The family excuse is the perfect straight arm....not much anyone can say about it... Of course, I don't believe it. In fact, it makes it worse. "My family is too important...unless you give me money" Nice move.

Joe Montana isn't Joe Montana without his super bowl appearances...asking for $100,000 to appear at a game that pretty much "made" him as a household name, is a joke.

I agree on both counts. Esp the family deal...come on, i think Nathaniel (or whatever his name is) would understand if Dad had a SUPERBOWL appearance to go to....

And what child's basketball league has games on Sunday?? Superbowl Sunday on top of that. Sounds like a publicist got to Joe.

Asked during the interview if an appearance fee kept him away from the game, Montana said, "Not at all. When I was playing football I missed my two girls. They're in college now and they're gone. These boys are at the age right now at 16 and 13 that I want to be around. I don't want to miss them before they're gone."

Very simple explanation guys, when he played he missed most of his 2 girls growing up and now he doesn't want to miss his two boys before they are gone. This money crap is just mediots making a story that just isn't there. Bradshaw preferred to be with his family as well but nobody rips him a new one? What about the Miami guy that didn't show, no bad rips on him either?

if i'm being a critic, i would respond that joe montana has the luxury of not working another day in his life as a result of his work in the NFL.

working class, blue collar folks, like most of the NFL's supporters, dont have this luxury. people like you and me arent able to spend every waking minute with our children if we choose- we have to work for a living. God forbid he shows up to be honored by a league that gave him this luxury.

My point is that he wasn't asked to perform in a game or skills competition. They just asked that he walk on the field and wave so that they could honor him.

As far as how much money he made the league, that's a weak arguement. I have personally made my company over 3 million last year, but my salary hardly comes close to that. Its called a business. Its also a combined effort. If Joe played those Superbowls by himself, I doubt he would have had as much success, same with any business.

With all do respect I don't see how you can compare your company to the NFL, you are selling a service or product for your company and more than likely can easily be replaced with some one trained to do what you do. In the case of Montana and the NFL, Montana IS the product. Without elite players there is no league. I'll agree with the fact that no one man makes a team, though i don't see how it is relative to this arguement, but i ask in the same since take Montana off that team and do they win those Super Bowls?
Let's just agree to disagree, because i can't be convinced that Montana would be in the wrong even if he did ask for the $100K.
