we probably have more bad to medioce players.

Garrett gets another 2-3 years. If he fails it won't just be him leaving, but also the core players from the Parcells era (Romo, Ware, Witten, Ratliff, etc.).

I hope they fire him today and actually get someone with experience, and preferable someone who has skins on the wall, but in reality, he'll be here another year stinking up the joint. Bad Karma again for Jerry to hire his future Coach, while Wade watched.

I agree. We need someone to teach these bunch of nerds how to play. :D I think Garrett is excuse making about a lot when he should just admit he is in over his head. I wish he was more intense. Instead, you see him holding his play calling card over his mouth like a dufas. He doesn't appear to be that confident as a head coach and you just can't teach the things he needs to learn.

This season had potential. In my mind, this will go down as the most wasted opportunity we've had in terms of personnel vs. what we accomplished in the W column.

Is this considered rebuilding years?

If so, you got to give him at least 4-5 years to get the pieces and make a run.

Next to Norv Turner and Mike Shanahan, Jason Garrett has to be the coach on the hottest seat entering the 2012 season. Anything less then a playoff birth should and probably will result in his dismissal.

Those suggesting Garrett gets another 2-3 years are delusional. The rebuilding model where you retool for three years then attempt to compete the third year is just not the way today's NFL works. Seven of the ten coaches currently in the league who have been coaching 5+ seasons have been to a Super Bowl, five have won it. The championship expectations are higher in Dallas the any of those ten cities. Bottom line; there's no way Garrett gets another three full seasons without at least an NFC Championship game appearance.

Let's see. Jimmy got a pass after 1-15. Then got a pass after a 7-9 season. Yet another sub .500 performance. Hmmm. That's 2 right there. So yeah, let's pull a Bucs and Rams and fire Jason after next if he does not realize his potential.

Not gonna happen. Stay the course. Of course you know I am only talking to happy fans. ;)

And as an admitted sunshine pumping idiot, I believe after a full offseason of FA and the draft, mini-camps, TC, we will make the playoffs and then some. You heard it here first. Enjoy the offseason my friends.... realists and pumpers alike. Enjoy.

More of a redecorating that a rebuilding.

I agree with 4-5 years. And the main reason is because that is how long we have (optimistically) for the Ware, Romo, Witten windows will close. If we haven't gotten it done by then.... oh boy.

I have a feeling he's going to get quite a bit more time to prove himself. Jerry is comfortable with him, and that's all that matters.

3 years after Romo retires. I think Garrett is here not only to guide Romo into the end of his career, but also rebuild the team after. The moves this year proved that.

Jimmy started off with a talentless 3-13 team and was forced to clean house his first year. The Cowboys underwent a complete overhaul in 89. Jimmy went from 1-15 in 89 with a roster full of inexperienced players to 7-9 in 90 which was an improvement. That team was clearly in rebuilding mode but you could see the team had made some strides. Garrett started off with a lot more talent than Jimmy did. He had the Cowboys playing better football at the end of the 2010 season with Kitna at QB than he did at the end of this past season with Romo at QB.

The Cowboys finished the 2010 season 3-2 and that team had nothing to play for. They finished this past season 1-4 with everything to play for but you wouldn't have known it by the lack of fire and passion the team showed. The Cowboys were a better team early in the 2011 season than they were late in the season. Even the defense looked better early in the season but the entire team got worse as the season went on. Hopefully it won't take several more bad seasons for Jerry to hire a qualified HC who knows how to manage the clock and isn't stupid enough to freeze their own kicker.
