How Should the Cowboys Handle 2nd Round Picks in the Future?

I'm thinking trading our second picks may be a good idea. Use them to trade up (Mark Holmes' idea) to the first round. Or, trade back to add more picks. Or, we can use them to get players that we need.
Just trade up in the 2nd and get whomever you want. If you have to part with a 3rd or 4th so be it. Waiting around and reaching isnt working.

Does everyone realize that they were choosing between Sam Williams & Jalen Tolbert at that pick?

Or Demarvin Leal. Or Christian Harris.

Honestly, if those two were the only two we had on our charts, we desperately need a different chart maker.

No, we were told who they were choosing between. They hoped that Tolbert would make it to the 3rd. Many of the local media guys thought they should have taken Tolbert and that Sam had a better chance to make to the 3rd.

Doesn't seem to matter. We took Jaylon Smith early in round 2. Our FO is better at drafting in rounds 1 and 3 than round 2.

they use 2nd round picks to adress needs

issue is theyve been hit or miss

You get Diggs..you get Joseph
You get Jaylon being great then you get Jaylon being terrible

This is not really a poll, I just wanted to read what others think.

2nd round picks have been somewhat problematic for the Jerry Jones era for the last 25 years. Gambles, fliers, and reaches on character and/or injury problem players.

The philosophy needs to change.

I'd just go B.P.A. from now on. Makes things much easier.

Heck, I'd be open to trades of 2nd round picks as a common practice.

The Wild-catter approach has bitten us in the butt too many times.
What if Sam Williams has an outstanding year and the Cowboys win the Super Bowl?

DLaw- great pick, regardless of round
RG- didn't see any real action till 2 or 3 seasons in the NFL due to suspensions, had one good solid year for us, then took the money and disappeared in Denver.
Jaylon- red shirt first year, had a great season then average. Good guy but bad injury
Chido- good pick, solid pick
Conner- good pick, good use of a 2nd rounder
Trevon- great pick, no argument he is a great pick, first round talent snagged in the 2nd round.
Kelvin and Sam Williams- jury is still out but both have put themselves in a position that the nfl could suspend them.

So with that sample size with 2nd rounders it's not as bad as advertised as far as contributing on the field. I would argue 5-3, which isn't bad. The only frustrating part is the players that missed time for either suspension or injuries we knew prior to drafting them that it could happen. I don't know two many teams that would use a premium pick on a guy with serious injury issues or a pattern of bad behavior. We do for some reason and it gives us headaches.
I agree.. I don’t have the time to do it but I wish someone would compare our success rate of the second round in comparison to other teams….

Connor Williams was 100% NOT good value in the 2nd round. He basically sucked for 3 years and was still the weak link on the line in year #4.

Interesting that he played well in Miami as a Center, but its only 1 year. Connor couldnt even snap the ball when he was here.
I don't know what others saw. Connor was the weak link. If the Cowboy's thought he had a future here, as a second round pick, no way would they let that penalty Tunstall go.

While I can’t argue that 2nd round picks haven’t been problematic for us- I think the cowboys overall have done well when it comes to the draft. They’ve had some success in other rounds and done well in the first. Overall things seems to even out. While perhaps they need to be a little more cautious with character red flags I think they have a good handle on the draft overall so it’s not a huge concern to me Imo.

I think that's the issue with the 2nd round. The best talent is typically guys who fell for some reason. Whether it's injury concerns, behavioral.....otherwise they would've been 1st round picks.
No issues with your post at all. I think there have been many boring, solid singles or doubles they could hit in 2nd round. I think sometimes they try to hit homers and outsmart the rest.
