I admit it, this draft has me stumped

It's not just the Boys, it's everyone.

There's still tons of intrigue in the top ten. Until that gets sorted out, it's going to be a mind game between teams.

Saturday is going to be awesome.
Yeah, it is. I love not knowing what the heck will happen.

Or, you could just look at the fact that Lacewell is back and that Jerry said he wouldn't take a WR in the first and carve Robert Meachem's name into granite.

That emoticon makes me think of someone with a nervous turd.:laugh1:

As stumped as I am I think in a way it makes this draft more interesting with all of the possibilities.

Once thing will be clear...If Jerry moves up, down or stays pat we will all look back and say...Well he did give us the clues. :laugh1:
what's good about being stumped before the draft is that there won't be many shocked people when our picks are announced, or if we trade up, down or completely out of the 1st round

which will be good because there shouldn't be that much outrage, but of course there will be

With the past few years I have always been able to narrow it down between a few players. Well with the exception of the Julius trade down but normally I narrow it down to 2-3 players that I think we will take with our first pick. Usually it pans out to one of those 2-3.

Now don't get me wrong here, I am not claiming Nostradamus powers here but would just get a feel like a majority of us.

I know many times Hos and I would narrow it down and usually have about the same players we think the team will take with the first rounder. I think last year we narrowed it down to Carpenter and Lawson both with positive and negatives for each but figured either would do.

However this year I admit...I am really stumped.

One time I think Merriweather, the next minute I think it is the Texas S, then I think this WR or that WR. Than I wonder if Branch falls to us.

Now Jerry is talking about trading up or down.

I just can not get a good feel for how this will shake out because I do think he wants to trade out of the spot one way or the other.

Is anyone else stumped this year compared to others?
Basically, we're stumped because JJ really does have no great needs and lots of options. In the past, we've had big holes and players to plug into those holes; or a whole bunch of needs but just a handful of players that stood out.

There are as many as 10-15 different guys we could wind up having a shot at at 22 and that's if we stay put. And it's because nobody jumps out at you, we don't know who's going to fall, and we have no, as in zilch, big needs.

To be fair at that time I think the philosophy was to draft for backups, not players that would eventually start.

Kind of makes it even more tragic since nobody out of that draft was even a quality backup.

I will take it one step further. One of the reasons I am on the Peterson bandwagon is that I think if we draft him that we will get at least one impact player. I really do think that if we do not trade up for him, or draft a defensive back with our first pick, that this is really going to be a wasted draft. Drafting numbers doesn't really mean much unless you get guys who can stick with a team.

I am worried that if we draft normal position players they will amount to little more than just a backup. It is not a problem to draft a backup, but he should have starter ability if you are going to draft him, or it is a waste of a good pick, especially in the earlier rounds.

The exception would be a player like Peterson, a stud defensive back, or a specialty player like a kicker, a deep snapper, a fullback, or potentially another tight end. I think if we draft a pass rusher that we are reaching ala the Ebeneezer Ekuban type picks. We need impact players in the worst way.

If we don't take Peterson, I hope we defer picks into next year like crazy, or possibly get a stud free safety with that first pick.

Hope your not talking about Silverbear ..... :lmao2:

Nobody ever described me as cute...

But now that you mention it, if I'm in the right (wrong) mood, I have been known to take a chunk out of an *** or two... LOL...

Seriously, though, I don't think I've EVER been hungry enough to try on a meal as big as THAT ***...

The last time I can remember that the Cowboys didn't have an obvious need and Jerry could have really take anyone in the draft, it looked like this.

1st round - Trade down
2a- Sherman Williams
2b- Kendall Watkins
2c- Shane Hannah
3- Charlie Williams
4a- Eric Bjornson
4b- Alundice Brice
4c- Linc Harden
5a-Edward Hervey
5b- Dana Howard
7- Oscar Sturgis

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

That draft is a particularly painful weekend for me-- that was the weekend my little brother Ron died in his sleep, at home in bed... it was early Saturday morning when I got the call, I had my draft printouts spread out all over the kitchen counter, settling in to have some fun... instead, I listened to the draft on the radio as I drove me and my Mom down to Spartanburg...

I knew when I was hearing it that the Boys were blowin' it, big time... couldn't bring myself to care too much, though...

Then when I got home from that weekend, I had to put my dog down, he was 16 years old and had developed a tumor at the base of his heart... no sir, I do not have fond memories of that weekend...

And of course you're right, that draft was just gawdawful... I knew we were in trouble when I had to go look up our second, second round draft pick... normally, the Boys don't come up with a pick that makes me scratch my head until along about the sixth round, but I sure had never heard of Kendall Watkins...
