Actually, Gurode started his first two and one half years at Colorado at Center then moved to Guard in his Junior season. Yes, he was drafted as a Center by the Campo team but only played there one season. From then on he was our starting RG and backup Center.

My point is he is a Center that was converted to RG and then Back to Center ...... apparently twice now :laugh2:

Time after time I see mocks put up, all 7 rounds, all the draft discussion, and I do not think one time have I seen Center brought up.

We have to do something here.

Folks we have 1 Center on our roster, Gurode.

There are no others, thats it. We do not even have one on the practice squad.

If Gurode goes down we are in serious, serious trouble. We have all seen how being weak at Center can totally ruin your offense.

So it does not seem as if there is any thought of drafting one, so are people thinking we will sign one as a FA at some point?

Is there a reason this should not be a target position on Day 2?
My mock did this.

Dang, I like that new mock. Probably the right spot to get a back up for Gurode as well. We should be able to get a decent Center on day 2.

I know I am jumping of subject here, but you really think Waters will last until the 7th round? That would be one heck of a 7th round pick. I know his knee injury has caused him to slip, but that is a pretty long drop.

I was thinking he may be picked as high as round 4.

I looked at 3 different sites and where they slotted players. He was 6th round or 7th round on all of them. I was thinking 5th myself. I like the kid.

Not big on Dantish.

He was much better at guard than he was at center.
As a backup he has time to develop at both.

Yhea, I like him as well. If he is there in the 5th, I would take him there and not think twice about it.

Why worry about what mock drafters do or say? How many of them had Hatcher drafted by Dallas last year? Or by anybody?

If his knee is back he's starter quality. IMO.

Why would you waste a second round pick on a backup center? Especially when the team has a long term starter locked up to a new contract. Major league waste.

Find one later. Datish in 4-5 would be OK. Has experience at tackle, guard and center and was first team All Big Ten.

Or use Procter/Berger to fill that hole.

The Cowboys have been working Procter, Berger, and Darilek at center. This is a position that teams usually groom a low draft pick or rookie free agent when they have an entrenched young starter at the position. College experience at center isn't even needed, Stepnoski was an undersized guard at Pitt.

Very valid point. There are several guards that I would rather spend a draft pick on and try to make then centers rather than spend a pick on a quite frankly "weak" group of centers after the first couple have been drafted.

I'm telling you Winicki, keep an eye on this kid Lucas. He can play both Guard and Center, he's not huge at 303 but he's very strong. He's also athletic enough to get to the LB. He played with knee and ankle injuries this year and still had a pretty good year. I think he's going to develop into a guy who could probably play as a back up Center and Guard. He's also a guy who will probably be there in the 6th or 7th. This guy might end up being a pretty good player.

I wouldn't have a problem with Lucas. It appears he is strong enough. That's a problem I have with many of the true centers. They don't seem to be strong enough to be used at guard.

There are a host of guys at the guard position that seem to be superior players period to virtually all of the true centers, at least as far as being offensive lineman... and if any could become a substitute center I would be thrilled.

Here is a brief list:

Aaron Sears, Tennesee, 6032, 319, 5.41
Ryan Harris, Notre Dame, 6044, 305, 5.11
Manuel Ramirez, Texas Tech, 6030, 326, 5.19
Allen Barbre, Missouri Southern, 6040, 300, 4.88
Andy Alleman, Akron, 6040, 305, 5.04
Marshall Yanda, Iowa, 6037, 307, 5.11
Dan Santucci, Notre Dame, 6034, 301, 5.15
Mansfield Wrotto, Georgia Tech, 6030, 317, 5.44
Josh Beckman, Boston College, 6015, 313, 5.43
Mike Jones, Iowa, 6050, 309, 5.46
