Hue Jackson: Browns need 'to go get' QB with No. 2 pick in draft

TAMPA, Fla. -- It's been less than a week since the Cleveland Browns announced the hiring of Hue Jackson, but the new head coach is already talking about a draft that is more than 100 days from solving the team's most glaring need.

That the Browns would take a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft would not be surprising; NFL Media analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks both have Cleveland taking one in their first 2016 mock drafts that will be published Monday (that's called a tease).
What is a bit surprising, however, is Jackson being so candid about the Browns' draft plans in just his first week on the job. The draft process for most team general managers and coaches starts this coming week at the East-West Shrine Game practices.

I don't think its any surprise. Maybe a little surprising to hear right now. The question has always been who they would take. I'm still not convinced they take Goff. Scouts love big time tools and Lynch and Wentz ooze this. Coaches think they can get the most out of those tools by nature. Lynch seems to falling now, but we need to wait until pro days are completed before really knowing how close these guys will be.

Basically JFB ends up here, and the best QB goes off the board at 2 unless somebody trades up to 1.

Lynch would be a better pick for them

I'm excited to see who teams think the top QB is.

I still have Goff a little ahead of Wentz but it's not going to take much more for me to put him ahead of Goff.

The upside with Wentz is enormous.

I lean that way as well. Bigger arm in a cold climate, outdoor stadium. Also a bigger guy to deal with the tough, hard nose defenses in that division. He also has as much upside as any QB since Luck. Before the bowl games were played Lynch was the top QB for most people. Now that one game has changed a lot of peoples mind, or at least it seems that way.

Its always hard to pinpoint things this early. Bridgewater was looked at as a top 5-10 guy at one point around this same time and look where he went. Bortles was mid-late 1st at this time. I prefer to wait until the pro days are over before assuming too much.

There is no true slam dunk QB in this draft. Taking one in top 5 is disaster for any team, none will be able to start day one. Or even year two. More power to the Browns IMO.

Somehow I think Manziel stays and the still draft a guy. I dont think the FO will let him go for less then a 3rd and I dont think given the talk that they are moving on anyone will give up more then a 5th. I think they will hold him for one more year and hedge their bets

Jackson should have kept his mouth shut

Jackson said he would only take the job if they dropped JFB (not sure what they see in Jackson, never been impressed by him). Also I doubt there is much of a market for him except here and maybe Houston. I doubt they could give him away.

No offense to you but I'm just sick of the Wentz hype. It's becoming ridiculous and we haven't even reached the combine. By the time that comes around we're gonna be hearing how Wentz is Cam Newton with a little bit of Tom Brady in him.
Like I said no offense to you, this comment just forced me to express my opinion on the Wentz hype.

I like them both but I am more leaning to Goff since he has played against better competition. Also he is 2 years younger than Wentz and I wool plan to sit both of them for the next 2-3 years. Barring any injuries Goff would be 24 and our qb for the next 13 years. I would not mind either though.

There is a lot of hype on Wentz right now, we will see soon how much is warranted as the evaluation process moves along.

The hype machine may very well continue but at least Dallas will know everything they need to know about Wentz by the end of this month.

These QB's will be analyzed to death in the coming months and all the substantive concerns will be discussed ad nauseam.

The real question is not how we as fans evaluate these QB's personally, it is how the Cowboy scouts and coaches evaluate these players and to what extent Jerry actually listens.

Cleveland is the biggest wild card in the draft. I don't think it's a slam dunk that they'd go QB at #2 especially since there's not a slam-dunk talent like Luck, Newton, etc. on the board.

The problem is that in looking at the college landscape, I'm not seeing a generational QB prospect in the wings either. That doesn't mean that somebody can't be a great player, but if you're waiting for a QB, prepare to be disappointed.

My gut tells me they still take Goff or Lynch at #2 and just go for it. This regime can't afford to wait three years as Jimmy Haslam has the patience of Joffrey from GoT.

As more prudent heads then I have said let the process play out.
By the time the draft rolls around we should all have a better picture
of the top three QBs. Like many have said there really may not be
a QB rated high enough to take at #4. I hope thats not the case.
I cant stand another wandering through the Quarter Back-less desert
again for another decade. am pimpin Wentz but my street corner is for sell.

If I'm a GM in need of a QB, I start spreading rumors of trading for the #1 pick. If the Browns bite and end up trading up one spot, I'll laugh my @$$ off.

And if HJ's comments about JFB is true, well that's just inexcusable.

He's off to a great start.
