Why did the franchise suck the previous 20 odd years before the current QB and HC were here?

Almost like OP is choosing said scapegoat because that scapegoat is 100% responsible for the state of the franchise
There is your problem. You are talking about an organization and everything that has gone on for "20 odd years" and instead of thinking that would increase the level of complexity you try to make it even more simple.

It really is not about finding out the cause of the issue but rather finding someone to blame for it. It's utterly futile too given the reality of property rights.

Hire this coach! Draft this player! Sign this free agent!

It doesn't matter.

Every player and coach who have passed through this organization for the last 28 years, most of whom you now hate because they failed to achieve the ultimate goal, were hired/signed by the general manager (Jerry) and director of player personnel (Stephen).

And guess what, they will hire/sign the next ones, too. Why? Because they gave themselves jobs-for-life.

Blame Dak like you blamed Romo, then blame the next QB. Blame Garrett and McCarthy, whatever you need to do. They're all symptoms of the disease.

As long as the cancer calls the shots, it doesn't matter.

Be glad for a 12 win season and an occasional wild card win, because that's as good as it gets. They have shown us their ceiling. How many decades does it take?
Romo did it to himself by buying in to Garrett's pass happy offense. He had the talent to win, but he sold out to be "in" with Jerry and Jason.
Jason was so desperate to prove he wasn't a disaster that he missed out on the talent he actually had. He quickly ditched Romo when he thought Dak was going to justify him, and now we're stuck with Dak.
The problems started with Jason, and will continue as long as Jason Garrett 2.0 is the quarterback. Parcells built a winning team and Garrett drove it into the ground.
Now before Parcells, Jerry did destroy the team Jimmy Johnson built and ran it into the ground.
But here in 2024, there is one problem that remains, and that problem has destroyed the team for the last eight seasons. Until he's gone, we're still in the Garrett era.

When two constants for "20 odd years" have been making all of the personnel decisions it's not "finding someone to blame for it". They are the only logical conclusion.

Complexity is when one tries to rationalize the only logical conclusion in order to provide a sense of hope for themselves. Otherwise, it's a hopeless situation for them.

This doesn't make much sense. If it was all about money and the brand then winning again will only help that. How much more merch would the Jones' sell if the Cowboys went back to Super Bowls and won some?

Jerry is actually a terrible businessman. He could be making more money but because of his tiny ego, he refuses to make the team better by stepping aside and letting good Football people run things.
If you think Jerry is terrible business man, you don’t understand business. Bad GM, owner, ect but he is the best business owner in the history of the NFL. He is the man who led the television deals and destroyed the union when the owners locked out players in 2012. Jerry is a Hall of Famer because of how he handles business.

Yet his product has sucked for over 25 years

Would he not make a lot more money if the Cowboys were legit? But his narcissism couldn't take not having all the credit. Doesn't sound like a great business owner to me.

If there was only one thing to blame sure. You have done nothing remotely resembling a deduction. It is just cheap logic typical to scapegoating.

That is an interesting take on hope. Jerry has his plusses and minuses and that team can win with him as owner even if the net is negative. I look in terms of probable outcomes as opposed to hope but you do you.

Or an alternative view point

Some fans have a more optimistic approach to live itself. Which shows up on these messages boards in the form of continuous optimism that we do have a shot every year, particularly the last 3 years.

I know the game isn't over, but you have the 7 seed leading the 1 seed right now. Once playoffs arrive anything can happen.
