That darn Rob Ryan. He demanded it. Nevermind that he did not have to be listened to.

Next you will hear he used Jedi mind tricks or something.

Just stating what happened. As was said above, Jerry did not have to go along with it.

Rob Ryan convinced Jerry that he just needed better CBs and he would create a great defense. He failed.

Marinelli just said in an interview 2 days ago that they are going to play primarily man coverage this year.

And Kiffin promised the same thing.

Sorry, man defense does not work too well unless you have both the pass rush and the right secondary personnel.

There seems to be this on going and insane idea that we ran zone all year and that is why Carr and and to a lesser degree, Claiborne failed.

Completely untrue, but it keeps getting repeated like it matters.

The real problem is that they need to pick a scheme. I would prefer Marinelli do what he did in Chicago and get a bunch of cheap CBs that can play zone.

He does not have that here. He has two players handpicked to be in Ryan's defense. They also happen to cost a lot, so that means they will play. And play a lot.

Marinelli saying he will play more man is like Bill Walsh saying nevermind, I will give up the WCO and just run what Lombardi did.

Then switch to a D that doesn't emphasize cbs?

I mean Carr and Claiborne but then play them off or hide them in zone?
@ChrisWesseling: "You can find a Cover 2 corner anywhere. I can go down to the 7-11 in Bloomington and get one." -- Mike Zimmer, mic'd up on @nflnetwork

The short answer of it is Jerry saw the team lose to the Giants in Week 17 of the 2007 season and with Ware, Spencer, Ratliff, and Hatcher all on the roster and thought that the reason they got beat was Newman and Scandrick not being able to cover anyone. He went into that offseason thinking that changes there were the difference between the team being a playoff contender or not.

The main problem here (like many of the Cowboys problems) is that they do not have a "football guy" running their player acquisition, and instead have an Owner who gets influenced by the hottest trends from year to year. Most teams have an offensive or defensive identity that they believe in (I.E. Seattle wants physical corners who press you at the line; Chicago wants tall, big, physical receivers) and our team doesn't. Instead the Cowboys have a guy who makes personnel decisions without a long term vision which leads to out-of-place players when you have philosophical turnover every couple of years.

Isn't that a little bit of the point?

I don't know about other posts in this thread, but I was clearly just explaining how we ended up with so much invested at corner.
It's up to whoever is into it to assign blame if they feel that's necessary.

Okay and I find it hilarious that Rob Ryan is characterized like he ran the joint.

True, we have an inept front office. Untrue, we have an inept front office.

It's funny that Jerry says that he like the continuity w/ JG at helm...

but the last 3 years has been anything but continuity.

This is simply Jerry not understanding a pass rush is what makes a defense gin.

We had a top 10 defense under Ryan until all of those injuries.

I liked Ryan overall, but I could see where coaches and scouts had problems with him.

While the defense improved in New Orleans substantially the year before, the Saints didn't quite have the offense that year as Payton and company were suspended for Bounty Gate. The Saints were 5th in offensive efficiency in 2013 according to FO.com and 9th in 2012. But the bigger part was Brees' 19 int's in 2012 vs. 12 in 2013.

I re-watched the Patriots vs. Saints game on NFLN and the Patriots made Ryan look quite foolish. They simply picked and choosed when they would go hurry-up, no huddle and Rob couldn't adjust and it cost them. Then the final pass by Brady was terribly undisciplined defense by the safety.

Sound familiar?

I have no problem with the idea of it being ridiculous how much money we locked up in corners. I completely agree with it. I even stated that when we signed Carr.

But, that is the risk you run with hiring a coach like Ryan. He needs athletic CB's that are great in man coverage to run his system. And that just drives up the price for CB's higher. And if he continues at this same rate with the Saints, he will drive up their price for CB's as well.
