If he had been scrutinized the way players are scrutinized today, most fans would have wanted him cut long before Roy even joined the team.

In this times he could be one of the better SS.
AdamJT13;2072386 said:So, you think fans these days would be happy with a safety who has a season in which he gets only two interceptions, allows eight TD passes and has one of the worst tackling percentages in the league?
In the 1990s, nobody publicized things like that. Nobody made a big deal about what defensive backs did or did not allow. These days, people like K.C. Joyner and Football Outsiders keep track and publicize those things. And once they mentioned that Darren Woodson was one of the worst safeties for allowing touchdown passes and missing tackles in a particular season, fans would be calling for him to be cut immediately -- especially given that he averaged only 1.6 interceptions per season after 1996.

I'm not talking about stats either. I'm talking about huge, game changing plays, while still managing to hardly ever make mistakes. All the while playing special teams. He never took plays off. He was everywhere. In his prime, Dallas lined him up against the likes of Jerry Rice ONE on ONE. He was special. Big strong fast and tough. I miss him much. HOF for sure. He re-defined the possition, regardless of Packer fans and their love of Leroy Butler. Darren never got to blitz much, but he was great when he did. Butler got to blitz all the time.

Just last week someone was asking if anyone here remembered Emmitt and Irvin. Woodson retired what 5 years ago? If you're not old enough to remember him, you're probably not posting on this board.
Hey everyone, remember Quincy Carter? Was he great or what?
Nexx;2072033 said:with all this Roy talk about how he didnt want the pass to come his way and trying to hide a safety in coverage, how many of you young'uns remember that in the nickel, Woody would cover the slot receiver? Looking back at it, Woody made Roy.

BraveHeartFan;2072523 said:He was the biggest reason Roy was so good his Rookie year cause it allowed Roy to play up in the box and to blitz. Since Woody has been gone it's been nearly impossible to allow Roy to do those things.
Boyzmamacita;2072086 said:I was a Woodson fan, but I didn't know just how important he was to our D until he was gone. I took him for granted, but I'll never do that again. If we ever get another safety of his caliber, I will know what a blessing it is.
