I would trade Zack Martin for a 1st and 2nd

This thread is pointless. When has Dallas ever traded a player in his prime? I can't think of a single instance other than Walker which is forever ago. When was the last time Dallas even traded a starter?

not me.
I sign Zack.....not trade him.
Zeke agrees with me,btw.

I s Zeke going to take less money in his next contract? Look at what Leveon Bell is asking for in Pittsburgh. Zeke might not be around if we make Zach the highest paid G in league history.

In that regard , most threads are pointless. One of the big reasons Dallas has not succeeded in the cap era is that we don't know when to say goodbye to players. We've seen Philly and Denver wheel and deal themselves into super bowl champs recently and that sometimes means letting good players walk or trading them.

This is a real issue b/c if we can't afford to sign Zach to that huge contract, we are going to have to pay him like a Left tackle in 2019 or let him walk. There is no way the cowboy brass isn't having this discussion.

I have no desire for Martin to be traded.

A great front office knows when a very good player is going to start a major decline and trades before that downward curve happens. The team where the player is actually playing is supposed to know what they have and what the player has left before it becomes public knowledge making trades very possible, Jerry doesn't have that ability for whatever reason, so this is done.

Zeke won't be around if we trade our best interior OL...he'll be on I.R.

Depends on how well his replacement plays. Zeke was grinding out 4.0 per carry last year with the best G in football blocking for him.

G is not a position of primary importance. You can win, and many teams do, with a lot less in that spot.

Average annual value isn’t what they get paid, though. You can sign someone to a 5/50million contract with 20 million guaranteed structured with a 1st year $5 million dollar roster bonus and 1 million base salary with 7 million dollar base salaries in year 2-4 and $30 million in year 5. Cut him after Year 3 and his AAV is still 10 million but was only paid 20 million over 3 years with cap hits of 6m, 7m, and 7m, well below his contract average.

It’s admittedly an extreme example just to prove a point, but it still shows that using AAV as a baseline is flawed. Because the cap can be so easily manipulated, it makes AAV useless in these comparisons.

Well done. My point is there can only be so many resources allocated to a unit. We need to be careful with the cap and each unit ie, OL,LB etc.

Depends on how they're used. We pull a fair amt. There are reasons he's All Pro. I do agree in not allocating too many resources for one unit esp a G. They're not hard to pick up in the draft and don't have to be Pro Bowl quality to be effective.

we tried that....last year....remember.

Hear me out....

Zack is one of my fave Cowboys but....he's playing hardball and will want a ridiculous contract.

We cant have all our cap dollars tied up in linemen, I wouldn' sign him anyway for the contract he wants so why not throw some trade bait out there

1st and 2nd or two 1sts...whatever
It is what it is, give me a few high round picks and I can’t say I’m out

That is pretty much my point. You stated it better.

But, what I think the team should do is rarely what the team actually does do. It appears that Stephen has every intention of paying Zach and he'll worry about all the other guys that will be needing new contracts when he has to. This team never lets go of its star players in their prime.

Zack Martin is this generation's Mike Munchak, Russ Grimm, and Randall McDaniel.

Trade the man?
No, you pay the man.

Not for 70 million dollars, no I wouldn't
I completely agree. If this team wants to be successful. Successful, meaning win a Super Bowl. Our FO needs to be smarter and not so emotional. Unlike most successful organizations, we keep our star players to long because our GM, Jerry, gets to emotionally attached to them. Also, Martin is an outstanding guard, but he is a GUARD!! To many positions can affect the outcome of a game so much more than a guard. How much does NE pay their guards?

I like Martin as well. I am with you there. At this point though if we were thinking of getting rid of OL dollars, you have to consider Tyron first because his injury situation is not going to get better.
We have kicked the can too far down the road with Tyron at this point. We are fully invested in an injury prone, declining skills LT due to contract restructures. I fully expect him to get injured again next season. Our recent moves makes me feel better about his back up but also makes me worry about a dead money situation in 2019 when he breaks down for good.
