How LVE is hurting this run defense

Quinn's usage of LVE is really interesting for anyone that spends enough time studying it. Nobody will understand Quinn's usage of LVE by watching 1
LVE plays stack & shed in Quinn's scheme.
- It is similar to 2-gap by DLinemen.

His role is to engage the OLineman blocking on the 2nd level. If you watch enough game footage you'll see him seek out a blocker that is attempting to get to another defender.

Quinn's requirement is for LVE to end up on the same side of the blocker as the ball carrier. It is expected that a 255 pound LB will give up ground to a 320 pound OLineman.

They goal is for other defenders to make the tackle before the ball carrier gets to LVE with LVE there to cleanup when they don't.

This concept frees up other players like Micah Parsons to not have rigid gap responsibilities. That allows Parsons to roam and make big plays.

In Quinn's scheme the other defenders key off of LVE taking on the 2nd level blocker. Their lateral flow does not suddenly get stopped by that blocker because the blocker is already engaged with LVE.

LVE engaged with the 2nd level blocker forces the ball carrier to commit to one side of that blocker. This makes it easier for other defenders to take good angles.

Nuh uh! LVE sucks, cuz I see it!

Unfortunately, that's the reaction you'll get from everyone who's already made up his mind about it. Is he the best LB on the team? No. But he's better than a lot of other LBs in the league. If we can upgrade with someone who can knock a 320 pound OL on the ground, then get to the ball carrier, sure I'd be willing to do that. This argument that he's "slow and lumbering" is unjustified, because we've seen him run across the field to catch and tackle a RB from behind, after that RB has made a couple of other defenders miss. People are just stuck on what they saw a couple of years ago, and refuse to let go. They need to blame someone for any first down, and it can't be someone they like.

They did the same thing to Jeff Heath.

Just posted this in another thread. Great breakdown. On the TD run, even in real time, it was amazing what a lack of instincts that showed.

LVE is not playing as horrible as many claim. But we still can use an upgrade in a big way.

How do I know this, well, the old eye test proof….well, I did just get an eye exam, my new glasses will be ready within 14 days.

There's a lot of white guys on team. Is this group picking on Zack, Maher, McGovern, Biadasz etc? Why would they stop at LVE?

You on here playing a race card, but fail to tell us what was wrong with the analysis of the tape.

The neck issues have changed him as a player. He plays much more cautiously and much less physically than he did earlier in his career.

I was the band leader trumpeting how bad Jaylon Smith was at football. There were folks on those threads that thought LVE was being left out of the criticism due to his lack of melanin.

For one, the guy on the tape doesn't know what he's talking about.
I was never issued a race card.

It really did. He was a revelation as a rookie and just never got his flexibility and physicality back.

I remember. Smith was awful.
Film shows LVE missing a gap.
Smith would run completely out of the picture.
LVE is no superstar but there are plenty worse in the league.

Funny you mention Aikman. Maybe you should research that one a bit.
He had players and a coach suggest he was too hard on the black players.
None other than Charles Haley set'em straight. Look it up.
Why should I keep my thoughts to myself? Nobody else does.
The guy who does these videos is a clown.
Those who follow his opinions are ignorant to the game.
