How much cap trouble can this team be in come 2015

Well when I said a 3 year deal I meant guaranteed money wise, if it makes him feel better you could pad the years to 7 years but only guarantee the first 3... He's going to be 30 next year no one is going to give him a ton of years of guaranteed money, I don't think

If he has another double digit sack season this year, you better bet that he'll get his payday...

you keep trying to ignore all the underlying situations. The New CBA is pouring a lot of money into benefits that people were expecting to go to the cap. The only reason the cap went up at all last year was the money Mara stole from us and the skins. Andrew Brandt, who was with the Packers front office for years appears every Wednesday on Sirius NFL channel at around 630 EST. He talks about this every now and then. He has been dead right on the Cap the last couple of years and he is thinking it will not go up more than 2-3 million next year and MAYBE 5 million in 2015.

You answered your own question. If the cap goes up 3m next year and 5m in 2015 that's 8m more than this year. Which puts it around 131m. Add any rollover and its more like 134-136m. That's a significant upgrade over the 120m we are at this year. No one is talking about 10s of millions every year, but a 3% increase annually is substantial over time.

That is at MOST. Much more likely less. And there is a good chance it will only rise slightly the next couple of years after that. The good news is that the concussion settlement is not going to affect the cap - that is coming out of the owners pockets.

the tv contract goes from 20.4 billion to 39.6 billion in 2014 thru 2022. with that much jump i think the cap will go up more than 5 million. just raw numbers thats 85 million per year, per team. all of that won't count toward the cap obviously but i suspect a lager portion than 5 million will. but i have no clue how the money is passed out and what actually counts as revenue. just seems like too big of a jump in revenue not to have more applied to the cap.

3 million+

is that per season!?

He shouldn't approach that number, as of right now, he's only average on kick offs, and while he's deadly under 49 yards, he's only average from 50 yards or more out. Plus most of the highest paid kickers have years of consistency under their belt, not guys just off their rookie deals.

One of the young up and coming kickers in the league... he is going to command top dollar. Top 5 kicker money. Ignore the reality if you want.

In reality this team should be in pretty good cap space. They will get that 5 million back this year from the cap penalty roll over the other 8 mill that's left this year and you won't be franchising Spencer again so that's 10 million and I expect either a restructure or cut for Austin and Rat to be gone as well. So really I don't think this team is really bad off.

If anything he proves how easy good kickers are to come by. I wouldn't give any kicker big money.

But to also add a couple pieces of need while keeping the guys that need to be resigned?

Every year's new contracts are set up with all that in mind. Now, obviously some players don't play up to their contract and others suffer injuries that take them out of the picture earlier than expected, but there's really no reason to worry about the future unless the owners decide to change all the ways the cap can be manipulated.

Look at this year, for instance, despite the cap penalty Dallas had to absorb, it still has money to play with if it so chooses. Now, you still have to be smart with that money, such as with the way Dallas approached the Waters situation, but the Cowboys have shown that they can create money to spend without letting the pieces they want go unless those players' demands do not equal their value (and Dallas is usually willing to pay at or just above value).

Spencer Walks, Dallas re-signs Hatcher.

Why in the heck would Spencer accept a 3 year deal from the team who has franchised him the past two years?

Hatcher could be back next year but I wouldn't be surprised if he walks.

Hatcher is a goner next year. Bass is going to make him expendable. He's going to want to cash in for his last contract and I suspect he'll get a decent deal somewhere else (New Orleans, anyone?)

Dallas has much bigger fish to fry in the future than Hatcher and they'll let him walk. The dude is too old for a J. Ratliff type of deal and he just may get one next season. I just hope it's not in Dallas.

Are you talking about Jason Hatcher?

Jerry Jones will not let cap space be the reason that Bruce Carter and the Boys part ways. Carter will stay.

I thin Carter is a very good player, don't get me wrong, but there is less of a premium on LBs in the 43.

Lets compare this team to the Bears. If Lee is our Urlacher, Carter is Briggs. I'm keeping Urlacher 100% of the time, so if we are in cap trouble, it makes more sense to sign other premium positions, like LT, before OLB. If we can afford to keep Carter, I would love to, but if Holloman, or someone else, steps up, then we can get away with letting Carter go.

Expendable might not have been the right word...

Carter will be better than Briggs

I think Lee's friendly contract sets the bar for what Carter would ask for. Unless he has some sort of break out year, I don't anticipate us giving him that kind of money.

As far as Dez goes, I believe he'll seek a contract that is in the top 3 range for WR. Im not sure we can afford him. I hope he gives us a discount and stays with us.

On to Murray. I know he has a lot of support from everyone, IMO he has to prove he can be healthy and with generation RB's don't have as much value as far as contracts go. The life of a RB is short in the NFL. Therefore, if we were to manage to resign Murray, I don't see us having to break the bank for him.

People are actually worried about Dez Bryant leaving?

Never happen. The only way he plays somewhere else is if he screws up off the field and the Cowboys decide to move on.
