Just curious how long it takes people to get to work and how they feel about it.

I currently live and work in the middle of downtown. It takes me minutes to walk to work. I'm considering moving across the water to a small town because it's cheaper and quieter, but that would add a 1-hour ferry ride both ways along with anywhere from 30-60 minutes each way getting to/from the ferry/work. So that's going from a 10-minute round trip commute to a 3-4 hour commute. Big change. Fortunately, the 2 hours spent on the ferry has WiFi and private tables, so I can get work done there and spend less time in the office. Still not sure if it's worth it.

Don't do it. The work commute is very important. You already have enough stress just working. Why add the stress of a 3-4 hour commute?

Do what's best for your family, not yourself. If a longer commute equates to a better school and neighborhood.......take that into consideration.

Look on the bright side, you get to ride a boat in the Sound five days a week :)

Horrible advice. Do what's right for you and your family. If you die of a heart attack is that doing your family any good?

My bad, I didn't realize that he was so delicate that a commute would kill him which millions upon millions of people do every day

FWIW, I meant do it for his family, not just thinking about himself. I commute as does my wife so the kids can live in the best situation possible. He lives in Seattle which I know very well and I think a commute is a good idea there as there are a lot of suburban areas to live in that are much nicer than the inner city.

Of course you look at what is best for the person AND the family but I stated not to make a decision based solely on his commute time. Many of us drive to work from a ways out, it is a bit dramatic to say he drops dead of a heart attack from sitting in a car/boat!

If that added stress causes a heart ailment, then there are bigger issues to tackle..........

I had a forty minute minimum commute from the job in the city to our rural home for eighteen years. Lived in the city for five years prior. The commute was well worth the peace and privacy of the rural setting. I generally didn't mind the commute. A half hour to wake up and get ready for the day in the morning and the same to unwind in the evening. I listened to music or Stern or the NFL on Sirius. It did begin to get old the last couple years though. More traffic and worse drivers. Used to be an inch of snow didn't slow things down at all. Now you can count on being stuck in a jam with even the slightest amount of snow.

So I made some changes and now I have a ten minute commute from that same home. I can even get some trail riding in by taking the "shortcut" if I take one of my motorcycles.

Yes...the radio does a lame 4:20 smoke break bit where they play a couple of songs and of course it is sponsored by a vape shop that also carries special glass ware items lol.

That's why I remember it is always around 4:20 because either the first song is playing when I pull in the car port or the second but usually never hear the next song.

About 45 mins from door to door. Includes a 15 min walk to the tram stop. At one time I had a 1.5-2hr commute each way every day. Was a killer.

Have two work rules.

1. Commute must be less than 1hr.

2. Will only work close to the city centre. Have badly missed the convenience of working in the city at times when I've worked in the suburbs - easier to run errands or meet people for lunch. Also like the compartmentalisation of work/city and home/suburbs.
