In lieu of this thread - http://cowboyszone.com/threads/stee...nts-to-trade-down-in-this-draft.285958/unread - I think the cards are falling into play as I predicted for us to be able to trade up for Clowney, of course it won't be cheap. So say he is on the board at #5, a hard assumption but not entirely ludicrous, given the value of late draft picks in this draft we should be able to get that pick from Oakland for our 2nd, 4th, 6th and next years 1st. Finally, imagine Donald may be able to fall straight to 16 if the run on defensive line doesn't start until late. If he didn't we could likely hop in front of the Bears in order to ensure we land Donald for next years 4th and a 7th this year.

This would leave us with Clowney, Donald, a 3rd round pick, a 5th round pick, and 2 7ths... could be a truly great haul. Next year won't be excellent, but if Clowney and Donald are the players are all seem to think they are this is absolutely worth it.

Why would we trade up in one of the deepest drafts in the last couple of years? We need to stay put and draft solid players all the way out. Donald and Clowney are not going to make us contenders.

Um, it is entirely and completely ludicrous. Any trade moving up would include Dallas' first round choice. No if ands or buts.

Not sure why my comment would be considered "off the wall". I am just saying even if it was possible Donald and Clowney wouldn't make us contenders and would probably set us back a couple of years.

You'd need to package our first this year to move up, 2014 and 2015 1st rounders would probably be the cost for moving up for Clowney. Can't say I wouldn't think about doing that though, he's going to do dominate and you're not going to see another defensive player with his talent for years.

First off, I was just having a little fun.... I'm not one those high and mighty, hide behind my keyboard and bash everyone type of person... however, respectfully, if by some miracle we drafted both Donald and Clowney, then we would have the top rated player at DT and DE along with Melton which would make a glaring weakness become a strength... if by contenders, you mean playoffs, I believe that we would be in position to win the East....an example would be Carolina last year... they drafted two top DTs and had one of the very best defenses in the league and won their division... just another viewpoint... didn't intend to offend you.

To be clear, I don't believe there's any way to get both..... but if we did, it would help immediately... not set us back at all.

To clarify I'm not saying this is likely or even truly plausible, simply interesting. Would make our biggest weakness a huge strength.

I have never found something that was impossible to be very interesting. In fact, I have found the time spent thinking about the impossible to be a complete waste of time.

How about we trade for Demarcus Ware and sign Jarred Allen then trade up to draft Donald #1.

now, imagine that tony's back becomes an issue halfway through the season and we finish 5-10 or 4-12 with a top 5 pick (that someone else has) and no QB

I think it's more of a let me get my post count ticking thread.

Oh. You may be right. I do a lot more reading than I do posting, and I dont read alot of his initial post b/c he post on emotion rather than reason. Ex....I remember him saying Miles has a lot more upside than Dez. I knew what I was dealing with then!!! But to be fair, if everyone had the same mindset on a message board it would not be nearly as fun.

Beyond the fact that the Raiders are so far behind in the talent pool that they're going to want top tier players as opposed to pulling depth aside, trading away first round picks traditionally has terrible results. If Romo were to have a second back injury and miss significant time and need to be replaced I'd hate it if we weren't in position to grab a first round QB from there.
