WHY?
First: I believe that the two biggest factors determining the outcomes of football games are 1) turnovers, and 2) quarterback. And nothing has a greater bearing on those two aspects of the game than offensive line and pass rush. The Dallas OL needs to improve, and I don't think just replacing Rivera is the answer. IMHO, the Dallas OL needs an infusion of talent not just at one or two starting spots but at backup positions as well, not only to replace injured starters but also to push them, to create competition and add fuel to practice. Better talent in practice makes the defense better too.
So, going into camp, the starting OL is: Adams, Kosier, Gurode, Davis and Colombo. Colombo was solid last year, and with a guard like Davis next to him, would really have the chance to excel. Both Gurode and Kosier had good years and should only get better. Flo was average and has to pick it up. I truly believe McQ has game, though, and is the future at LT. Johnson is gone, replaced by Satele who plays both center and guard. In the case that Colombo doesn't pan out, Davis moves to RT and Grubbs or Proctor takes his place. I think any way you look at it, this scenario makes us more talented, deep and flexible along the offensive line.
I know that Thomas would be expensive, but he's a versitile playmaker who disrupts offenses all over the field. With him opposite Ware, it wouldn't matter which side they play. They both get after the passer. They both stuff the run. Reggie Nelson reminds me a bunch of Ed Reed. He's a big hitter who can cover like a CB. Putting him in the Dallas defensive backfield moves Roy closer to the line where he's finally in position to do what he does best. Nelson instantly makes Henrey "better." A lot of the "bad" coverage attributed to Henrey wasn't all his fault. Many, many times, a safety wasn't doing his job. When it comes to the LBs, I don't think our 3-4 defense can ever have enough athletes. I don't see the apparent logjams at some of the positions as a bad thing at all. Ina 3-4, backup linebackers see a ton of PT. The starting lineup: Thomas, Carp, Ayodele and Ware. Thomas and Ware speak for themselves. Ayodele finally got comfortable in his new position toward the end of last year and started making plays. And Carp's a prototypical 3-4 mike LB, IMHO, a big run stuffer with good quickness and cover skills.
Last but not least is Higgins. I really think Austin has all the tools and will eventually be a starter in the league, but Higgins reminds me SO much of Steve Smith. He has good speed, but more than that, he is lethally quick. He's a game breaker, a TD waiting to happen. He's also a tremendous punt returner, and I think the most underrated player entering the draft (so far).
Anyway, that's my rough draft.
