How much better could we be after the draft? It is quite possible we might be much better. What is the reason for today's optimism? Past history. We have drafted better lately, and lots of guys that we have had out eye on have turned out to be "ballers". Bobby Wagner comes to mind. Maybe this turns out to be the year, the cards fall our way for a change.

We could trade down a few spots and reasonably assume we could get a starter on the DL in the first. I'm not talking about just a player who fills a position ... I am talking about this year's Travis Frederick. This one isn't a stretch at all.

In the second round, is it that far fetched to believe that it is impossible for us to find a stud linebacker in the draft? It happened with Lee. It almost happened with Wagoner. It happens again for us this year. By round two, we could have a new defensive lineman, and a stud linebacker who can plug and play this year.

In round three it is all about value. If we acquire another pick in the third via a trade down, it isn't that far fetched to believe that this year's DeMarco Murry is setting there for the taking. A guy that we value as a first round pick is there for the taking .... and we take him. That gives us the option of keeping Murrray and having depth at running back, or if the price of keeping him is too steep to let him walk at the end of this year.

With the other third round pick, it is possible that this year's Terrance Williams is there for the taking, or maybe a guard falls to us there and we solidify the offensive line a bit more.

Is it that hard to believe with all the picks we have in the 4th through 7th rounds that we can't add another decent wide receiver (think Harris), a dt (think Ratliff) maybe a stud punter in the 7th round, and a guy like Millard who could help out the offense?

Hard to know until you get those players in camp, pre season and real games. To me the big key is can Dallas eliminate some of these injuries. I have never seen a team with so many hamstring injuries

So we could end up with Travis Frederick in the 1st, Sean Lee in the 2nd, DeMarco Murray and Terrance Williams in the 3rd, Dwayne Harris and Jay Ratliff late, as well as a stud punter and a productive FB in this draft class?

Sure, I suppose we could but a check of our draft history makes it highly unlikely. Bordering on impossible.

All those guys you listed outside of Ratliff have been drafted in the last 4 years. We aren't drafting worldbeaters but we have had a fair amount of success finding guys that can play under Garrett.

Three solid starters in what has been called the deepest draft in 30 years is probably about what I would expect.

Good post except you're forgetting one thing. You still have Jeff Heath and JJ Wilcox patrolling at safety. For me Seattle showed just how bad we really are there and how important that position has become with offenses creating match-ups.

It's become an organizational afterthought but we ignore safety at our own peril.

Much better drafts of late is a bit misleading

Claiborne
Crawford
Johnson
Wilber

This draft up until now had been god awful

A direct correlation with why we are still 8-8

Is it that far fetched to believe we hit on every single pick? Yes.

My original post did not say anything about hitting on every single pick. You seem to forget we have 6 picks in the 7th round alone. At what point did I suggest that we could find 6 pro bowlers in the 7th round?

You want realistic? Yes, by all means, let's be realistic.

Should we be able to find a starter in round 1? I would think that is a more than reasonable expectation.

Can we find a starter at a non premier position in round 2 (excluding OT, corner, QB, receiver and pass rusher). That sounds reasonable to me too.

Running backs are found every year as late as the 6th round who end up starting. Morris of the Commanders readily comes to mind. So why is it a stretch to think we can't find one in the 3rd?

Offensive guard is a fairly low priority for most teams and they tend to fall in the draft. So you think it isn't likely that we could find a rotational quality/eventual starter guard in the 3rd?

We most likely will have 8 picks in the 4th, 5th and 7th rounds combined. You don't think we could draft a fullback, a punter, and at least have the chance of finding ONE more decent player or two out of that many picks? Seriously? You think it is THAT FAR FETCHED?

Everyone thought Flozell Adams was a bust too until we put decent talent around him, and he ended up being good enough that we wanted to keep him around. Crawford got injured. That doesn't mean that he can't play. He might turn out to be a bust, but it is possible that he would have been the most dominant player on our defensive line last year. We just don't know yet.
