Hypothetically we resign Dak, what's Lance's next move?

Yeah I meant Dak. But some of those teams I said he was a fit for have long term starters - like Love.
Also, in that scenario Love was hurt. NO team is trading anything for Lance this year unless they are desperate.

My argument for Green Bay acquiring him was that he can do some of the things Love does so you don't have to completely change the offense AND that Green Bay's current #2 (Sean Clifford) is not very good.

Again, the exercise was what teams might be a good fit for Lance (this year) if the Cowboys lock up Dak for the next several years.

If Dak doesn’t sign before the season, you keep Lance in case Dak gets hurt and they probably spend the whole year trying to sign Lance to an extension. Stephen only tries to negotiate with players with no other options. Once Lance and Dak hit the open market, Stephen is screwed.

If they resign Dak, Lance studies and works hard to get better, be ready for any opportunities to gain experience, and be patient and wait like so many other QBs have done. If he's got the stuff, his turn will come.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I have to say, some of you people are devoted to very bad arguments that have no solution.

Wut? By that logic why do any 2nd and 3rd string QBs even exist? Why would he play in another league for a fraction of what he'll make as an NFL backup?
They exists because they have excepted that role. Trance wants to start unless he has come back to reality.

We resign Dak during Camp or during the season, what is Trey Lance's thoughts or his next move????

1) He feels mislead and asks for a trade
2) He sucks it up and remains the backup and leaves the following season
3) He knows it was coming all the way long, but kept working hard on his craft to get better

I really need to sign up so I can do Poll topics!!!
The premise of the thread makes no sense to me. Resigning Dak during Camp or the season would be an unforced error. The timing is the question. I hear people say Dak has all the leverage but I can't entirely agree. The Cowboys don't have to decide on Dak this season. They have the luxury of time. Let Trey have the preseason games. Let Dak play the regular season out and then make their decision... Dak or Trey.

Trey's time in Dallas may never happen. If the Cowboys resign Dak, Trey is as good as gone. They won't resign him as well.

I’m not sure Lance has any moves to make.

He’s basically fighting for the backup position which since this is Coopers final season under contract could be his by default.

Lance is basically trying to earn a spot on the roster. I don’t see how whether Dak is resigned impacts his status. He’s not our heir apparent.

So you have zero expectations about making a playoff run anytime in the next few years.
Not a whole lot of hope with the guys in the QB room currently. More likely to happen with Prescott. Much less likely with the other two.

But that can change quickly in the NFL. Just one quality guy with the right coaching and the Cowboys are off and running to playoff success. However there is the GM issue that may be the real roadblock to "making a playoff run."

That’s the very reason I’ve been saying for years, nothing gets us past our inept FO except a franchise QB. They can overcome a lot. We’ll never find out because JJ and Co. put NO stock in the QB position. I know a 1st QB is no guarantee to be franchise QB but that’s the ONLY thing that gives us a remote chance at getting back to the big dance.

IF Dak is resigned, the Cowboys have to hope someone suffers a QB injury early and is desperate enough to trade for Lance and bail Jerry out from one of the silliest, nonsensical trades he has ever made.

I'll eliminate NFC East teams because the Cowboys should not be trying to help any of those teams, especially early in the season.

NFC North
Chicago - No. If Caleb goes down, the team will quietly tank and keep building towards the future.
Detroit - No. They have Herndon Hooker so he is their developmental guy if Goff got hurt.
Green Bay - Yes. Sean Clifford is not going to get it done. Lance is an unproven, watered-down version of Jordan Love.
Minnesota - No, they have their guy in J.J. McCarthy if Darnold gets hurt,

NFC South
Atlanta - Nope. Penix is up next.
Carolina - Maybe? Andy Dalton is their insurance but if Young gets hurt, he's still their future.
New Orleans - No. They have both Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler waiting in the wings.
Tampa Bay - Possibly. If Baker gets hurt, they have Kyle Trask. That's a recipe for last place in a really weak division.

NFC West
Arizona - I don't think so. If Kyler got hurt, they would just roll with Desmond Ridder.
Los Angeles - I seriously doubt it. McVay depends on QBs to make quick reads running similar plays out of various formations. Lance struggles with this and I don't think McVay could get him up to speed without training camp.
San Francisco - Zero chance.
Seattle - No. They have Sam Howell behind Geno.

AFC East
Buffalo - Slight maybe. Lance has some similar athletic traits to Josh. They would probably stick with Mitchell Trubisky.
Miami - They could but McDaniel is from the Shanahan tree and coached Lance is rookie year. I'd bet against it.
New England - Nope, Drake Maye is up next.
NY Jets - No. Those coaches are playing for their careers. If Rodgers gets hurt they would go Tyrod Taylor. Plus, they have Jordan Travis.

AFC North
Baltimore - Yes. Very much so. However, the Ravens FO would swindle Jerry and Stephen and we'd up trading another 4th for them to take Lance.
Cincinnati - They like Jake Browning so I wouldn't think so.
Cleveland - No. They have a full stable of QBs after Watson in Jameis Winston, Tyler Huntley, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
Pittsburgh - They have Justin Fields waiting.

AFC South
Houston - Maybe? They probably just roll with Davis Mills.
Indianapolis - No. Richardson is their present and future. Flacco drives the bus if Richardson gets hurt.
Jacksonville - No? Mac Jones gets first crack.
Tennessee - Small maybe. Mason Rudolph is their insurance. They'd probably trot out Malik Willis for him to prove whether or not he can play.

AFC West
Denver - No. Payton already has young QBs in Nix and Zach, along with a decent back-up in Jarrett Stidham.
Kansas City - No. Reid like Sean McVay, needs guys who can make quick decisions to run his Offense.
Las Vegas - I think they should. Minshew is a JAG, and I don't believe in Aidan O'Connell at all.
Los Angeles - Yes, Lance is better than Easton Stick, Lance can run Harbaugh's offense.
I just don;t get why people think a #4 pick for prospect is so terrible.

Yes...the contract is a little awkward. If you just release him..so what? Never released or bailed from a #4 pick ever? Or a 3? or a 2? How many #1 QB busted out?

Come on man.

There was no chance that Lance was ever told he would be competing with Dak to be the starter. I'm sure he was well aware of his role.

So, to answer your question, if Dak signs, Lance will be a good trooper, finish off this season and then leave as an UFA at the end of the season.

Especially since on a Jerry built team, the O is QB dependent to a fault.

I hereby predict that Lance will beat out Rush for the backup spot, whereby Rush will demand a trade. We'll get a 5th round pick for him. Then, we'll be blessed for years after that, with Super Bowls and such. Our lucky stars will align, and goodness will follow us for the rest of our days!

I here hereby predict that Trance will be given the job of QB2 based on his salary and to protect GM Jethro's EGO. Rush will not be traded in fear of Dak getting hurt.
