How LVE is hurting this run defense

Are you saying DQ has a scheme where the MLB is functioning as NT (2 gap)? C'mon mane.

When I watched the clips, that's how it looked like LVE was intentionally playing. Stack and shed instead of fill a gap. It's a bad look for a LB, but a real technique.

Unfortunately, he's bad at both the stack and the shed, so it looks especially bad for him.

If you think these clips look bad, go see all the clips where he picks the wrong gap to fill.

I'm relatively positive on LVE, but he's just not good in the wash. Coverage LB, open field tackler. But as many pointed out, despite his size he doesn't bring any aggression or impact to his play at LB, and he gets lost as well.

He's Dalton Schultz playing defense. Good in the pass game, a liability in the run game.

I like akoye's videos. I have been watching them for a long time. I started watching them when he used to sit in his car after games and talk about the cowboys. He does good boxing videos as well.

Akoye has talked a lot on his videos on the lb'ers, going back to marineli with jaylon and lve. If you have watched his videos, he is no fan of LVE

But it is a good video. It shows a variety of plays, shows missed assignments, gaps, plays made, and not made.

Regardless of his assignment, the posters overall assessment and the theme of the video was "LVE is indecisive and is not confident", I think he showed that there are plays where that is true

LVE role very similar to Bobby Wagner role in Seattle in DQ system.

Same role different results.

You're comparing him to Bobby Wagner.
DQ is comparing him to Jaylon Smith.

No, that is by design.

LVE's role is to engage the OL blocking on the 2nd level. It is similar to a DLineman playing 2-gap.
...
Quinn's scheme has schematic answers for most versions of the zbs and a big part of the answer is LVE playing stack & shed technique instead of run & hit technique.
...
LVE's performance was top 2 on defense in the playoff game. He had 13 total tackles. The problem is that the goal in Quinn's scheme is for other defenders to make the tackle before the RB gets to LVE.

By eyeball, it looked like LVE was trying to basically two gap the plays.

But who are you supposing would be making the tackle prior to LVE? Our mediocre DTs? If the two gap pattern is what they're going after for the MLB, the natural free runners to hit the gaps would be the safeties, leaving LVE with the responsibility to be the last line of defense, and therefore play rather passively and not stack and shed as much as not let the play get behind him.

Seems a conceivable defensive strategy, and pretty consistent with what we observe on defense, with LVE looking passive, but the Safeties making plays, but I've never heard of it before.

Looks to me like LVE doesn’t trust others to do their jobs and he feels like he has to clean up rather than be aggressive.

That's the thing - maybe it's his designated role to be that cleanup players. Seems and odd role for a MLB to me, but a conceivable strategy to let the Safeties hit the gaps and the MLB play the last line of defense.

Like the creator of the video, we don't know. That is the same problem stat keepers, tv media, youtube land, fans have with defensive back assignments, a lot of times only the people in the meetings know

It’s absolute nonsense.

To think Quinn designed a defense to have linebackers occupy offensive linemen to allow defensive backs to clean up is buffoonery.

"Buffoonery" is not much of an argument.

Use your words. What's wrong with that strategy? Everyone keeps saying how wonderful our safeties are in run support. Maybe that's because the strategy is designed to let them make the plays.

It's always true that we don't *know*, but that's never stopped us from *inferring* before.

- Great break down by Akoye with LVE film session. i wanted to add this to the existing LVE thread,
but could not find it.

- This is why we seriously need an upgrade over LVE

- Something must be up with Anthony Barr as they dont see him an immediate replacement.
He's a sore spot but LVE is NOT the only one that is killing this run defense, but he's a start as
to why.

- Despite his immense size and length, he's just not instinctive and physical enuff
he looks like Tarzan ,,but he plays like Jane,

Am I the only one who watched that video and thought it was just a horrible analysis? LVE has trouble shedding blocks, seems to have poor instincts as he often guesses the wrong hole and has had trouble with missed tackles, but this guy was completely doing a hit piece and half of what he criticized was borderline fabricated and certainly exaggerated. A couple of those plays he did nothing wrong and on a few more he took the pulling Guard strong and stuffed him right in the hole. Ideally you shed and make the tackle, but let’s not act like that’s easy with a guard running downhill in a tight space and not out in open space. This dude obviously just has an issue with LVE and tried to make a video to match his agenda but IMO failed miserably. And I don’t even think LVE is all that great. But at least I’m fair with my criticism

Maybe he's friends with that guy that started the "LVE Is Horrible" thread (or whatever it was)...No wait, that guy probably doesn't have any friends.

Should have gotten Deion Jones. He was better than LVE on the field.

Brown is an always has been a JAG (I don't care what PFF has to say)

LVE had a stretch of games he played decently in 4 years ago. Since then, a complete bust.

the league has 5 maybe 10 corners a year who are not jags, and a lot of that has to do with what is around them. In actuality is more likely around 3 who are not jags. Then you have everyone else and varying degrees in between. Brown is a good corner

I would love to see Jerry make a trade for Roquan Smith.

I don't think it was a hit piece, just a guy assuming a standard MLB role for LVE and not seeing LVE fulfill that role. With that assumption, most but not all of the plays look bad. Sometimes I think he overplayed how bad it was, but mostly I'd agree, *if* his role was a classic MLB role.

So you believe the run defense is setup so that our third level defenders (safeties) can make the play?

If so, that’s a non-starter. It’s as silly conceptually as RonaldT24 claiming Zeke is supposedly not breaking big runs on purpose to wear out the defense.

Our safeties *do* make a lot of plays in run defense.

When you'd play that scheme would probably depend down, distance, and reads, but it's consistent with what we *observe*.

Lol. Me Jane, me likie Tarzan.

All kidding aside, LVE looks lost out there. And when he tries making plays, he just looks hideous! Exactly why they didn't extend his contract.

There's a group of people who just love to pick on the white guy here.
They did the same thing to Jeff Heath.
People in here can think what they want about LVE but in his rookie year he was a really solid player. He was the guy that was getting after the ball carrier and was good at stuffing the run. He was a pro bowler and he was in the running for defensive rookie of the year. However in his second year, he had that terrible
injury. As someone said earlier, he became hesitant to come in and make that big hit. It's too bad because he would have been a really good one.
