How to fix their anemic pass rush?

We already dont run enough plays for Williams to rush the passer.
This doesn't make sense.

Passrush opportunities are largely defined by the offense. There's no scheme you can run in which the DT doesn't get doubled if the offense chooses not to allow it.

Question is, would he move the needle enough?
Enough maybe not, the most out of what’s available likely so.

If he can get me 7-8 sacks in 12 games and bumps everyone down in the pass rush rotation to where they don’t need to be the main guys I’m happy.

We just need a pulse there, just average sack production as a unit would be a big step up to what they’re on pace for.

We just have to hope that the current pass rushers get better ......... there is no one coming to bail us out of this.

Outside of Maxx Crosby there aren't any truly pass rushers available, with the Raiders early success, he is most likely off the block. Could be the reason why Cowboys management pivoted in acquiring the high-end press corner. They still could add a mid-level type like a Josh Sweat, but probably would have to overpay. Point is, they isn't an elite edge rusher coming to save this defense.

As I mentioned, in another post Mike Pettine has worked with CP in the past while both of them in Green Bay. Matter of fact the Cowboys tried to hire him as a consultant onto CP's staff. His last stop was with the Vikings under Brain Flores, but he also was Rex Ryan's DC with the Jets:

Jets designed a defense around Darrell Revis with an average pass rush. They used a ton of simulated pressures. Not saying Porter is on the level as Revis, nor has to be, but this can work to generate more pressure and force the ball out more quickly.
I think some of y'all really keep acting like we have a 43 and have a 34 defense you don't need a defensive end pass rusher like you're talking about you need a better outside linebacker They're talking about Khalil Mack could be a guy who is available maybe less expensive than other guys.

I say no to another acquisition, CP do your job!!

but I say start in house you need to play Von Miller more Use the rookie and Eazy E, A little less I know you're going to say progress stopper and I'm saying, no it's not ,and use James Houston more, and change Overshown temporarily see how he responds to playing outside linebacker..

I really believe Agent Zero could play that position better than the other two young guys I really do Why not it keeps Winters and Barham where they're at no changes You just give my idea above plus overshown I think that it can help he has all 10 days after this next game to get acclimated in practice to playing outside linebacker..

This year I think the only option is to blitz more. Once they get Porter integrated into the defense and the Safeties return from injury, maybe some more blitzes from safeties and LBs would help. At some point they need to get more pressure. The Vikings are having success blitzing 70% of the time. I might not go that high but I would go higher than the 27% Dallas blitzes.

I believe Crosby was never in play at all.
Hence the Cowboys' lower offer than the Raiders' asking price.
But if they bit on the offer, then they would feel they got a good deal.

And agree, he is probably off the table now. Unless a team is willing to give up those 2 - 1st round picks. And probably none are.

Some analysts said about JPJ while in Pittsburgh. He is the type of player you can build a defense around. So you are onto something there.
He'd be in play if things were going our way. If they were 0-4 would Vegas listen to offers

Its different when hes lined up as a 3-4 end controlling 2 gaps to hold the line of scrimmage then as a 3tech in a single gap trying to immediately penetrate the backfield which hes best suited for. Different responsibilities. Hes talented enough to do both but i would like to see him tasked to penetrate as a 3tech more then he has currently been doing.

Might as well check the Steelers roster and their pass rushers the way it's been going recently lol
How much does TJ Watt cost? We keep talking about Highsmith, but Watt is still an impact player from what I've seen.

Would we be willing to give up the other 1st rd pick? Would that get it done?

If so... that's pretty tempting

right now the players are all over the place, I can't tell you how many times I have seen them to be in the wrong place and or get cooked.
add the injury issues in the secondary and it makes it bad.
I didn't expect us to be great, or good, but I didn't expect us to be this bad. this is year 3 and running that we have inept bottom feeding defense. how could that be? three years of drafting and FAs and we still suck real bad. I mean really bad. lets not forget the texans OL is pretty bad.

the LBs and secondary look lost. they are often caught flat footed (except for braham) ....somebody always gets open. the DL is not in sync with the back 7. the DEs can't generate pressure and can't tackle when they get there. how many times did the QB escape and extend plays.
part of the problem was run defense, which seemingly got better, but probably because teams are choosing to attack us in the air, rather than on the ground. although ravens had their way with us both ways, so did the giants kind of (perhaps even washington, although they didn't convert to scores).

run defense was seemingly better this past game, but secondary is so devastated, it didn't make a difference. how could recievers be so open all the time. nobody knew their assignment and some of them are just over matched. I saw steward get cooked a couple of times really bad, if not more.

we have to continue to be better at run defense. then put the other team in obvious passing situations, get our injured secondary back on the field and lets see how the pass rush is. just throwing another name at it is not going to fix the problem.

I also think the scheme needs tweaking. Q has been better in collapsing the pocket, as he is seemingly lining up or choosing a gap to attack and just gets after it. instad of standing up, diagnosing the play and then making a move, he is just attacking and that's what he is good at.

It is just as much the scheme as it is the players.

A hybrid 3-4 is not a 3-4 defense but they should incorporate a few fundamentals. It could benefit them. However, in order to do that, they would need legitimate LBs and not converted EDGEs.

EZE is not a LB. Rashan Gary did not truly emerge in Green Bay until they switched back to the 4-3 and made him a DE.

These former EDGEs and other like them lack the versatility to perform as complete LBs. There are times when a LB should be called upon for pass coverage. Both their own coaches and the opponent coaches realize this isn't going to happen.

Therefore, they will be used to pass rush in most cases and the opponent will know this.

This effectively eliminates one of the most important advantages of a 3-4 defense which is the direction of the 4th pass rusher. In a traditional 3-4, the identity of the 4th pass-rusher is unknown. He could come from anywhere, a LB, a safety, even a CB. This confuses the opponent O-line by creating a degree of doubt.

It is far easier when they know who the pass-rushers are and this eliminates a key advantage of a 3-4. If Rashan Gary is on the field during an obvious pass play, the Cowboys could put him at safety and it wouldn't change the opponent's blocking assignments.

The Cowboys must diversify their 4-man pass rush in the same way as a traditional 3-4. Their 3-man front is talented but must stay conservative in their lanes. Again, knowing the identity of the 4th pass rusher give the O-line the advantage.

I think EZE is now in the unfortunate position of playing on a defense that is not compatible with his skill set. Rashan Gary is also better suited for a 4-3 defense but they could try him at DE where he would still be considered smallish.

Trading for an elite 4-3 pass-rusher is not going to solve the issue and would probably just create more of them.

I have to question some principles of Parker's defense when it claims to be an innovation of the 3-4. They need the right kind of LB with the right kind of skillset. Parcells knew this and always stated that you could never have too many good LBs. How many do the Cowboys actually have?

In the end, it will take some personnel changes for this defense to become elite. Considering the draft capital available over the next few seasons, this will be another challenge.

New name to consider, Khalil Mack.

Chargers are done and the Cowboys can afford him. Has 3 sacks this season and is a proven pass rusher despite his age. As a rental for 12-13 games or so he’d be a great addition.
Isn't this what Von Miller was supposed to be????

Justin Houston was our best pass rusher in the pre season....so let's just make him inactive every game.

What the heck is simulated pressures?

That's the part I don't understand...Why is Houston on the bench? He's better than Lawrence and EZe right now. SMDH.
