Browns fans would probably make the argument for Braylon Edwards.

Perhaps, but was it Tex Schramm who once said that "WR are a dime a dozen"? I remember someone prominent in the Cowboys organization used to say that a couple decades ago.

Now, I'm NOT trying to belittle Edwards, he's developing into an excellent WR.

But CONSISTENT double digit sack guys? You can spend a decade trying to get just ONE of those guys.

These are the players selected BEFORE the Cowboys took DeMarcus Ware at #11. While a couple of them have not been bad at all, there are none I would rather have over him. It honestly is not even close.

1. Alex D. Smith, 49ers, QB, Utah
2. Ronnie Brown, Dolphins, RB, Auburn
3. Braylon Edwards, Browns, WR, Michigan
4. Cedric Benson, Bears, RB, Texas
5. Carnell Williams, Buccaneers, RB, Auburn
6. Adam Jones, Titans, DB, West Virginia
7. Troy Williamson, Vikings, WR, South Carolina
8. Antrel Rolle, Cardinals, DB, Miami (FL)
9. Carlos Rogers, Commanders, DB, Auburn
10. Mike Williams, Lions, WR, USC

Good post with some substance. This list is very true. I've been busy and have missed parts I & II.

DeMarcus is an easy top 5 defensive player in the entire NFL. And us Dallas Cowboy fans should be lucky to have him. Parcells is an arrogant a**, but he does have a knack for picking certain defensive guys.

A good CB vs. an All Pro and Pro Bowl OLB.

You tell me Joe, how are the scales tipping?

:splat: That was Joe's post regarding this thread. Ouch.

Agree.

Other than a franchise quarterback, a great sacker/disrupter is the biggest prize.

Teams draft bust after bust trying to find a guy like Ware.

Very true... Lot of busts in that draft.

It's probably lucky that happened to be the year we moved to the 34.

Thank god Ware went to a small school.

Thank goodness Auburn University didn't know how to evaluate talent, at least in Ware's case. That's where Ware wanted to go. But the school didn't offer him a scholarship. Had it done so, Ware likely would have been a top 5 pick.

Fortunately for the Cowboys, that's not the way it went.

Tony Dorsett is the reason I'm a Cowboys fan.

But with all due respect, Ricky Bell was a very good running back. He just happened to go to the Tampa Bay Yuccaneers, who didn't exactly have the talent that Dallas did. I suspect Ricky Bell would have done well with the Cowboys.

Of course, he developed a rare disease (I think it was a rare disease) and died so healthy/death prevented him from being all he could have been on the football field.

Oh, and I would add Part IV the drafting of Emmitt Smith. Had we not taken Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft, the Cowboys would likely have traded down to get a linebacker (Jimmy Johnson really wanted James Francis from Baylor) or Blair Thomas. Even Jimmy Johnson said IIRC that he had Thomas ranked as the best running back in the draft.

if we had the 11 and 12 picks do you think we would have gone after Ware and Merriman? If so that would have been a completely sick tandem and Ellis probably wouldnt be in Big D anymore.

I didn't diss Ricky Bell.

This is what I said.

...we probably would have taken Ricky Bell and no disrespect to him, but he was no Tony Dorsett by any wild stretch of the imagination.

I had intended to do five of these. One being Randy White and one being Emmitt Smith. You and cowboyjoe have brought those up and I agree with both as evidence that fate smiled on us.

Perhaps I will look for another one for part IV if I do one. I believe I have 2 more besides Emmitt and Manster.

I love these historical perspectives, Hos. Thanks for starting the discussions.

As for Ware at 11, this again reinforces my position that you really don't know if it's best to have a top 5 draft pick. When everyone was wringing their hands about Buffalo and Cleveland winning too much, (the years we had their first round pick), I thought everyone should just relax and let it shake out because there are numerous examples of guys getting selected in the mid first round that turn out to be better than the guys slotted in the top 10 of all the pre-draft projections. Marvin Harrison and Ed Reed are two examples. Ware is a perfect example. He came out of nowhere and saw his stock rocket to a mid first round grade. I wonder whether we would have taken him if we were picking that year in the top 5?

Thanks Hos I love reading this stuff. While Edwards is good there is no way I would take him over Ware. I can't wait to read more.

In the near future, there will probably have to be a Part VI for Romo. Fate smiled on us twice with him.

Ware might be the best defensive player in the league, I'm sure there could be a pretty good argument for him at least. Edwards is a good player, and one that I really liked that year, however there are probably not many who'd say he was the best offensive player in the league.

Rodgers (Rogers?) is decent and I think he could still turn the corner and be a fine player, the same about Alex Smith, he had a solid year with Norv as OC so there has to be some talent there, maybe the right coach could bring it out. The jury is still out on Pacman, if he plays like he did the year before he was suspended, he'll be a fine player in this league too.

With that said.... none of them compare to what we got in Ware, there is no doubt in my mind that he ended up as the best player out of that draft. Best thing BP ever did here was saying he was turning Ware into a complete LBer (sorry I don't remember the quote off the top of my head.)
