I fully expect the Cowboys to trade down

Looking at their pre-draft visits and perceived interests, I think the Cowboys would like to trade down.

- The Cowboys have visited/will visit with several 1st round DT prospects that will be had in the 10-25 range, specifically Nkedimeche and Rankins.
- The Cowboys supposedly love Paxton Lynch, and by trading down from #4, they could receive extra picks as ammunition to trade back into the 1st round if he is there at a pick they are comfortable with trading for.

By looking at patterns within their pre-draft visits, you can also see what type of positions they may be targeting and what level of importance they place on those positions -

- They have been looking at quite a few safeties, but not as many CBs. I think they are comfortable with our CBs and are more concerned with replacing Wilcox/Church. I believe for now they will continue to play Jones as a hybrid FS/CB.
- They have been looking at RBs that will go in the 3rd-5th rounds.
- They supposedly have interest in and have visited a few 2nd-4th round WRs that could make excellent #2 WRs.

Another point I find interesting - Stephen Jones has said before that the Cowboys generally sign FAs for depth, and draft for starters. I do not believe the Cowboys envision Morris, Mayowa, or J. Crawford as starters. I believe they really like Thornton, but he could be another really good depth signing if the right DT is there in the first few rounds.

I feel as if the Cowboys are really focusing on DT, QB, SS, RB and WR in the first few rounds of this draft, in that level of importance.

Going into the draft planning to trade down is a very bad strategy. A trade down is something you do if the price Knocks your socks off. Planning a trade down means little value for the trade down. I still don't see who teams are going to be willing to pay for trading up. Being prepared for a trade down is smart. Expecting or even wanting to trade down is what gets you little value for the trade down

The Rams may want to trade up over Philly and San Fran for a QB at 4.

They could just as easily be preparing to trade back into the first. I agree that the trade down has not produced much value for Dallas . When Dallas traded back and took Frederick, I always thought that Jerry got screwed over on the trade down . It seems like Dallas gives up too much to trade up and gets too little to trade down.

If the Cowboys truly want Lynch, why would you trade down to 15?

Because he could likely be had at 15. If he's not, there are prospects such as Nkedimeche and Rankins.

Perhaps I'm reading too much into things, but I'm just thinking out loud.

Exactly right. Understand the thought process at work here. This team has a broken down starting QB on borrowed time and nothing in the pipeline resembling even a functional future starter. Our future is bleak unless this gets addressed soon.

So now if the Cowboys are targeting Lynch that must mean the scouts have a franchise caliber grade on him. They are telling Jerry and Stephen this is our guy. This is our future.

If this is in fact the intel, why the hell would you get cute, trade down and risk losing this player? It makes no sense. If we treated cornerback this way these people would be breathing into paper bags.

I understand maximizing the value of draft picks. I also understand what it means to live in the NFL as a have not in this QB driven league.

If you define a franchise QB in this draft get that player. By all means necessary. There are other years to trade down and take lesser positions.

Especially when the Eagles, Saints and Rams could all take a QB. They could all 3 go by pick 8.

My dream scenarios:

Cowboys #4 for 49ers #7 / #37 / #68
or
Cowboys #4 for Rams #15 / #43 / #45

More picks please!!

I don't think 49ers are going to give #2 and #3 to move up 3 spots.

Rams probably give one of their seconds and a third although it is a much bigger move, maybe you could get both number 2's. If you could get both, I would definitely go this way.

If the Rams move up from #15 all the way to #4 then I want their 1st rounder next year as well. If they want to get their franchise QB then they better pay a premium. I know you can't base every trade off of the Rams-Commanders RG3 trade but they only moved from #6 to #2 and had to give up multiple 1st rounders.

That's a key point.

I don't want to take Geno Smith or EJ Manual just because they are the hihest rated QBs that year and I have a top 5 pick and "because everyone knows you have to draft in the top 5 to get a franchise QB"
The actual player needs to be worth it.

If he is, in your team's opinion, then grab him.

Yes. Which gives you the ability to take our 2nd round choice along with another of these picks and jump back into the bottom of the first round.
