I think it will be dumb to draft a O-lineman at 9

Both SB teams drafted an OL in round 1 last year.

Oh geeze really?

We are getting desperate around here. Did everyone who drafted a WR go 6-10 and everyone who drafted a RB 7-9?

A lot of folks are hanging their hats on the fact Dallas/Jerry hasn't taken a first-round OL in recent memory.

Prior to last year, when was the last time Dallas had taken a WR in the first round?

Prior to Felix Jones, when was the last time Dallas had a taken a RB?

I think this year more then any Jerry will be willing to flip the switch in the first round on a offensive lineman. With that said, I HIGHLY dount he will be willing to do it at 9

I am sure you have a point it just isnt relevant to mine.

Bottom line is it clear there is value in drafting OL in round 1 and it is clear Dallas needs OL. As an aside... yes, drafting WRs early is a very bad practice historically.

I'd trade down but the OL group is strong and an area of need so I'd choose a couple this draft.

The Steelers and Packers had 09 seasons they wanted to improve upon and correctly identified key OL starters in round 1. I am fairly certain Dallas would gladly trade pick 9 for either of those 2 guys right now.

Thats all I really wanted to hear. Anyone supporting drafting any of these guys at 9 just because we need a offensive lineman are border line clinical.

I wouldn't draft Carimi, Costonzo, or Solder at 9, but the two best OTs (in my opinion) are Smith and Sherrod. I think they both are at least top 20 picks at this point, and the blue-chip players will most likely be gone by 9.

After the blue-chip players are gone (5 or 6 players/unless teams reach on QBs), drafting Smith or Sherrod at 9 makes a ton of sense. The talent level levels out and starts to blend together. If you have a first round grade on an OT, why wouldn't you consider taking an offensive tackle at 9. You get to make sure you get one and get to pick the player you want. Plus, it is a safe and solid pick and fills a big need. Smith and Sherrod are not just RT, they have LT ability, and this team has one good to adequate OT on the team. If Free goes down, who is going over there? Sam Young? I don't think so.

You can trade down; however, Detroit is right there at 13, and they must protect Stafford.

The Eagles and Colts will get aggressive to get the player that they want at offensive tackle, if they choose to go that route. I bet Sherrod is high on the Eagles board, and he could protect Vick's blind side. They have spoken to him.

There is a long way to go in this process, and I wouldn't be so sure that an OT doesn't creep into the top 10 or 15 picks. The run will start around 13-17 if Dallas doesn't take the guy they have rated highest.

If you don't take an OT at 9, you run a real risk of getting shut out. Those top 5 guys will be long gone by pick 40. If you trade down, Detroit could take one of your guys. Then, another team could jump you after you settle into your new spot. The Eagles, Giants, and Colts may take OTs. The Eagles and Colts would move up into the top 20 to secure them. The Colts and Eagles have made trade ups to get players they really want, and the Colts traded back into round one to get an OT. The Eagles jumped Dallas for Shawn Andrews.

Sherrod is ready to plug and play, and Bunting rated him .5 behind Jordan and Smith. I wouldn't count him out at 9, imo. His name is going to be in the mix, I predict. Dallas may not take him, but I predict that you hear his name in the mix at 9. He will be coming to Valley Ranch, I predict.

If Smith weighs 300 or 305 or more at the combine, he is going in the top 20 for sure.

What is the big difference of players from pick 8-20?

I don't see this big gap.

Watching this Cowboys offensive line protect Tony Romo and their mediocre to poor to terrible run blocking and watching Marc Colombo play RT (when he should have been cut after 2009) makes people want solutions.

Players like Smith and Sherrod are what Dallas needs up front on offense. They provide youth, athleticism, strength, better run blocking, upside, and desire. They both have LT ability. You get a starter and another option at LT if Free goes down.

The first thing that college programs do when they are rebuilding is to go recruit offensive linemen. If you can run the ball, pass protect, move the ball, and score, you keep your defense off the field and give them points to play with.

Its a total disgrace that the Boys have not taken a OL higher than 3rd since 2004. No other team in the NFL has paid less attention in the higher rounds of the draft to the OL then the boys have. And then some wonder why we can never punch it in from the One or protect our QB like he should be?

Robert Quinn at 9. Just make it happen.

Tyron Smith or Carimi in the 2nd. One will be there. I guarantee it.

Don't say that. It makes people sound stupid when they guarantee something they have ZERO control over.

If someone better doesn't fall, I trade back and take an offensive lineman.

Preferably Gabe Carimi or Tyron Smith. I think Carimi is someone that could start at RT now and be a pretty good one in a year or so. I think Tyron Smith can be a franchise LT in two years allowing us to move Free to RT. I'm on the fence about Sherrod. He has the physical attributes, but I don't think he has attitude. He doesn't attack. I want an aggressive player in the trenches.

Like Solder, I don't want Castonzo either. We aren't and I don't want us to be a zone blocking running team. Road graders please.
