Can you feel it? Can you smell it?
There's a tangible, palpable excitement to today. It may be exhibition football, the players we love may not play much if at all, but hot damn the Cowboys tee it up and kick it off tonight.
The last time I was this excited about a season was 1992. The way 1991 unfolded and ended told me there was reason to optimistic, excited and even a little bit giddy. I could feel it in the air then.
I feel it now.
I know we are one player (#2 WR) away from being near unstoppable and I know we are one injury (Romo) away from being incredibly vulnerable. That's the way it should be. It will keep us on the edges of our seats. It will keep us tuned in and turned on. Above all it will keep us dreaming of number six and all that could mean.
Do you realize how being the first to six sets us apart? We have five. The Steelers have five. The 49ers can tell both of us they were the first to five. Don't know about you, but that chafes me a little bit. Always has.
Fans of teams other than the 49ers and Steelers love to tell us and them that we focus too hard on having five. The truth of the matter is, if they were the first to six, we'd hear about it. Rightfully so. When you boil it all down to tallow, winning is all that matters.
Winning has spoiled us. I don't know about you, but I'm fine with admitting that. Doesn't bother me in the least. Why should it? Would you rather we have to apologize because of losing? Not me.
Last year the Cowboys overtook the Dolphins as the winningest team in the NFL. Our winning percentage is now the highest in NFL History. If the fates smile on us we should widen that gap this year. We all hope that isn't the only gap that widens. There isn't a gap to 2nd place on Super Bowls, but there could be if the cards fall right.
It starts tonight. Win or lose in the pre-season, that doesn't matter. What does is that we see depth, commitment, and execution tonight. No injuries, few penalties, and focus. I expect it. We all should. I believe this team does.
There's a different feel when a team is genuinely powerful and has high expectations. How high should our expectations this year be? The answer to that question begins tonight.
I can feel it coming in the air tonight.
