To Detroit. When? The city is changing, for the better. It takes time. I have been going over there since the 70's, and have never felt in danger...

i remember going from canada to detroit by car but i just drove through the downtown area.
also pass by sarnia on the same trip...

I use to live in Sarnia about 1985...lol

I use to talk about the area with haleyrules,

I am 30 minutes from downtown Detroit...
You are close to Windsor? I used to stay at the Pontchartrain Hotel and get damned good Cajun food in Detroit. They also had jazz bands in the summer out on the roof of the adjoining building. That's where I met Mr T right before Rocky III came out.

My favorite memory or Detroit was one Halloween in 1978. WWWW, the album rock station then, was having a costume contest and since they were a client of mine ask me to be one of the judges. It was in the late afternoon before all the partying started and it was out on the lawn next to the station on a pretty busy thoroughfare. I was sitting at the table taking it all in and since it was unseasonably warm, there was plenty of eye candy and about 500 people and as I look toward the street I see it coming, the eventual winner. It was a guy in a complete head to toe costume of the male genitalia with the testicles as feet. He was accompanied by his girlfriend, we would later find out, dressed as the female counter to that and this was a showstopper of major proportions. They had, evidently, spent a lot of time on these costumes.

The people doing the on air work were trying to describe what they were seeing within the confines of the rules and couldn't stop laughing as the guy would start hopping around and chasing his girlfriend. The crowd was not only raucous but growing and that brought the cops out. We couldn't even conduct the contest because the cops were threatening to arrest them because they'd had some complaints from motorists. They'd come from about 3 blocks away down a really busy boulevard and their had been some really close calls with the traffic. Couldn't imagine why.

Well, the guy freaks and takes off hopping toward the boulevard and as he gets close I look over and these two cops are falling down in a fit of laughter. The other two cops are in pursuit, chasing this hopping ***** into the street and the crowd is in a mix of yelling and crying from laughing so hard. It was the funniest scene I have ever seen live. They brought the guy back and gave him the choice of taking it off or going to jail and then they saw his girlfriend. They were studying her trying to figure out what she was and then they made the connection. They just stood there in shock. When they found out it was a girl, they seemed relieved and gave her the same choice.

Well, they won the contest and a fine prize, a rock cruise, and the crowd not only loved it but they were cheering the cops for not arresting them. I watched the cops get back to their cars and all 4 paused right before they got in, looked back and I could read their faces, 'wait until we get back to the station house'. Then, as the jocks were interviewing the winning couple about their costumes, because they were impressive, when they asked them if they made them, the girl replied "my Mom helped me make mine". The girl doing the interview couldn't continue, she was beside herself with laughter and handed the mic to another jock.

Sad ending to this story, lukey, it was not long after that event, and the two were not connected, that a good rock station went country. And the Pontchartrain eventually closed.
