the numbers are not stacking up so well. Did quick comparison between Derek Sherrod, Tyson Smith, Trent Williams (best rookie OT last year) and our own Sam Young to get an idea if the numbers tell us anything. The one stat that i actually think is vital in evaluating OT is Vertical Jump as it appears to translate to athleticism. Sam Young put up slightly better numbers than Sherrod...which was suprising. Trent Williams numbers are amazing and further solidified my feeling that there is too much of a gap between last years talent to this years talent at OT and Dallas really should trade back if there intent on drafting OT in first round. Threw in Derek Sherrod video for those who didn't see him play yet.

Derek Sherrod 6'5 321 lbs
Vertical Jump - 28 inches
Broad Jump - 8'1"
3 cone drill - 7.43
40 yard dash - 5.18

Tyson Smith 6'5" 307 lbs
Vertical Jump 29
Broad Jump - 9'1"
3 cone drill - 7.47
40 yard dash - 4.93

Trent Williams 6'5" 315 lbs
Vertical Jump 34 1/2
Broad Jump - 9'5"
3 cone drill - 7.45
40 yard dash - 4.81

Sam Young 6'8" 316 lbs
Vertical Jump 29 1/2
Broad Jump - 8'8"
3 cone drill - 7.43
40 yard dash - 5.20

The 3 biggest #'s to look at in an OT in my opinion would be 3 cone drill(agile feet are important), Bench Reps, and arm length. I really dont care about my OT's straight line speed or ability to jump.

Tyron Smith
3 cone- 7.47
bench- 31
arm length- 36 3/8

Derrick Sherrod
3 cone- 7.43
bench- 23
arm length- 35 3/8

Trent Williams
3 cone- 7.45
bench- 23
arm length- 34 1/4

Im not in anyway condoning taking Sherrod over Smith or anywhere near #9, but youre logic is very flawed with the #'s you used. And I would also take technique over anything in an offensive line man as long as his size and strength is adequate.

You should probably throw some tackles that are already established into the mix as well.

None of the guys you've listed really have much of a resume, Williams is the only one with significant game time.

For my part, I think using numbers to compare linemen is a doomed expedition. The numbers are worth noting, but being able to jump out of the gym doesn't prepare you to face the Ware's of the game.

Arm length, hand quickness dictate OLT success

Many traits are required for an offensive tackle to successfully be able to handle edge speed - quick hands and feet, balance and natural knee bend. The one physical trait that is most often taken for granted, however, is arm length.

Without good arm length, generally considered at least 33½ inches on the left side and preferably 34 inches, it is difficult for blockers to be able to handle inside counters and recover quickly to keep a pocket clean.

PFW calculated the average arm length of every starting left tackle in the NFL last season, and it was 34½ inches. The average arm length of the Pro Bowl tackles in the NFC, all of whom were left tackles, was 33¾ inches, while the average of AFC Pro Bowlers, also all left tackles, was 34 inches.

Trying to determine offensive tackle talent via analyizing numbers, particularily vertical jump, is silly.

Here's Jake Long's combine numbers:

5.17 forty
37 BP
27" vertical jump
8.06 broad jump
7.44 3-cone

Talent and technique are still the primary factors.

BP and three cone are more important I think for an O lineman.

...and physical traits. Sherrod has 35 3/8 inch arm length which is very good. Tyron's are even bigger at 36.4 inches.

What impresses me is Smith putting up 31 reps with such long arms.

Costanzo should be your man then, he's got the 3rd quickest 3-Cone (7.25) among tackles in the last decade to go with 28 reps.

Tyron Smith's 3-cone at his pro day would be good for a 4 way tie at 16th (7.43) in the last decade.

Amusingly enough, Doug Free has the 8th quickest in the last decade at 7.38

This is true. It is harder to do more reps with larger wings. I think Smith is our guy.
