The fact of the matter is, I really like this roster. For all the drama about depth one fact remains, a healthy starting 22 with talent is dangerous. Forgive me for daring to think it, but we have a pretty dangerous starting 22. Many of them have proven to be Pro Bowl caliber in past years.
Do I like everything about this team? No, but I like enough to feel excited. Let's start at the top and then take a stroll through the roster.
I agree, although there are quite a few teams that could say the same thing. I like this roster, but I'm afraid we'll see another year of starting out well and fizzling because each year it seems that we get an injury here and there and we can't overcome it. In '06 it was Ellis, in '07 it was Owens late in the year, last year it was Newman, etc.
I was never as down on the rest of the staff as others with one exception, Bruce Read. Goodbye you Lloyd Christmas look-alike. Hello Joe DeCamillis. I am kind of glad Brian Stewart is gone, but I think he got a bit of a raw deal too. Joe D. being here has me very excited. Now that pre-season is over I think the mixture of veterans and rookies to the Special Teams will improve the coverage and tackling. Why? I dunno, because that's what Joe D's. teams usually do.
Joe D can coach. Stewart was given quite a bit of carte blanche and had disappointing defenses. Then Wade took over last year and the defense blossomed. Tough to keep Stewart around after that.
Have all the doubts about Tony Romo that you want. You'll never sell me. I think he's a top 5 QB in the NFL. Yeah, I know all about the December fades. The same ones that have been happening to this team since 1997, way before he arrived here. We finally drafted a QB again, and the guy I never wanted here, Brad "Noodle" Johnson, is gone. I'm not a Jon Kitna fan, but he did show an arm in Pre-season.
There's no way Romo is a top 5 QB if he can't cut down his turnovers. He's got the accuracy, pocket presence and big play ability, but if he can't cut down the turnovers, fuhgettaboutit.
IMO, if Dallas (or any team) wants to have success in December and beyond, they have to:
1. Protect the ball on offense
2. Have a decent running game
3. Have a decent run defense
4. Be a team that is in the top 10 in sacks/pass attempt.
5. Have decent special teams play.
6. Have a top 10 scoring defense
I think Dallas should have 2-5, but #1 is still up in the air and it mostly falls on Romo's shoulders and some problems with #6 also fall on Romo turning the ball over in our own territory.
Nothing changes at RB except that maybe we utilize them better now that we know them better. Nothing excites me more about this team than the prosepct of Felix Jones on screens. That guy in open space equals good things to me. Cricket is back to lead the way. Say what you want about him, but he picks up blitzes and plays good Special Teams. I wish Tashard Choice didn't have to be a #3, but am glad he's our #3.
I'll wait and see with Garrett. He horribly disappointed me last season and this offseason. Passed the buck badly and I'm not convinced that he can raise the bar on his performance until I see it.
This team's success revolves around the O-line. I firmly believe that. There are a couple of players I wish were gone from that group, but my focus is on the starting 5, whom I think are more than adequate. I never liked Kyle Kosier until I saw how big a hole his absence made. Talk about wake up call. I know there will be some irritating false starts by our Tackles. I also know this OL is better than some suspect.
I've been a Kosier fan since day 1. The guy can play and it's a shame that it took him getting injured for people to see how good he is (and how much Procter sucks, and I called Procter out against Cleveland in week 1 last year and people thought I was nuts). Usually the O-Line is important, but the Steelers O-Line was pretty lousy last year and they won and the Cardinals O-Line wasn't any great shakes either. The team's success revolves around the QB. Some QB's are so great that they don't need a lot of help, some get help from certain spots and blossom, some need a lot of help but once they get it they are tough to beat. But it's the QB. I think Romo doesn't need much to put up good numbers, but in the end I think he needs some quality running so they don't need him to throw 40 times a game.
I think we are between 7 and 12 games this year, and I've got us at 9-7. Just can't trust this team, yet.
