Felix Jones ran a 4.49 at the combine.

That's only .03 of difference with Miles Austin.

A lot of people were disappointed with Felix's 40 time.

Look how that turned out.

If you want to know a players game speed why not time them in full pads at the combine? The teams would get a true time.

Because Speed is just 1 form of what makes you a big play guy.

It takes several things for you to be able to be a deep threat. Not just pure speed.

Thats why some of the best big play guys in the game won't necesarrily win a footrace.

That is a good question.

I think they should time players both with and without gear.

You can say it a million times you can't judge speed by the 40. Many aren't going to listen. You have to see their speed on the field. It's not hard. They're the ones running a good bit faster than all the rest.

Austin gets wide opened mainly because no one respects him, and will occasionally gamble and get out of position, but he's not smoking anyone off the ball, neither is he taking a simple 2 yard pass, and out-running, breaking tackles all the way to the end zone.

I wish we would stop this invisible comparing of him and the star, he's not in that league so let's just stop this non sense.

BLAH BLAH BLAH Ive seen him take a slant 30 yards and get behind people in one on one coverage time and again. After that GB game two years ago teams learned he can get deep and started to respect that. His game has evolved from simply being deep two years ago as he showed when healthy last year that he can get open and make catches on short and intermediate routes.

The combination of RW11 and him on fades in the red zone is high. Hes just a great all around fit for splitting out wide.

Now this is his rookie season but nonetheless this shows the guy is pretty darn fast he shows good acceleration and when he gets in the open field the guy turns it on and seperates himself from any would be tackler by 5 yards http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysQ0Alrdc2U&NR=1

Anyone else notice who was in the wedge? Al Johnson and McQ.....that is probably the only play either have them made in a Cowboys uni. :laugh1:

This is why Austin is fast with "football speed".

Watch that kickoff, and time him from the 40 yards to the end zone, where he's running full sprint, holding a football, and with 15lbs of pads/helmet on him.

I timed it 3 times, and got just under 4.5 each time.

He is a big, strong receiver so wearing those pads doesn't affect his speed.

Whereas, you get a lot of 4.3/4.4 guys in shorts who, in pads, slow down a few 10ths of a second.

Compare it to this play by Owens (his 72 yarder against the Eagles).

He hits the 40 yard line just prior to catching, but he catches in full stride.

Again I timed three times, and got between 4.5 and 4.6 each time.

And everyone acknowledges Owens is fast.

Austin is just as fast.

If a WR can get separation, catch the ball, run good routes, and improvise as necessary then I'm happy. Throw some speed in there and you have something special.

Last year, during training camp, the coaches commented that Austin might be the fastest guy on the team not named Terence Newman. I think he's very fast, 40-times be damned.

Felix ran a 4.47 at the combine, and yet outran Quentin Demps to score on that 98-yard TD return -- who ran a 4.39 at the combine. As an earlier poster described, there's a lot that goes into running a 40... that doesn't always translate into football speed.

Austin is fast. Real fast. And I think we're all gonna get a glimpse real soon.

Why does everyone think Miles Austin is so fast? I did a quick google search on Miles Austin and found this on SI.com

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2006/draft/players/29607.html

It says his 40 time was 4.52.

I'm sorry but 4.52 isn't a blazing speed by any stretch. I'm sure he is a little faster then his college days but how much can someone improve their speed?

If he was so fast why was he a undrafted free agent? Guys who are really fast get drafted even though they may need a few years to develop.

Maybe I'm missing something here. Was Miles Austin hurt when he ran his 40 therefor his 4.52 isn't very accurate?

I'm not down on Miles Austin or anything like that. I was hoping for some clarification on his speed.
Want actual game proof of his speed? Remember that TD pass he caught where You-Know-Who (the guy that is old and has lost a step) came across the field, caught up to him and provided blocks to let him score?

...oh wait.

Keep dreaming my friend. I know you all are excited of the new direction we're going in with the wholesome new attitude and all, but trying to make Miles Austin into something special is a Jerry Jones wet dream, and you all should wake up from your dream ASAP. Austin is nothing more than a passer byer.

umm try again. i dont trust wade but given that hes our coach i will back him because i love my team. I'm mixed on TO. Now that the decision is made I hope that him being out of the lockerroom and his lenghthening tooth will outweigh the loss of his production but I am anything but sure.

Austin has shown that he can get behind and get separation from NFL corners in several games now. His knock was his hands and just because you are one of these people that thinks that the benefit of one is the detriment of another that does not change.

TO will still be TO regardless of what Miles does. One thing I am sure of is that with Romo throwing to him, Miles will be a good receiver if he can stay healthy for quite a few years.

Not sure about his timed speed, but once he is in pads he his hard to catch i can tell you that much.

This is what I see as well.. The eyeball test tells me that he doesn't get run down. I think people also said last year that Felix Jones wasn't that "fast!" I could care less what a guy runs in shorts and a t shirt. Unless they start playing in shorts and t shirts I don't see how it is relavant at all. How fast are you in full pads and with the football in hand.
