MIAMI — As Hurricane Irma threatens to pound Miami with winds of mind-boggling power, a heavyweight hazard looms over the city’s skyline: two dozen enormous construction cranes.
The horizontal arms of the tall tower cranes, however, will remain loose despite the potential danger of collapse. According to city officials, they can’t be tied down or moved.
Many are questioning why the cranes can’t be moved, Miami officials said Tuesday in a tweet. “The answer — it’s a slow process that can take about TWO weeks and there is NOT enough time,” they said. “Consider that the counterbalances on tower cranes weigh about 20,000 to 30,000 pounds.”

I've got family and friends in the western side of the state who were lulled into a false sense of security by the earlier track predictions. They're now limited as to what they can do so it looks like they're going to try to ride it out. I'm afraid they're not in the minority and there might be a whole bunch of people in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area that are going to be at risk.

They will be fine, just hunker down and have supplies on hand. This one won't stall like Harvey. I have been through a couple this size, it isn't "too" bad as long as it keeps moving.

Yes, the average person here isn't prepared for 8 feet of water on their property. Neither is the average person in New Orleans, Houston, or Miami. So to say that Sandy wasn't a "big one" because of a category number is to ignore human tragedy that took place and the massive destruction that was caused.

I have to agree, we were hit hard by Dolly in 2008 and it wasn't a, so called big one.

You'll notice I said big one.

Your neck of the world was ill-prepared to deal with the types of storms that hit the Gulf states, probably because they don't deal with them that often.

Sandy was a cat 2 when it hit NY and NJ. If they'd been hit with a storm with power of Irma, they would have characterized it as the worst storm in the history of the world.

The worst hurricane is the one that hits in your backyard.

Down to a cat 3, but it may very well turn back into a Cat 4 before Florida landfall.

Definitely hearing the same about the west coast not being as prepared due to thinking the storm would impact the east coast more.

Very scary, I hope this storm continues to weaken.

Son is in evac zone a in st Pete. He is bugging out tomorrow before bridges close coming to our house. I told him we may lose our roof too but at least we won't drown. Hard headed. 12 ft storm surges aren't anything to mess with when you are 2 feet above sea level.

watching all the press conferences I have learned the hand sign for S Florida is to show the back of your left hand pointed down with the thumb extended and point to the bottom of hte hand. I find myself watching the signers more than listening to what hte governor says.

That is normal for islands during a storm. It goes out to be part of the surge and slowly comes back.

Weird. I lived on an island for 18 months and never heard that before. Even went through 2 hurricanes there.

It doesn't happen often, the conditions have to be just right but that is what occurred there. I weathered a storm in Turks once and happened in a marina. Was pretty cool seeing all the boats on dry land.
