That's a fact. And, back then, salaries weren't as high. A player made pretty good money (as compared to pumping gas) but it wasn't enough to support them during the whole offseason. Many players had other jobs during the off season. If you made $5000/year in football and $2000 year in the off season selling insurance...then that speech would motivate you.
Things have changed, which is not always good.
