I think there's a really good chance that Jaylon Smith will play this year

In theory yes, it's not Jerry's fault what other people report. In theory, an uncapped year means you can sign players to big money deals without it counting against the cap. But Mara has Goodell under some mind control, or pictures of him, and he got Dallas and Washington in trouble for paying players during the uncapped year. So Mara led the charge for Dallas and Washington, two division rivals, to be punished by taking salary cap money away from us for two years and Goodell agreed and signed off on it.

So I can see were Mara would have his feelings hurt if Dallas got the steal of the draft and Dallas' doctors performed the surgery and the expectation for him to play would be for 2017. Mara would pull the puppet strings again with Goodell and probably get us draft picks taken away.

I could see them trying that honestly. Reading the article I just read , the Dr's comments and so forth.....

If he plays early this year there are going to be some questions raised.

I'm not trying to be condescending or prohibit posters from giving their opinions, so please accept my caveat.

But ... it would be good to know which poster has a medical background - whether a doctor or a medical student, etc. - and which are just speculating from a lack of medical knowledge - especially in a thread such as this one.

I read these opinions, and I would like to believe them because the explanations sound good. But I'm like, "Are you a doctor? Is your opinion based on medical knowledge and experience?"

I say this because we all hope Jaylon Smith recovers, and posts like these - reading comments from posters who give optimistic reports and evaluations - can spread false hope.

My two cents.

Doc 50 is a medical doctor but I haven't seen him post on this as of yet.

Well, speculation runs rampant, as we might expect.

There is some fundamental misunderstanding expressed here, though. For one, the peroneal nerve has not died or been torn; there is just microscopic internal damage, probably at a severity of Sunderland's second degree, wherein there may be slight damage to the endoneurium but the epineurium and perineurium are intact, and the deficit can expect to resolve at a rate of 1-2 mm daily. This will be a process (not Garrett's words), not a sudden awakening or overnight resolution. Lastly, the nerve fibers are intact in their distal distribution; there is no need for regrowth and reconnection, such that we might wonder if the nerves go where they're supposed to; that's a complete misrepresentation.

Recovery from ACL repair usually takes 8-9 mos, so Smith may be on pace to be ready by September. Add another 8 wks of getting into football shape, and he just might be an appropriate PUP candidate.

Just have to be patient.

One thing to note, in that clip, it appears that Smith is still wearing that brace to help with his drop foot. So while the video itself is impressive that he's doing what he's doing at 3.5 months............. the drop foot/nerve issue is still very very much the issue at this time.

I'm not sure why some think a guy....as it stands today....who cannot raise his foot...is going to be a difference maker between us having a good season...as opposed to a great season. If a guy with one foot...is better than the guys we have now with 2 feet...then ALL of the guys we have now should be fired. If his ceiling...is what everyone says it is....let him get to 100% and then let him play.

If we needed our 2nd round pick to be a difference maker THIS year...we should have drafted somebody else. I admit I don't watch a lot of college football...but if this guy has the potential to be (Patrick Willis, Navarro Bowman etc...) then let's give him a chance to become that guy.

Hi Doc

I described the injury to 2 researchers who worked on peripheral nerve regeneration (PhDs not MD). They said the nerve cell distal of the injury is dead, and the nerve needs to regenerate the published 6 inches to reach the target muscles at a rate of ~1mm daily. When you said resolve, are you saying the same thing?
They also said the regeneration needs to reconnect and the old fiber serves as a guide but not always a perfect guide. Sounds like this is totally contrary to your understanding?

Thanks

I think there's a really good chance that Jaylon Smith will play, in fact, if the Cowboys are thinking ahead here, Jaylon will sleep in a hyperbaric chamber every night from now until his nerve completely regenerates. That makes his recovery happen ASAP.

That's why I think he will play this year.... thoughts???

We'll see. If they start him out on PUP we'll know that they at least believe he has a chance.

a question for the PUP experts. How long can you keep a guy on PUP without converting him to IR

A player who finishes the preseason still on the PUP list can then be placed on the regular-season PUP list. Such players must sit out the first six weeks of the regular season. At that point, teams have a five-week window in which to allow the player to begin practicing; from the day the player begins practicing, teams have an additional 21-day window in which to decide whether to activate the player to the 53-man roster. If either of those deadlines pass, the player must remain on the PUP list for the remainder of the season.

Marc Colombo had a similar injury when he was with the Bears, although I don't know if it was worse, and also a different nerve was damaged. He missed most of 2 years.
In 2002, as a rookie, Colombo was placed on injured reserve after suffering a dislocated patella and femoral nerve damage during a road game against the St. Louis Rams on November 18. He missed the entire 2003 season after being placed first on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on August 13, and then on injured reserve. He also missed most of the 2004 season

Absolute best case scenario is just after Halloween.

Hopefully we won't need to find out.
