I changed my mind about the trade

Except TL spent 2 seasons with that genius HC at San Fran.

Don’t let the politics at San Fran cause doubt.

TL is in Dallas for a reason.
Yeah the reason is because SF couldn’t get rid of him fast enough. Spent a boatload to get him and then were surprised they even got a 4th to unload him. He’s not starting material. I’m hoping for the best but he needs time in this offense with these coaches. Doesn’t matter what Shanahan did at this point. He’s in Dallas because they’re hoping to ‘eventually’ tap into that potential he showed when he was drafted.

Ok at this point i feel like the chick in the morgue talking to will smith "You really aren't picking up what im laying down bud"... unless you want to lose some players to the cap you are going to extend Dak so there is not a 60mill hit next year...you do understand thats comming, right?
Do not extend. It just pushes the cap hit down the road.

They already have to pay 30+ million in 2025.

The damage is done.

Nothing to do with Lance or even about rocking the boat or challenging Dak, but doesnt it feel like Jerry went rogue and made this decision on his own? I watched the videos and while it was obvious Dak and McCarthy didn't know this was coming, I'm not 100% sure that Stephen or Will McClay were involved either.

Starting to feel like a T.O. trade., who was not a bad acquisition but one that clearly undermined the authority of the coach. I'm wondering if this move might end up being the straw that breaks the McCarthy era.
I was surprised no body in the building knew. but then again as you said its Jerry.
with that said, we improved the 3rd string spot and if he can improve enough to get the back up position, then great. I don't think it will happen this year.

low risk, high reward. as Parcells use to say, somebody thought he was talented enough so if nothing else good for bottom of the roster

no its not you extend him my god you cant be this dense... Look I'm all for Trey Lance balling out and showing he can take the riegns for 2025 BUT he aint gonna play this year AND there wont be a team to play with if you dont fix Dak's cap hit..jesus.

The structure of the current contract is just absurd. The size of the cap hit in 2025, a year after the current contract has expired, is mind numbing. Folks say they'll just restructure, but Dak has all the leverage now. Absolutely horrible cap management.

Time line does not line up for me. Dak has two years, Trey has two years. No way we pay Dak $60M next year, he will be extended. If I am Trey I am gone after 2 years looking for an opportunity to start.

its pretty simple you extend Dak now because he is the best QB on the roster to win now with this team AND you need to soften that 60 mill hit comming... in 2 to 3 years if Trey Lance shows he is ready to take down the old bull the exstension will allow you to trade Dak and not strip the team around Lance.. I'm not saying this will happen but its the only way to go forward with Daks contract if Trey is better by then.

I don't know why so many people forget the Cowboys made it no secret they wanted to draft a developmental QB this past April.

But none of the guys they wanted were there for them at the point they felt like the value and need matched. So they went out and got a 23 year old Trey Lance to develop instead of using their 4th round pick next year on a college QB that would probably be the same age.

That's all there is to it. They know what they have in Cooper Rush and they wanted someone else with more upside in the event Dak goes down again.

Also remember the Cowboys now inherit the option to exercise the fifth season in Lance's rookie contract, meaning if they want they can develop him through 2025 before making a decision. And by then they will have extended Dak long term to lessen the cap hit like you said; so both players' career arcs will determine the next step. If any.

This is why I don’t like the trade. Jerry ****** up a good thing before we ever get started. They both were obviously happy for Grier and sounded like they wanted to keep him. And MM was surprised he was going to get cut. Another Jones decision.

Bug Mike is the coach, hen doesn’t have anything to do with player personnel. He’s already discussed this topic many times.!

I genuinely feel we are overthinking this. Here is the logical flow

1. Due to the emergency QB rule, there is more incentive to have a development all QB
2. Will Grier is highly unlikely to be a starter on this team, so it’s time to try something else
3. McCarthy and McClay probably agree in some kind of consistent QB pipeline being prudent
4. Trey Lance was a nuanced case where he only got a shot in one system and one offense, and injuries robbed him of reaching his potential.
5. We should continuously use this emergency slot on lottery ticket QBs
6. Trey Lance is likely a better lottery ticket than anything we will find in the 4th round next year

Except for one important detail you're missing you do not know put that in three inch headlines Jerry did not make this decision on his own you say you know how do you know not one person has said that that is speculation the man who wrote this post was saying he's speculating and that's all we see there is speculation hyperbole emotional outburst and guessing..

Which by the way it's just a giant headache you all just need to stop getting involved in the business side of football contracts and trades you don't know what goes on in the ranch I guarantee there were ten people involved in this decision five on our side five on their side that's how it works Jerry just didn't wake up one morning get a phone call and say you know what let's do it and never consult the single person.. The Dallas Cowboys are made-up of 1200 employees Jerry Jones may be the owner but there are layers upon layers of management between him and all the other players and employees he does not make any decisions on his own he may break ties he may force his opinion on others he may make it clear he wants something to happen but that doesn't mean he did it on his own....
You really need to invest in some periods. I have no idea what you're saying here. Not being rude. I want to respond to this, but I honestly don't know what's been said.

Yeah he does. I was at the game he dissed on the Star. He should’ve never been in s Cowboys uniform after that.

I didn’t like Deion’s self-serving promotion, but he never disrespected the Star or the Cowboys.
That used to bug me until I realized that the NFL is in the entertainment business and boy was that entertaining.

Looking back, it was a terrible deal for Dallas.

Restructuring/extending the deal just makes it worse.

They want out and TL is part of the plan.

2023 - 26 mill hit
2024 - 59 mill hit
2025 - gone. 25 mill hit
2026 - gone 11 mill hit

It’s possible to get out after 2023. But there is still a lot of dead cap to spread out.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/dak-prescott-19089/

They are paying big money for a QB who hasn’t been to a Pro Bowl since 2018.

Get back to me when trey has a preseason game like grier just did. he is now gone due to the trade.
this was a spur of the moment thing, SF called jerry and he had to decide quickly.
Being a former 1st round pick does not impress me, but it evidently does many here and jerry.

Dak may not have known, but this isn't a move you would discuss with Dak. I feel certain McCarthy & others were in on the discussion though

Do you see how it might, if he ends up living up to his initial potential?
he didnt play much in college, he already sat on the bench two full years in the nfl, Dak would absolutely have to crap the bed or get a bad injury for Lance to be the starter in 2024. Sure, ok, it isnt impossible, but I dont see him being the starter of Dallas at any point
