How Should the Cowboys Handle 2nd Round Picks in the Future?

Did you see the contract he got with the Dolphins?

I did. They saw something in him that was not here when he played here. Cowboys gave up on him. Also, just because another team gives a former player from here or from any other prior team a big contract, really means nothing except they are willing to take the risk. I am glade the Cowboys passed on him.

That’s not how it works though. You don’t give someone a big deal if they sucked lol.

They coulda just called me on most of them & had much more success. I lean more toward BPA in second round, they lean more toward reclamation projects or reaching for need.

But you do know a lot of BPAs have flopped for teams? What happened to all those guys like Chaisson, Noah Spence, Shariff Floyd…..there’s been a long list of guys I’ve seen fans covet…..

Oh sure, but I wasn't on those guys bandwagon.

Nobody is going to hit them all .... but they have really made a lot of questionable choices

No such thing as BPA. That's strictly a fan thing.

gotta disagree. you generally have a pretty good idea who has proven themselves on the field versus the ones who have risen up the boards due to projection.

You really don't. There are always several players at every draft spot who are close. There's almost never a clear BPA.

No team drafts BPA before the 4th round, it's foolish. You take good players that hopefully fill a need. Just taking players willynilly is a good way to mediocrity.

a lot of really successful clubs take players at positions they seem to be set at because they believe the player is best available. better to have two Maserati's than 1 & a honda civic. lot of teams regret passing on Parson's for a "position" right?

I've stopped responding to Schoonmaker posts. I'm all for people wanting other guys but it's how they go about it. Straight creating lies. The Cowboys did not reach for him according to their board I don't know why people don't understand that lol.
You think people shouldn’t criticize a teams board?

That’s definitely an interesting opinion.

Connor Williams was hardly a solid contributor. IMO
He started 51 games for mostly strong Dallas offenses and 17 more for a good Miami offense last year. If that's not a solid contributor at the very least, I don't know what is. See my point about overinflated expectations.

That is just incredibly not true.

This is not really a poll, I just wanted to read what others think.

2nd round picks have been somewhat problematic for the Jerry Jones era for the last 25 years. Gambles, fliers, and reaches on character and/or injury problem players.

The philosophy needs to change.

I'd just go B.P.A. from now on. Makes things much easier.

Heck, I'd be open to trades of 2nd round picks as a common practice.

The Wild-catter approach has bitten us in the butt too many times.
Who determines who is best player available?

I mean I can live with most of them but it’s hard to stomach Trysten Hill, Joseph and Schoonmaker. I was all behind Gregory not gonna lie.

Have a stricter policy on what character concerns can be worked with and what cannot be worked with.

Place a greater emphasis on intelligence.

Lock Jerry and Stephen out of the war room.

Remember, when you think that you are getting a bargain in the second round, there's a real reason why the player is available, and that reason is generally not good.
Agree, but the problem is they would be the only team to have this policy. By this thinking Carter shouldn't have gone top 10 in the draft, but here we are. Falling grades due to off field issues, injuries, etc make an otherwise top 5 player so tempting to grab in the 2nd round and this will never change

You apparently don't spend much time studying the draft.

Ask any team about drafting using BPA and they'll look at you like an alien. It's not a strategy. It's simply something fans love to scream when they don't understand the draft process.
