How much better could we be after the draft?

My original post did not say anything about hitting on every single pick. You seem to forget we have 6 picks in the 7th round alone. At what point did I suggest that we could find 6 pro bowlers in the 7th round?

You want realistic? Yes, by all means, let's be realistic.

Should we be able to find a starter in round 1? I would think that is a more than reasonable expectation.

Can we find a starter at a non premier position in round 2 (excluding OT, corner, QB, receiver and pass rusher). That sounds reasonable to me too.

Running backs are found every year as late as the 6th round who end up starting. Morris of the Commanders readily comes to mind. So why is it a stretch to think we can't find one in the 3rd?

Offensive guard is a fairly low priority for most teams and they tend to fall in the draft. So you think it isn't likely that we could find a rotational quality/eventual starter guard in the 3rd?

We most likely will have 8 picks in the 4th, 5th and 7th rounds combined. You don't think we could draft a fullback, a punter, and at least have the chance of finding ONE more decent player or two out of that many picks? Seriously? You think it is THAT FAR FETCHED?

With Jerry Jones having the final vote, anything is possible...except having a great draft, that is...

Finding a starter in Round 1 is like a 75% possibility
In round 2, 40%
in round 3 30%

These stats were compiled by some out-of-work peeps in Farmers Branch, so it is unscientific, but they seemed happy to drink the beer while they crunched the nombers.

The we have been drafting well lately is a complete myth.

The 2011 draft, which was Jason's first draft, those guys have now been in the league 3 years and should be forming our nucleus. Let's see who those guys are in order

Tyron Smith- should be a solid starter for years to come. Good pick
Bruce Carter- had one good season and regressed big time. And he flat out quit against SD and NO. No idea what he will be.
Murray- good when he can stay on the field but you can't count on him to do that.
Arkin- Not even on the team anymore. Waste of pick
Josh Thomas- Who??? Not even on the team anymore
Dwayne Harris- solid special teams guy. Good find late in the draft,
Shaun Chapas- Who??? Some lame FB who is on his 3rd team in 3 years
Bill Nagy- Not even with the team anymore.

4 of those 8 are not even here. 1 is very injury prone and now 1 of them regressed so bad he was benched last year. And he quit twice.

You want to know why our depth is bad?. Because those late round picks after about round 3 are always putrid for us. Other teams who are successful find depth and gems down there. Ours are throwaway. But everyone is so focused on the one or 2 guys we do get that are good and forget there are about 6 other picks.

Let's look at 2010 for giggles. These guys are now should start becoming vets and finishing up their rookie contracts: Let's see where this class is at:

Dez Bryant- solid pick. Can't argue this one.
Sean Lee- Good player. But only plays half the season. Missed the last portion of the past 2 years when we needed him. Plays recklessly. Can't contribute in the tub as they say
Owsu-Ansah- Horrible pick. Played with 6 teams in 4 years. Actually played here 2 different stints.
Sam Young- Who??? OT from Notre Dame. Only lasted one season here.
Jamar Wall- Who??? DB from TTech. On his 5th team in 4 years.
Sean Lissemore- Not here anymore.

So that leaves us with 2 of 6 that are still here. And one of those you can't even count on. Horrible draft.

Let's look at 2012. 2 seasons in. These guys should be rounding into form ready to start filling our nucleus:

Claiborne- So far, very underwhelming. Heard every excuse in the book. But he has been pretty bad. And we gave up our 2nd.
Crawford- Been hurt this whole time. Who knows what we have.
Wilber- LB. Got a little better as the season went on but is playing out of position.
Matt Johnson- worthless. He can't even stay healthy long enough for training camp.
Danny Coale- Waste of pick. Not even on the team
James Hanna- Seems like another worthless TE we draft and never use. Yawn.
Caleb McSurdy- Practice squad LB. Will never play.

Those are some of the most underwhelming evaluations I have seen, even around here.

i'm as optimistic as anyone. but lets look at what we are replacing. not upgrades but just the players we are replacing. how many rookie dt's get 11 sacks? none is the answer. so you need two dt's just to replace the production of hatcher. the real key is draft well and pray ware returns to form because just replacing the sacks from hatcher is not enough to fix this defense and doing that is a very tall order in itself

Draft or acquire though FA for the trenches on both sides of the ball, a good O and D line will do wonders for the back 7 and QB.

I think that health and a good draft get us into the playoffs...if the OL can stay together and keep tony on his feet, then the offense will do well enough win most games...the D? a healthy DLine that includes Crawford and Bass in the rotation along with a cheaper Ware, maybe spencer and two rookies in the rotation...makes the back 7 much better once they can get pressure on the QB....

Anything's possible for any team going into the draft. Could we find 5-6 starters next year who fill our holes? Yes.

But this is Jerry Jones we're talking about here. I don't even have confidence that he can identify our holes, much less find a handful of guys who fill them. If we end up picking tight ends and ignoring the DL again, then we're not going to be markedly better.

When Jerry looks in the mirror, he sees a huge "hole"
Of what nature I cannot say for fear of violating rules but it begins with an "A"

It is that and then the jumbled convoluted mess that erupts once the draft starts.

Barry Switzer, the Ivy League head coach, Larry Lacewell, the current DC at the time, the janitor, Charlotte, Spaulding Jones, everyone has his ear.

The man is trying though.

The question isn't will WE be better. EVERY team hopes and thinks it will be better after the draft. The real question is: will we be better relative to other teams? Isn't that really the measuring stick? By that standard, if anyone believes we will be better than the other teams (say those in our division), on what do you base that optimism?
