Hypothetically we resign Dak, what's Lance's next move?

IMO a Prescott extension is very likely...almost a certain thing. Lance is a trade candidate if and only if he can displace Cooper Rush as QB2. Either Rush or Lance has to go. If Rush starts the season again as QB2 then Lance is finished here (cut) and perhaps done in the NFL. If Lance shines in the preseason and wins the QB2 guy then he would have some trade value.

Folks talking about Lance being the 2025 starter are "dreaming a little dream" IMO. Going from a distant number 3 in 2023 and a guy who never came close to challenging Rush for the QB2 spot to jumping not only Rush but Prescott by '25 is far fetched.

Not much trade value. A team that loses their starter to injury is not going to seek out an inexperienced quarterback to replace him. They will already have an inexperienced quarterback on their practice squad. And Lance is a free agent after the 2024 season. What would a team give up for an inexperienced quarterback rental for the balance of their season?

If you are Trance and what is holding you back is playing time. Why would you sign a new deal to compete as a back up?

Go play in another league and get some experience.
Wut? By that logic why do any 2nd and 3rd string QBs even exist? Why would he play in another league for a fraction of what he'll make as an NFL backup?

Good points. But if he does well in the pre season and shows potential and displaces Rush as the number 2 he could have some value. The Cowboys may be able to get something especially from teams without a true quality starter and looking for candidates to become their guy in seasons to come.

Whether the Cowboys resign Dak or not, Trey Lance is a commodity. Of course, his value is going to depend on his preseason performances

Really, after August, he will be worth anything from a couple of 1st round picks to absolutely nothing. The Cowboys would probably attempt to trade him before the end of his current contract.

I would love for him to look great in the preseason. However, what if he looks phenomenal? It may seem improbable but it's not impossible.

Watching Lance in preseason is the only thing that makes this season worth watching. All else is null and void with deer in the headlights under center.

So you have zero expectations about making a playoff run anytime in the next few years.

That's a good question, and a question I can't answer. I don't know how teams will think, or what Jerry might think. I would take it with a grain of salt. A lot of bad QBs and teams look good in preseason. Zach Wilson looked good in his rookie year preseason. Kenny Pickett looked good last year in preseason. It's still hard to tell how that translates into regular season.

Why is Love a fit for teams with good starting QBs but not backup QBs for other teams. That’s the same situation as Dallas but you don’t have him as a fit here
You mean Lance right?

The scenario was IF Dak re-signed long term.

Lance needs reps. He would not have many opportunities here if Dak is here for the foreseeable future

Right now Trey Lance is worthless. Before he is even worth another franchise’s look he’ll have to win a start. At least one. That is not likely to ever happen. He’ll seek free agency as he has nothing to lose.

We resign Dak during Camp or during the season, what is Trey Lance's thoughts or his next move????

1) He feels mislead and asks for a trade
2) He sucks it up and remains the backup and leaves the following season
3) He knows it was coming all the way long, but kept working hard on his craft to get better

I really need to sign up so I can do Poll topics!!!
he exceeds expectation in preseason games and we trade him for a 3rd at the deadline

Yeah I meant Dak. But some of those teams I said he was a fit for have long term starters - like Love.

He signs elsewhere.

He needs reps. I'm not sure he will be a good NFL QB or not, but he has to get meaningful playing time.
Meaningful playing time would be during the regular season and he won’t get that in Dallas unless he’s the backup and Dak gets injured. He may have a real tough go seeing the field again during the regular season regardless where he goes.
