How the Cowboys front office is trying to cheat the system to help them get over the hump

To characterize the Cowboys approach as “cheating the system” is ridiculous. They are working within the system. There is no cheating going on.

It is just how the Cowboys approach contracts. You can argue about the effectiveness of their approach. But it isn’t “cheating.”

Dallas is in tough spot since anybody that's half-ways decent on this team is hyped into the stratosphere and demands top dollar. Add to that the nature of "market setting" in the NFL (ie every time some franchise with tons of cap space and not enough star players goes out and overpays someone that's the new "market value") and you find yourself struggling to meet the cap.

Disagree with the comments about the Jones sitting helplessly by while the team underperforms.

They hire the wrong soft coaching that leads directly to the poor performance on the field as well as creating a soft as Charmin culture.

They are directly responsible for the crapfest that's been the last 28 season's since our last NFCCG.
Have a great season, cowboy brother

It’s one thing to overpay and be cheap. It’s another to overpay a loser like Dak who folds like a cheap wet suit.

I think Dan Roger’s is arguably the biggest cowboys homer in terms of writing and or semi reporting and that’s saying a lot

You don't truly realize the real price for doing business, not even on a holiday and with things getting cheaper to celebrate.

Simply put, you are always crying and not figuring anything out but losing.

I give Dan Rogers credit. He tries to explain why the Cowboys FO operates the way they do and does a decent job.

There is a method to the madness of the Cowboys penny-pinching ways.

As we come down to another contract deadline, the Dallas Cowboys continue to find themselves in another financial standoff with a star player. It’s become such a common thing for this organization and it’s been all anyone’s talking about over the summer. This is the way the front office works. It’s beyond frustrating for fans and it’s a never-ending supply of storylines for the media. This is the Cowboys' way.

The difficult thing to understand about all this is why the front office chooses to operate in this manner.

For years, the Joneses have sat in their suite and watched helplessly as another high-expectation season comes crashing to a halt. They have no control over how the players perform in those games or how the coaches coach. All they can do is provide the best possible roster. And while many disagree with their approach, the front office continues to look for an edge, and like it or not, this remains the Cowboys' way.

How exactly is this cheating the system to get over the hump by making star players take less than market on their deals?

1st.........I dont see star players taking less money nowadays, Lamb sure didnt, Dak dam sure is not, and Parson aint either. These dudes want to be the highest paid or dam near close, that is not a hometown discount.

2nd.......How is it a competitive advantage if you did save any money if you are not going to use that extra money in free agency, so its all a moot point.

3rd........This strategy is not getting them over the hump, they still lose in the first round dam near every year. So how is this "method to their madness" providing any tangible results?

Maybe I just missed something here.

How did they not lose money by paying Lamb "market value" when the market was set in less than 2 months with 2 major contracts???? Same thing happened when they waited out Dak's first contract when most people said they should've paid him early on. Dallas has a history of waiting and overpaying. When did Jerruh ever "win" in a major contract negotiation? They're always on the wrong side.

Here is one flaw in the Dallas system that no one is talking about.........players age. And by the time they pay that big money......these guys are past their prime.....and they are paying for dwindling returns.

This upcoming Prescott deal is a prime example.....If they cave into that.....this franchise is absolutely screwed for the next 5-7 years. Your pinning your hopes on a broken down fighter....and painting yourself into a corner financially.

Did you even read the article?
Since Dallas was created in 1960 and all the changes from there, through Jerry Jones...the basis for success and role between team and fan has been the same,

First the seed of need had to be planted for success.

Next expecting a miracle had to be believed...here and now.

The road is then based upon maintaining faith, planting seeds, and keeping the faith. Yea, expecting an unforeseen miracle.

Not crying...always working and in the now. Give a full love into the team.

The big glaring issue with this strategy is no one is ever going to give them the big discounts they want. If they want to implement this it needs to be cultural. Start trying to sign them early, if they don’t play ball trade them on their rookie deal, when they’re probably the most valuable. Ceedee would’ve been the perfect 1st example cause WR is fairly easy to replace.

Let me make sure I understand your position. Try to pay your best players, if they don't allow you to, get rid of them for draft picks I suppose? Sit out free agency? What kind of team would you have? A team with 3 or 4 year players at all times?

I don't understand why Jerry thinks a player wants to play for less than his market value. Jerry, more so than any other owner, understands this is a business FIRST. When the same person (Jerry) has been doing it his way for so long, without the results he is looking for, what makes him think he is the most qualified to do this? I am of the belief that the 3 Super Bowls Jerry has won as the owner, are mainly because of Jimmy. That is the ONLY formula that has worked for Jerry. He should return to being the OWNER and bring in an architect that gives us the best chance of getting to the next level.

Jerry has NEVER gotten to the next level with the role he is in now, and he has had more chances than any other GM in the history of the sport. It takes everything in my being to keep my fandom in perspective, because it is mind boggling to me why I and so many of you and so many of my family/friends still care, when this man REFUSES to turn this over to competent professionals!

That approach would be akin to walking into a Casino and declaring, this person not winning is just stupid.

Yeah. It is always good ole fashion fun... until the old fish-eyed fool taunts start a-flying.
Many many years ago, I printed Aunt Esters head off the internet. Cut out the image and place over the face of my boss's wife on the family picture he kept on his desk......dude came unglued.

They still haven't solved that one to this day

Just a question but isn't there something inherently stupid about people betting in a place where only 13% actually wind up winning money?
