I'm a fan as well.

I'd still feel more comfortable if we had managed to grab Branch or Soliai.

It was hard watching Meriweather go to New England. Even harder to watch DeOssie go to the Giants...but other than that, its been a good weekend thus far.

I agree. I like the fact we addressed the pass rusher and the OL. I would feel a lot better if we had addressed the NT as well. I felt like we should take advantage of the depth at CB especially as well as WR. I feel better now that we picked up a CB which is a 7th RDer but I think this pick will surprise a lot of people.

The QB and the FB were disappointing to me. I suppose because I had never heard of either. After learning more about them I am not quite as disappointed but I still feel we could have done better with some of our picks especially after getting off to such a good start.

When I think of the draft in Jerry's hands I break out in a sweat. I realize it has always been in his control but with Jimmy and Parcells he listened to them more than he seemed to be listening to the other HCs.

I disagree, there two potential Franchise Qbs in draft next year, Brian Brohm for sure and I forget the Hawii kid, who might be another one. I think both are probably better prospects at QB then Russel or Quinn, IMO.

But then you never know how they might do next year or how well they might do, making them out of reach for browns if they do even average next season. So Browns made their choice right now, and cowboys made a good choice for future.

Really Cowboys really didn't have a glaring need this year, other than for future possible starters in mind in their selections. So it was Win/Win for both for now, till we know how the pick will turn out for Cowboys and how Quinn turns out of Browns.

I just don't think that highly of Quinn or Jamarcus Russel, both are big Question marks in my mind. They could end up being great, but I don't believe they are sure thing, say like I thought Vince Young was ( well I thought Vince shouldn't even be starting for 2 years, but thats another matter). But I guess thats just individual opinions, like we know, everyone has them, and most of them stink :D

Your opinion is just as good as mine....Brohm will be a first rounder...the kid from Hawaii, I seriously doubt it, and I don't see either carrying as high a grade as Russell did this year. However, the bottom line is that Cleveland got the QB they wanted for next year's first rounder...they get him a year early to develop, and there's certainly no guarantee one of the franchise QBs in next year's draft would be available to Cleveland for their pick.

Great write up Wayne. I wish everyone would read this.

Hey bdc how is it going?

Got to say I was wondering some about this draft as it was going on for a while, but looking back at some of the guys we got that have that dreaded word "potential", it seems like this year they may have a better shot at making a big contribution on out Cowboys.

If Stanback really runs 4.3 or 4.4 and the CB from Cal Polly is a 4.32 CB they may end up being real weapons of "O" and "D" and that combined with Spencer would be great IMHO! Then the OL guys we picked look to have some real chance of becoming starters at some point. With Stanback as one of the kind of guys that either will be a flop of become pretty dynamic I kind of like that gamble with a guy that has so much gifted athletic ability and one of these days one of them is going to pay off and I just hope it's this one.

I know nothing about the FB pick???

If all this is true it would be a great draft!

You still don't understand the significance of the Spencer pick. What else are we to believe about your like or dislike of the rest of the draft???

I understand the Spencer pick.

I don't understand the Kicker and the FB, or waiting until the 7th round to pick a Corner.

As long as you moan about passing on Quinn at #22, I doubt it.

What's up Wayne! Long time!

I agree that it isn't accurate to think Dallas ripped off Cleveland. We allowed Cleveland to turn their 1st and second this year and first next year into two guys they considered at #3 overall. I think Quinn was considered a top 5-15 pick by most teams, but most teams just didn't need a QB. To get a consensus top 5-15 player for a future first and a second is a good deal.

Also, to get a "Franchise QB" who wants to play in your city should not be underrated. That's a rare match of good play and marketing opportunity. It sells tickets, merchandise, and excites the fans.

Like RCF, I am equally unjazzed by the big 2 QBs. IMO, Quinn's toughness and leadership is overrated. I think he is very similar to Tim Couch --- very well coached in college, good technician. I think Quinn will probably make it because he has had the importance of avoiding turnovers ---especially in the red zone --- drilled into his head. Add in the best left tackle in the draft to protect him, lesser expectations going #22, and the team wanting him to succeed over charlie Fry and I think he has a very good chance to succeed. Anywhere else, I'd see a bust on the horizon.

Great Post Wayne.

This was a meat and potato draft.......and acquiring the Browns 1st next year was the gravy

We took a big step toward beefing up the OL which has been needed to ne done for several years.

When we pick that franchise player next year.....all will be forgiven. ;)

ONly a biased fan would think we hosed them...the deal works great for both teams, which is how deals are supposed to work.

Consider this....It doesn't matter that we moved back into the first round and got the guy we'd targetted, and saying we gave up the other picks for a first next year is ridiculous...that's how we look at it, but the fact for Cleveland is that they got a franchise QB with a first round grade from every publication.

Cleveland needed a QB....they used their pick on a franchise LT. They used their next year's pick, when there aren't many top QB's in the draft, for a franchise QB this year.

They used a first on an OT and a first on a QB....that's a good deal for them. But you're right...some folks won't see it that way. Obviously Cleveland was happy with it, which explains why they came back to us for more....hahaha.
Good points.

I think our first two picks were great, wayne. I enjoyed your write-up. Anytime you can take an offensive lineman from BC, you do it.

Beautifully put.

Short, concise, accurate assessment and you get extra points for the food reference.

I think the most important thing that this draft shows is that, as opposed to past years, we were in the drivers seat because of the team we already had going into the draft. Being here in Charotte, they would have loved to have been able to take the Cleveland deal for next years # 1, but were unable to do that because of all the needs they had THIS year! We, on the other hand, are in a position that we feel we have the ability to think long term, and I am thrilled to get a top 7, no doubt in my mind and maybe top 3 pick next year. Gone are the days where we are chasing players like the Galloway trade, and we can think about our long term stability of our team. How about going into a new stadium with McFadden, or whoever else we want to pick next year. I am very happy with where we are, and our future!

Round 1.

Clearly the Cowboys were never considering a CB or WR. From all we've read and heard, Anthony Spencer was the guy all along, and they were ready to draft him at #22 until the final 1.5 minute mark when the Cleveland deal was made.

It's not flashy, but I love this draft...having two #1's next year is a happy bonus that will give us a reason to follow the Browns...

Good post Wayne.

CB is the salt of the earth. For those potatoes.

Long time no see. The board has missed your unique brand of humor. Welcome back Chief.

Aside from the extra first, Stanback is the wildcard of the draft. If he reaches his potential this can be a very good draft. If he flops it could be pedestrian.

so Spencer could be a double digit sack guy...Free and Marten starting OT's...Anderson starting FB, a new kicker and Courtney Brown becomes a good nickel CB (or more) , but if Stanback (a 4th rd pick) doesnt work out this was a pedestrian weekend?

sorry, that is just silly

Even if half what I just said happens, thats a great draft

Don't forget that 1st round pick from Cleveland next year. Could be a top 5 pick.
