I am one excited football junkie about this season. I like flying under the radar. I don't mind it one bit. I like it way better than the high expectations of 2008. Maybe it's because I know my hopes can't come crashing back down to reality. Who knows?

The fact of the matter is, I really like this roster. For all the drama about depth one fact remains, a healthy starting 22 with talent is dangerous. Forgive me for daring to think it, but we have a pretty dangerous starting 22. Many of them have proven to be Pro Bowl caliber in past years.

Do I like everything about this team? No, but I like enough to feel excited. Let's start at the top and then take a stroll through the roster.

I am not a Wade Phillips fan as a Head Coach, but I can't deny him running the Defense for the entire season is a plus. I am not superstitious, but I'm superstitious. Wade has never won a playoff game as Head Coach, we're in a post season slump, and the Super Bowl is in Miami, Florida. We've made 3 trips to Miami for Super Bowls, lost all three times. Yeah, that was the Orange Bowl, still...

I was never as down on the rest of the staff as others with one exception, Bruce Read. Goodbye you Lloyd Christmas look-alike. Hello Joe DeCamillis. I am kind of glad Brian Stewart is gone, but I think he got a bit of a raw deal too. Joe D. being here has me very excited. Now that pre-season is over I think the mixture of veterans and rookies to the Special Teams will improve the coverage and tackling. Why? I dunno, because that's what Joe D's. teams usually do.

Have all the doubts about Tony Romo that you want. You'll never sell me. I think he's a top 5 QB in the NFL. Yeah, I know all about the December fades. The same ones that have been happening to this team since 1997, way before he arrived here. We finally drafted a QB again, and the guy I never wanted here, Brad "Noodle" Johnson, is gone. I'm not a Jon Kitna fan, but he did show an arm in Pre-season.

Nothing changes at RB except that maybe we utilize them better now that we know them better. Nothing excites me more about this team than the prosepct of Felix Jones on screens. That guy in open space equals good things to me. Cricket is back to lead the way. Say what you want about him, but he picks up blitzes and plays good Special Teams. I wish Tashard Choice didn't have to be a #3, but am glad he's our #3.

The distraction is gone and we're back to not having a #1 WR. At least that's the roll call. I don't agree. I've always felt Roy Williams was a star mired on a bad team. Not a doubt in my mind he will provide some firepower to this Offense this year. I'm still excited about Miles Austin. Ogletree was a pleasant surprise.

The deepest unit on this team is at TE. I think our backup TE is going to be a serious weapon in 2009. He just is impossible to cover and has great hands. If he were not on the same team as the best TE in the NFL I'd say he was Pro Bowl caliber. I look for him to play some WR and to be a goal line option.

This team's success revolves around the O-line. I firmly believe that. There are a couple of players I wish were gone from that group, but my focus is on the starting 5, whom I think are more than adequate. I never liked Kyle Kosier until I saw how big a hole his absence made. Talk about wake up call. I know there will be some irritating false starts by our Tackles. I also know this OL is better than some suspect.

I have been excited about the arrival of Olshansky all off season. I think he is an improvement over Canty, no disrespect meant to Canty. I just think he plays more perfectly to a 3-4 scheme as a run stuffer and will take pressure off Ratliff and Ware. Siavii finally showed me something in the last PS game, I still would like to see that backup NT upgraded.

Welcome to the spotlight Anthony Spencer. Call me crazy but I think he is the key to this season. If he provides any kind of pass rush at all it makes Ware even that more dangerous. In my opinion, DeMarcus Ware is the best Defensive player in the NFL. The additions of Olshansky and Brooking along with Spencer's arrival make him the most formidable force for this D that we could possibly have. Make no mistake about it, Brooking is a huge addition. I loved Zach Thomas, but if you saw Brooking this pre-season you caught a glimpse of someone who could be every bit as disruptive as the under appreciated Bradie James. Smart players at ILB are crucial. Players who are smart and play fast as James and Brooking do, is a blessing.

There's a squabble over who the RCB should be. I think that is irrelevant. I think all 3 CBs will be on the field a lot because in today's NFL Nickel and Dime packages are more important than base schemes. Last year the CBs did everything well except one thing. They did not take away the ball nearly enough. That will be crucial this year as well.

Improved coverage from Gerald Sensabuagh could help in that department. In fact it should help. If you take the top team in sacks and add some takeaways to the picture you potentially have a dominant Defense.

A steady Offense and a dominant Defense with improved Special teams could mean a better season than a lot of people think. I'm excited to see if they can pull it off.

Interesting fact, we need at least 11-5 to not have our very first losing decade. Not even the 1960's before the powerhouse Cowboys arrived did we have a losing decade. Is that a tall order? You bet it is. Is it impossible? Not in my book.

Outlook for 2009? Better chemistry, better special teams, Wade running the Defense for the whole year, and a return to health on the Offense, could mean a return to prominence. Standing in the way is the fact we are once again in a tough division battle. Welcome back optimism, we missed you. 12-4 and NFC East Champions.

Pass the Koolaid. Make it blue please. I'm not superstitious, but I'm superstitious.

I'm drinking the Koolaid with you, Hostile.
I keep hearing 7-9 (by Emmit today) or 9-7 (by everyone on ESPN radio last night....but I see 10-6 or 11-5 and the playoffs. The home division games will be HUGE.

I too am very optimistic. We look like a well organized, efficient, wear 'em down offense and a sack happy aggressive defense. Every piece seems to be in place.

The one thing that scares me is the teams heart. But that is not determined by the HC, as media people want you to believe. I think it all depends on each game and how the team responds to the pressure. That you can't define in the preseason. It has to be actually be developed.

I agree Hos, thats what I've been saying. If the Cowboys avoid injuries, I think they win the division easily. I just think they are that much better when you consider the Giants WR issues and the fact that the Eagles lost Johnson (DC) and their defensive leader in Dawkins. Actually, the only injuries that worry me are the OL and DL. I was a bit worried about safety too, but it appears that maybe it's finally clicking with Watkins. Now, that doesn't mean I want him to start, it just means I think I can be more comfortable with him in the lineup if need be.

As for Brooking. I picked up Madden 2010 for my PS3 the other day. My first game I played Brooking picked off three passes! That has to be a good sign! :laugh2:

Oh, I'm excited too. I really can't wait to see Roy Williams and Tony Romo connect. I'm glad the puke T.O. is gone. One thing know will improve from this, Tony Romo's read progressions. He has the ability to read the field better than any QB in this league. I think that's his best asset.

And I'm equally as stoked about Felix Jones' healthy return. I think this guy will help us win games single-handed.

I think Brooking is going to be a beast for us and I think the Negative Nancys can stop waiting for the sky to fall.

I also think our secondary is much better. Sensabaugh looks great out there and I think our corners will do a good job, which will help our pass rush.

I am not a Wade Phillips fan as a Head Coach, but I can't deny him running the Defense for the entire season is a plus. I am not superstitious, but I'm superstitious. I think Wade is underrated. I don't know what else to say. I agree about the positives of him running the defense. Hail to Ware!

I'm out of the loop regarding this paragraph. I do know we have some talent to work with.

I'm glad you've come around on Tony Romo. You'll soon come around on Kitna if, heaven forbid, he ever has to fill in. The knock on him is he never had a good team to play with, but I think he's a top-notch QB and could start for a hand full of teams around the league.

Felix Jones has hall of fame potential. I can't wait to see this guy for a full season. Choice is a baller, too. I'm not happy my assumption that he won't get many carries, but I'm glad we have the quality of depth there at the position. This fact alone is one reason we can be strong until December. Any one or two of our RBs can go down and we likely won't run out of guys to carry the ball for us.

100% agree about Roy Williams. He lit it up at Texas and look at what Detroit did last year. It's no wonder. I have a feeling people will be eating their own feet this year about Roy Williams. The guy is a player.

I disagree on Austin and I think Ogletree steals his job and pushes for Crayton's.

I disagree and say RB is our strongest unit. But I know we have the best TEs in the league too. That's saying something about this team. We have two of the most important units littered with talent. But the sky is falling....

The O-line is important, but I think Tony Romo can deal with a few missed blocks. The way he's carrying the ball in his core this year is a big improvement and will cut down on his fumbles. Penalties have to decrease. But I think overall our line is good enough to play ball.

I'm waiting to see about Oshansky. I don't know much about him, but this is why I'm glad WP is our HC. I trust him with our personnel on defense.

Smart players at ILB are crucial. Players who are smart and play fast as James and Brooking do, is a blessing.
This is why my sky is not falling. I think Spencer has a breakout year. He's going to be productive because teams will double team Ware and that will leave him open. Not to mention, Brooking is a top-notch linebacker. Me thinks the Negative Nancys are unaware of this fact. The guy is a pro-bowler and one of the best players the Falcons ever had.

I agree. It's irrelevant until somebody gets hurt and then it's relevant. If Newman gets hurt, then our guys will have started some games and that's an important factor. One, it cuts down on the pressure of playing CB in your first NFL game as a starter . Two, it gives our guys a chance to step up in the absence of Newman. (knock on wood.)

Improved coverage from Gerald Sensabuagh could help in that department. In fact it should help. If you take the top team in sacks and add some takeaways to the picture you potentially have a dominant Defense.
Not to mention the guy can hit....

A steady Offense and a dominant Defense with improved Special teams could mean a better season than a lot of people think. I'm excited to see if they can pull it off.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say our offense will be explosive. But if we have to rely on running the clock, we can do that too.

Interesting fact, we need at least 11-5 to not have our very first losing decade. Not even the 1960's before the powerhouse Cowboys arrived did we have a losing decade. Is that a tall order? You bet it is. Is it impossible? Not in my book.
Nah, it's not impossible. I think we can achieve that with our schedule and with our personnel.

Standing in the way is the fact we are once again in a tough division battle. Welcome back optimism, we missed you. 12-4 and NFC East Champions.
I agree. We had better chemistry when we cut TO loose. It can only get better from here. With Romo at the helm, I think it does.

You'll need to be unglued at some point. Does Koolaid work for that? If so, be sure to save some for after the game. And no half time restroom breaks for you.

I already joined the superbowl bandwagon in a thread right here a couple of weeks ago, so you know where my optimism level is.

I agree with your post, Hos. I can't for the life of me understand why so many people can't see that the main reason we didin't make the playoffs last year was injuries.

Yeah, we folded in the last two games when we could have made it in spite of the injuries, but if Romo doesn't go down and have to deal with a weakened injured finger for most of the remainder of the year, we would have already secured a playoff spot before those games.

That doesn't even account for Kosier as you pointed out, or a one-armed Flo with an infection in the other hand, Wittens injuries throughout the season, Felix, MBIII etc, etc

I think there is plenty of reason for optimism regardless of whether one thinks we will go to the SB or not.

Bingo.

I find that most fans who think the sky is falling seem to the the younger types, the whining types, the Negative-Nancy-sky-is-falling types.

The game is complex. It takes a complex mind to see what is really going on out there. When you get your opinion straight from ESPN, it's hard to make a realistic football analysis about this team. The media is full of hot air, which apparently provokes a lot of the hollow heads to rise up to their level of perspective. "The Cowboys 2009 draft is a bust!", they say, before anyone ever takes the field.

Anyone with a clue would know this team is one of the best assembled teams the Cowboys ever had. Whether they go out and prove it is another story, but I think they will.

All the negativity has actually put somewhat of a damper on my excitement. Im not gonna lie.

I realise opinion doesn't matter but I can't log on the Zone or turn on the TV without people just hammering this team and telling me how bad everyone is.

No backlash yet? I must be losing my touch.

Nope, and there shouldnt be. Good post Hos.

Agree 100%

Our starting lineup if healthy is loaded. Look at the defense, who is the worst player starting on our defense? I'd say its very arguably FS Ken Hamlin, who was in the probowl 2 seasons ago. I'm not a big Hamlin fan, but if he's the WORST of the starters, thats pretty damn good.

Who's the worst starter on offense? I guess if you say our starters have a FB out there, it'd be the FB. If you say its a 2TE set, the worst starter is probably LG Kyle Kosier, and we kinda know that he's a very solid NFL guard.

Our backups that will play the most are pretty good too.
