He never got enough credit for his contributions to our great teams of the 90's. There were a few years there where he was one of the most dominant players in the sport. I'm not talking about stats either. I'm talking about huge, game changing plays, while still managing to hardly ever make mistakes. All the while playing special teams. He never took plays off. He was everywhere. In his prime, Dallas lined him up against the likes of Jerry Rice ONE on ONE. He was special. Big strong fast and tough. I miss him much. HOF for sure. He re-defined the possition, regardless of Packer fans and their love of Leroy Butler. Darren never got to blitz much, but he was great when he did. Butler got to blitz all the time.

Woodson was a very good player, but a lot of Cowboys fans overrate how good he was -- and how many "game-changing plays" he made.

If he had been scrutinized the way players are scrutinized today, most fans would have wanted him cut long before Roy even joined the team.

I'm 22 and I remember Woody like it was yesterday. If you were a true fan in the terrible season we had In the late 90s and early 00's You knew what Woody brought to the table..To bad the rest of the team in those days had terrible coaching, terrible GM by Jerry, Terrible players and old players past their prime.

And yes Woody made Roy...He covered his but and gave him advice. Now roy is a out of shape softy.

are you kidding right? woodson was one of the most CONSISTENT and non mistake players i ever see, he can cover, hit, tackle, blitz. Why in the hell most fans would have wanted him cut if he was the heart of the secundary.

In this times he could be one of the better SS.

So, you think fans these days would be happy with a safety who has a season in which he gets only two interceptions, allows eight TD passes and has one of the worst tackling percentages in the league?

In the 1990s, nobody publicized things like that. Nobody made a big deal about what defensive backs did or did not allow. These days, people like K.C. Joyner and Football Outsiders keep track and publicize those things. And once they mentioned that Darren Woodson was one of the worst safeties for allowing touchdown passes and missing tackles in a particular season, fans would be calling for him to be cut immediately -- especially given that he averaged only 1.6 interceptions per season after 1996.

Bob Sanders has 4 interceptions in 4 seasons average 1 per season and he was MVP.

You cant be all pro all the seasons you play dude, im not a stadistics guy but im watching stats and woodson´s numbers in his LASTS (not the best)seasons are very close to polamalu, adrian wilson, bob sanders, michael lewis and many others good SS in this days and i think the fans of this players are very happy.

Woody made the D calls back there and covered for Roy allowing him to blow people up and terrorize WRs. He also could lay wood with the best of them and he had the speed to get it done. HOF? No. Not even close. But he was very good and he made Roy look better then anyone else ever has.

I remember woodson and I remember loving his play, but I am not sure I would put him at the HOF level of play. AdamJT is pretty spot on in his assesment.

Woody was a physical freak, he was a GREAT player for the BOYS.

He had the ability to play the slot reciever, come up and support the run, and play center field! I wish Roy had HALF of Woody's coverage ability...

Not only was he a great player, but he was a LEADER on a defense with a lot of talented players........

GREATNESS!!!!

I certainly do. My favorite Cowboys player along with Randy White, Bill Bates and Demarcus Ware. He could bring the wood and was exceptional at coverage.

The hit he put on Darrel Jackson (Seahawks) was one of the most violent I have seen and it was 100% clean (therefore I do not know why he was fined).

I hope he gets into the hall of fame (in my book there is no doubt he should be) but I doubt he is gonna get voted in.

What with all the patronizing threads lately...?

Just last week someone was asking if anyone here remembered Emmitt and Irvin. Woodson retired what 5 years ago? If you're not old enough to remember him, you're probably not posting on this board.

Hey everyone, remember Quincy Carter? Was he great or what?

LOL. POTD.

with all this Roy talk about how he didnt want the pass to come his way and trying to hide a safety in coverage, how many of you young'uns remember that in the nickel, Woody would cover the slot receiver? Looking back at it, Woody made Roy.

I remember how great he was cause I saw his entire career. He was special. You don't have guys like him come along every year, or every 5 years.

He was the biggest reason Roy was so good his Rookie year cause it allowed Roy to play up in the box and to blitz. Since Woody has been gone it's been nearly impossible to allow Roy to do those things.

Woody was the man.

He was a great teamate and leader. He was extremely flexible...being able to cover hit and blitz, really made it hard for offenses to find weak spots in the defense on his watch. He was a big special team player for his whole career as well.

The Safety position is hard to judge with stats but I'd take Woody over any other Safey not named Ronnie any day.

I was a Woodson fan, but I didn't know just how important he was to our D until he was gone. I took him for granted, but I'll never do that again. If we ever get another safety of his caliber, I will know what a blessing it is.

Agreed.

I'll always remember being mad all those years we had bad teams after the Super Bowl runs and he didn't get into the Pro Bowl because of it. I always thought that the amount of Pro Bowls he should have gone to he would be a HOFer. I don't know that he would now, but I sure remember his dominance.
