I would trade Zack Martin for a 1st and 2nd

I suggested a Martin for Thomas, a fourth this year and a second next and was called 10 kinds of crazy.

Yes, it would be a loss. Yes, Martin is a stud. Yes, we would essentially have two guard spots we'd have to fill. But our cap positional spend would be back in whack.

We move Collins inside, Fleming at RT. Maybe new Martin at the other guard. Draft a guard and maybe pick up another guard during cut downs.
I like this a lot. I do think we devalue the RT position. I would rather not move Collins. Keep him as is for stability and draft 2 Guards along with our free agency pick up to complete the line, I expect Tyron to continue digressing. That back and his 325 frame can only last so long. Unfortunately, we have 3 or 4 years invested in a LT that probably only has one year left. Looks like we will have another dead cap consumer just like Romo eventually.

Hear me out....

Zack is one of my fave Cowboys but....he's playing hardball and will want a ridiculous contract.

We cant have all our cap dollars tied up in linemen, I wouldn' sign him anyway for the contract he wants so why not throw some trade bait out there

1st and 2nd or two 1sts...whatever

So you want to get rid of a proven All Pro for a gamble in the draft? LOL. Great plan.
Dont hate the plan. Hate the fact that we put too much money into Tyron with all these restructures over the years coupled with declining play. If you spend a zillion dollars on your line you will have BIG holes in your line up in other places. If you spend about 50 million on the line how do you pay Dak and Zeke? "Dak friendly" includes having Dak and Zeke for years to come. I love Martin but we just cant afford him and still pay the rest of our team. Remember, Stephen Jones likes to sign his own players instead of making a splash. A 50 million dollar line will prevent that.

If Tyron wasn't hurting I would do this deal but something tells me he's going to retire early due to his back.
I agree. But we will be on the hook for all that signing bonus that we committed to when we restructured his deal twice.

I will say this. Once Zach signs his contract he will essentially be untradeable. Personally, I don't think Dallas has something special going so I would be open to trading anyone for 1st & 2nd.

I don't think Martin is being unreasonable, its more about the market than Martin having an ego.
Martin's a good guy, but looking at the broad picture, that "market" is driven by multiple egos, and they keep growing, and growing,.....

His hometown team is Indianapolis, picking 6 and 36, 37, and 49. Just sayin'.

Also Chicago is pretty close to Indianapolis. Picking 8 and 39.

Would I swap Martin for a top 40 of...

1a mlb-Tremaine Edmunds (or s-Minkah Fitzpatrick or s-Derwin James)
1b g-Isaiah Wynn (or g-Will Hernandez or dt-Taven Bryan)
2a s-Justin Reid (or wr-DJ Moore or g-Billy Price)

Yes. Yes I would.

I think it would more realistically be just the 1 or maybe a swap of RD1 and a RD2 and RD3. We were 9-7 last year. All these players asking for big contracts...they got us 9-7. Martin was here. Lawrence was here. Irving was occasionally here. You got us 9-7. A lot of that is on coaches and QB, but still. They aren't irreplaceable to me. You know who didn't have Martin? The two Super Bowl teams from the past five years.

Problem is, you'll be paying similarly when Collins hits the market and he's a lesser player. The market costs what the market costs.

Also, let's say after this year it's clear Dak is not the guy. Zack might be a commodity that gets you up near a QB in next year's draft. So you might want to hold on to him this year and revisit in 2019.

As others have said though, Dallas doesn't trade players. Only teams with actual GMs do this.

Sigh....

Some say the reason we didn't make the playoffs was because of poor offensive line play...

Why then, do some want to get rid of a guy that is top 3 at his position?

Zack Martin plays the position that is tasked with dealing with oponents 3 tech or "pass rushing" DT...

If you think Prescott looked like crap dealing with a bad LT, wait till you see what he looks like dealing with pressure up the gut on every down... Every QB says that pressure from inside is worse than pressure from the outside because you can't step up into the pocket..

Some here say that Martin isn't worth 15 mil a year. The same people want to give Prescott over 25 mil a year...give me a break!!!

I would rather have Martin , Tyron , Fred , and a mediocre QB ( a rookie or a journey man) than Prescott and a mediocre O Line...

The Oline and Zeke are the reason we win.. that is where our money should be spent .

I would trade Garrett for a bucket of vomit.
Here ya go he is all yours

That is not a good plan.

Those teams had playmakers too but the problem was they were so cap constricted, they couldn't put a balanced team on the field at times.

If you are paying 25% of your cap to your OL, you are going to struggle to put a quality, rounded team on the field.

That's not to say I trade him just to trade him and save cap space. Someone would have to give up a lot to get him. But I don't think trading him if the return is great is some bizarre move.

The cap implications must be considered on every move. You could draft a guy like Hernandez and let's say you get a top 10 guard play out of him. That's obviously not the same as Martin who is one of the best, if not the best, at his position.

But you can draft the top guard in most drafts somewhere between pick 15 and 25. Nelson may be an outlier this year but that remains to be seen.

Hernandez will go toward the bottom of the first round. If you get a first round pick you can draft a player to play guard, save $14 million per year for the player and keep a healthy cap. There may be some dropoff from one to the other but it may be worth it to save $14 million per year for 5 years.

Kind of depends on where the 1st is.

A top three 1st rounder equals about three late 1st rounders

You can usually get a really good guard at the bottom of the first round. Very seldom do more than one or two guards go in the first round. In fact sometimes the first guard goes off the table very late in the first round.

I would not trade him for anyone you keep your best players You do not wind up with Larry Allen's if you trade them

Not long ago I would have said that trading Martin would be a crazy notion. The best G in the NFL for an unknown??!! His agent will want a lot of toad skins that's for sure. Today I would say it's not a completely crazy notion. Let's draft Hernandez and find out :)
