Story of the offseason right there.

Oh, and I found some good stuff on the Rams' biggest fan forum.

This argument could go on and on forever. It ultimately depends what you want in a free safety ...

What does your free safety have to do?

He has to contain broken plays and make plays on the ball ...

The 35 yard gain by Barber? Seriously, very few defensive players are going to bring down any running back/wide receiver going head to head like that. Advantage to the ball carrier 100% of the time ...

O.J. has forced 21 turnovers in 38 games ......

I don't think O.J.'s problem is an inability to tackle. Maybe sometimes he too aggressively tries to knock the ball loose instead of wrapping up. I don't know if that is really something you should really fix ...

A REAL strong safety, somebody to replace Chavous, might make O.J.'s supposed lack of tackling ability less of a concern ...

I don't know where he fits in terms of the other safeties in the league. But I have a hard time believing if you plugged Dawkins, Jones, Wilson, Rhodes, etc. into our defense that it would be much, if any, better ....

Seems like Rams fans are pointing out all kinds of problems with his game too -> Fan Analysis

Look at how much interest Rolle is garnering already, and he isn't as near as good as Atogwe. If we have concerns of re-signing him, I really don't understand why we wouldn't tender him at a 2nd round. Surely a team would offer a 2nd for him.

before he got his tender....

I think it was obvious that Atogwe would be getting the high tender, and i doubt a team would give up a first and third for him. Hopefully he produces well this year and the team gets him signed to a long term deal.

I really hope we manage to keep them both.

Atogwe is a playmaker...ball hawker if you will.

and apparently he was franchised last year so if they gave him any tender with picks they would owe him around 7 mil again this season - only reason he got no compensation tender it seems. but they were willing to pay him that last year so he gotta have something goin for him.

From chicago tribune - Since Atogwe came into the league as a third-round pick out of Stanford in 2005, he has had a hand in 41 takeaways — an average of 10.25 per season. No player in the NFL has had more as the Ravens' Ed Reed is second over that period with 39. Atogwe has piled up his numbers playing with a team that has been inept — rarely playing with a lead and never benefiting from a consistent pass rush or solid run defense.

If anyone signs Atogwe, it will no doubt be for less than the $6+ million a year he got last year. So, the Rams can match and end up paying less.

Otherwise, Atogwe goes off as an UFA in June...because he's not signing a $.1.2 million deal. We end up with nothing but another whole to fill. Frankly, I don't think we are in position to create another hole and have to use a draft pick on a safety.

Maybe this is last minute hardball tactics to get him to sign a long-term deal. Maybe the Rams liked their safety play enough without Atogwe to roll the dice. It's a huge gamble if they don't sign him.

Well...I guess if they take the low ball offer route we can trade down and get Eric Berry to fill the void.

All these plans that have us getting getting young value in the RFA market beyond what we could get in the draft presuppose us finding trading partners who are willing to take less for their RFAs than they'll be able to replace in the draft. Forgive me if I don't stand up and clap each time it's suggested.

How 'bout we just look for value in the UFA market and then play our hand in the draft and not mess up the very good team we've already got in place?

We're not going to mess anything up by dumping Hamlin and Flo's contract and picking up Gaither / and - or Atogwe.

Getting Gaither is a great thing.

So is Atogwe

Two of the most average parts of our team comes from the play of our LT and our FS, replacing them with better players who will play for around the same money is improving, plus both of them are younger than their conterparts.

I want those two positions upgraded for sure. I'm more inclined to draft the guys for those positions though but that's just me. I like trying to build through the draft personally but I wouldn't throw a fit about upgrading in this way either.

9 times out of 10 I would too.

I could pass on Atogwe but I couldn't pass on Gaither.

His age mixed with his abilities he has already displayed make this one a must have imo.

I imagine we will start hearing more about this as the week goes on.

This year, I kind of agree with Michael Lombardi--who says the real winners in free agency so far have been the teams that have waited and not rushed out and overspent in this unusual environment.

I think Chicago may be be digging a very long-term, deep hole for themselves. But then again, maybe they get some reward in the short term and come out of this ok.
