How Should the Cowboys Handle 2nd Round Picks in the Future?

I mean I can live with most of them but it’s hard to stomach Trysten Hill, Joseph and Schoonmaker. I was all behind Gregory not gonna lie.
Yeah, it was just not feasible to me to believe that ganja could ruin a dude's career. And he still sucked when they let him toke. Hmmmmmm......

Lol, it’s 100% true. What’s more by the 2nd round you could ask 32 GMs at a specific spot and get 32 different answers!
It's actually quite obvious, but people have brainwashed themselves into believing in it. Very strange occurrence.

a lot of really successful clubs take players at positions they seem to be set at because they believe the player is best available. better to have two Maserati's than 1 & a honda civic. lot of teams regret passing on Parson's for a "position" right?
They really don't. They take that player due to needing a replacement instead of overpaying him, mostly.

Parsons was passed on strictly due to him sitting out his last year in college. If he'd have played, top 5 easy. And it wasn't his fault, they cancelled their season, so he took money, and then the reinstated the season. It was too late for him.

I don't know what others saw. Connor was the weak link. If the Cowboy's thought he had a future here, as a second round pick, no way would they let that penalty Tunstall go.
Yah he was a JAG guard.

He started 51 games for mostly strong Dallas offenses and 17 more for a good Miami offense last year. If that's not a solid contributor at the very least, I don't know what is. See my point about overinflated expectations.
He was JAG. I don't know what some of you were watching when he was here. He was the weak link on the offense. Why did the Cowboy's let him go???

certainly giving yourself options so you aren't held hostage is an advantage of BPA but they would have taken a position they clearly needed if they were only looking at strengthening their current roster.

49ers & Ravens are two teams that jump to mind who let best players fall to them due to other teams picking for need and they don't care if it's not a position of need. They know you can work from a position of strength while finding ways to round out your roster.

We don't have to agree. Neither is done exclusively but I believe early rounds you need to take best players you can find. Later it is hard to have clear cut BPA.

I can't believe anyone thinks Connor Williams was a "very good player for us".

He was clearly a weak link the entire time he was here. He wasn't a fit at T or G. Our coaches couldn't get his center play up to par.

Miami moved him to center and things started off pretty good last year. As I recall (could be wrong), his play wasn't as great as the season progressed. Not saying he was terrible but the dolphins wouldn't work with him on a contract revision during the off season.

All in all, for me, a fringe starter that is best as a backup you are looking to move on from at the first opportunity.

Trade up into the top of second rounds or the bottom of the 1st and get richer finds then.

I've stopped responding to Schoonmaker posts. I'm all for people wanting other guys but it's how they go about it. Straight creating lies. The Cowboys did not reach for him according to their board I don't know why people don't understand that lol.
We have a strong nucleus for a very strong tight end group now...and Stephens coming back next season. Strength.

We might as well use it to trade up or trade it away for a useful player

With the exception of Diggs, almost all of our second rounders have had some kind of issue. Sean Lee was an excellent player but out a ton. Sam William looked great but now he's in trouble. Jaylon Smith had a great year with LVE and then he's clear eye viewing on another team.

The only thing I can think of is... he started for us another team resigned him..so he must have been good. LOL. I can't think of any logical reason to say he played well here.

Lots of good info here. it's a little slow updating after the season is over, but they eventually get there before the start of the next season.

This settles a lot of poor memories about who, what, when, where, and how.

Even in the first! I thought Gibbs would go around to a little after our pick. Lions took him at 12… how many GMs had him at 12?

This is not really a poll, I just wanted to read what others think.

2nd round picks have been somewhat problematic for the Jerry Jones era for the last 25 years. Gambles, fliers, and reaches on character and/or injury problem players.

The philosophy needs to change.

I'd just go B.P.A. from now on. Makes things much easier.

Heck, I'd be open to trades of 2nd round picks as a common practice.

The Wild-catter approach has bitten us in the butt too many times.
Well we only draft gypsies, tramps and thieves in the second round.....

He started 51 games for us and people think he was a bust of a 2nd-round draft pick. Is he great? No. Is he an above-average starter? Probably not. But he’s an adequate starter in the league. Two teams with good offenses have thought so. That is a much better-than-average outcome for a second-round pick.

See, again, my point about overinflated expectations.
